Yes indeed, the long awaited guessing game is just about ready to begin. I say "just about" because I still have two charts to do, but I've totalled up the points of the songs that have already fallen off the chart. If I don't get it done tonight, it should be done by tomorrow. Meanwhile, let's start by going over the number one songs of the past few years, starting with 1990:
1990) This song was by a singer that exploded onto the music scene in 1990 and had tons of hits in the 1990s. This song probably would have been the top song of 1990 had it not come so late in the year, but I was able to give it enough points for it to just barely win.
1991) Virtually all year-end lists for 1991 had Bryan Adams' "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" at number one, but mine defied the rule. This song was by a soul group who's had only one number one song on the CHR charts. The title of the song is sort of appropriate for the occasion
1992) Come on, what else could it be??
1993) This song took the longest to climb to number one on the CHR chart until the PPW era, which started almost exactly a year after it hit #1. Due to several songs that were number one (on R&R) around that period that I didn't like, I was able to give this song multiple weeks at #1, causing it to be by far the top song of the year.
1994) Stop, Yield, One-Way, Dead End...
1995) There's a new thread about this song somewhere on these boards.
I'll get the other years on a little later on...

1992-The only one is "The One" by Elton John. Sir Mix-A-Lot has the song with the longest staying power "Baby Got Back"---why do junior high students always request this song today amazes me.... I guess, we could always blame Texas for this one, especially one city that lost their football team. Close quote

Jimmy, for 1990 and 1994, you got the right artist, wrong song. You got 1995 right, though.
Ryan, though "The One" was in the Top Ten on my year end chart for 1992, it was not number one. What song was on many year end charts in 1992?
And jond7699, your guess of "The First Time" was correct!
I had temporarily forgotten about 1996's number one song, so that's why I stopped at 1995.
Here are a few more:
1996) This song was the first song ever that topped my year end chart without going to number one (that number has since grown to three), but it remains the lowest peaking song to top the year end chart (#5) (The others peaked at number two for multiple weeks). It didn't even hit the Top Ten in R&R.
1997) This song had a lot of staying power, which counts when it comes to my year end charts, which are ranked by reverse points (of course, it also counts on R&R's year end charts, on which this song ranked very high, too).
1998) This huge hit is among the songs with most top ten weeks.
1999) (TBA)
2000) This song didn't hit number one on R&R's weekly charts, but did on mine to keep an extremely annoying song out of the #1 spot.
2001) On R&R's charts, a song that didn't go to number one topped their year end chart. The same thing happened on my chart. But not with the same song. The song that topped my year end chart, I believe, was in R&R's Top Ten, though.
2002) This song was #1 on multiple R&R formats - as far as weekly charts go.

ulij20,
Blame HOUSTON, TX in 1992. I guess you don't want clues on my guesses. I WILL ALWAYS try to show my LOVE for YOU better.

1996. Jann Arden - Insensitive 2000. Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want 2001. Train - Drops of Jupiter 2002. Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles Very good (but you probably remember these from my past Top 100 quizzes, don't you? ) Here are a few easier clues: 1990) This one should be obvious. The guess for this one had the right artist. How many songs did this artist have in 1990 anyway? 1992) Billme was rather close on this one; it WAS from a successful movie, but the wrong one. Moreover, "I Will Always Love You" came way too late in the year to accumulate enough points to register on 1992's year end chart. What was left of its chart run in 1993 counted for that year. 1993) This was a duet by two R&B superstars. 1997) This song was by someone who Rick Dees said sounded like Kermit The Frog. And I almost forgot... 1999) This song is by a Christian group who did a remake of a late 1980s song last year. GOOD LUCK!!

