Usually the artist. If a favourite of mine is releasing a new CD, I'll usually get it whether I hear a first single or not. A new artist I'll buy a CD for if the first and/or second single really impresses me. A lot of times people who like the same kind of music as me will recommend a CD and that can sometimes be enough for me!

If it's an artists whose previous albums I loved, then I'll usually buy the album. Otherwise, I'll usually either have to hear multiple songs that I like, or hear really good word of mouth about this band before buying it. Of course, in this day and age, I can "preview" albums by downloading songs online!

The artist is one of the major things for me. If its someone I am familiar with and I have liked their previous albums, I might buy it.
Singles. If the single is horrible, I probably wont buy the album.
Type of music/quality. Kind of self explanatory

Every two months or so, I'll survey all the Mediabase charts (including Country) and download a bunch of songs I haven't heard. In my last exercise, I discovered that I like The Killers' Somebody Told Me.