The correct guesses since my last post are:
1990) Love Takes Time by Mariah Carey
1992) End Of The Road by Boyz II Men
1999) Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer
1997's top song was by the right artist, wrong group. "Who Will Save Your Soul" was from 1996 (but that was the song that Rick Dees said Jewel sounded like Kermit the Frog).
You were on the right track for 1993, but it wasn't "A Whole New World". The song in question I don't think is from a movie, but it sounds sort of like a movie theme.
I have the points for 2003's chart totalled up, but I haven't ranked them yet. That I plan to do tonight (I probably would have gotten to it last night, but after work I had a reflexology appointment (and did I ever feel refreshed afterward!). With the two unguessed songs above pretty much in the bag, here are the ten songs that came closest to making the Year end chart, in order of chart appearance:
1) This was song #101. I sort of had to fool around with its chart run to keep it from making the chart in order to let another song in. This was because, for one thing, I don't like this song too much (song #101, that is), and besides, it already ranked high up on 2002's chart whereas the song I let in was a mid-year song. The song in question was by a group featuring a singer who you might say put a smile on your face.
2)This song was about several people who may have been big successes, but their lives were tragically cut short.
3) The title of this song - possibly a hillbilly trying to get the attention of one of his relatives?
4) This song, by (a tangent group?) had the same title as a Beatles song on which George Harrison sang lead.
5) The title of this song is similar to one of Mariah Carey's first ten #1 songs.
6) One of the settings in the movie Poltergeist?
7)This song is hot on the charts right now and just might make it to #1.
8) This song, which just recently fell off the chart, reminds me of "Treat Me Right" by Pat Benatar.
Two other songs that didn't quite make 100 points:
9) I forget the artist of this song, but they may have been inspired by Tony Terry?
10) This is a song that raced up and down the charts pretty quickly, by a very colorful singer.

Kelly Rowland: "Stole" 3. Cam'ron featuring Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey, and Toya: "Hey Ma" 10. Pink, but it could fit "Feel Good Time" or "Trouble."

2. Kelly Rowland: "Stole" 3. Cam'ron featuring Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey, and Toya: "Hey Ma" 10. Pink, but it could fit "Feel Good Time" or "Trouble." The first two are right, and 10 is "Feel Good Time". If it were "Trouble", I'd say featuring a singer that the world may revolve around (as in William ORBIT). "Trouble" may have made the Top 100 for the year had it had a chart run on my chart like it did on R&R, but due to congestion in the Top 20 around that time, the song stalled out at #22 on my version of the chart instead of 17 like on R&R.

1993 was "Love Is" by Vanessa Williams and Brian McKnight. It reached number one in its 13th week on the chart. No other song before the PPW era, was at number 1 after 13 weeks on the chart. This song also spent 20 weeks on the chart.

1. No Doubt f/ Lady Saw - Underneath It All 5. Nickelback - Someday 6. Chingy f/ Snoop Dogg & Ludacris - Holidae Inn 9. Jessica Simpson - With You ??? 1, 6 and 9 were right. But for #5, remember that the title is SIMILAR to a Mariah Carey song, not the exact title. And the other answers, including 1993's top song, were right. Only 5 and 7 remain. (I'm surprised nobody took a shot at #7. Only a few possibililties.) And remember to try to guess the #1 song of 1997. If it or songs 5 & 7 from the "close but no cigar" group are not correctly answered by the time I'm ready to start my game, I'll give the answers away so there won't be a big hodgepodge of songs (i.e. #1 songs of the 1990s, Songs that narrowly missed the top 100, and songs from the Top 100). And, like most years, I'll give ten song clues at a time, but starting this year, I'll try to avoid posting the next ten until every answer is given from the previous ten. There was a little confusion resulting from this in last year's game as I recall. GOOD LUCK!!!

Aaron is right with both his guesses.
As for Jimmy, good guess, but "My Immortal" was only on my version of the chart (which only goes down to 40) for two weeks. It would have had to have debuted at number one and stayed there for another week to get enough points to just make it. The song might make the 2004 list. We'll know for sure a year or so from now.
Anyway, number seven is the only one left. I'm confident that someone will guess it by tonight.

Sorry, that's not right.
BTW, you probably have already noticed that I renamed this thread "2003 in Review (pregame)". When I start the actual game, it's going to be in a new thread, since this one is already two pages long and besides, deals with songs not even on the Top 100 of 2003. The new thread will be strictly for that chart. If all goes well, I'll get the songs totalled up tonight and the game will start tomorrow.
Number seven remains unguessed. The song may have more of a chance at number one than my original clue implied.
