Heh... of course, had AT40 switched to their weird recurrent-rule-less chart earlier, 50 Cent would've already shattered the record.

Yeah.  Thought of that one.  Thankfully, we were spared of that punishment. ;)  If there's a record to be held, I'd rather it be held by a "good" song, IMO.

Although I prefer Here Without You to Run Around, the record is undeserving.  It's not an AT40 record, it's a RST40 record.

It's still an AT40 record. Just because the host changed doesn't mean that the show isn't American Top 40 anymore.

I don't agree with the chart methodology, and I also think that it is extremely hard to compare two different methods like that. In the study of statistics, that wouldn't count as a reliable comparison because the methods of record keeping have changed.

Can't argue that. Chart methodologies have changed so drastically (especially in the last decade or so). Comparing a chart record from now to a chart record from then is like apples and oranges.

It's nice to see the show use this chart record information which makes for a more entertaining and interesting show. However, there was no AT40 from February 1995-February 1998, so how can they say Blues Traveler has this record when quite frankly there was no show.

My question to the AT40staff: What song holds the record for falling off the chart (the most weeks) to re-enter without being re-released as a single?
(remember R&R has a rule about songs not being able to re-chart if not officially released).

No it's not AT40. I'm not sure what the hell it is. Had they just changed hosts, and not the rest of the show around, I'd be more acceptive.

Things change. It's not our old friend AT40. It's still AT40, just a reincarnated version. The show lives on, just in a different form. And it still does it's job.

About there being no show 1995-1998, I wonder if they are comparing to Casey's Top 40, which was still on the air. For all practical purposes, Casey's Top 40 was AT40 during that period.

What they really should do for the years when AT40 was not in existence is say "____ in the USA" instead "____ on AT40." It lends to more accuracy.

Not really. The point of AT40 is supposed to be to count down the 40 biggest hits in the country. However, this new AT40 doesn't even use a chart that's published anywhere. This new show is fine to listen to for entertainment (though it fails to entertain me a whole lot), but it really doesn't tell you "the 40 biggest hits in the USA".

AT40 went through similar problems back when it switched charts from the Hot 100 to the Hot 100 Airplay chart and then to the Top 40/Mainstream chart. For example, new AT40 "records" were set for:

Most weeks at #1: 14 weeks for "The Sign" in 1994. (Long stays at #1 started in 1992 with songs like "End of the Road")

Most Weeks in the Top 40: 35 weeks for "End of the Road" in 1992/93. Previously, the record had been 26 weeks set back in the late 1970s by "How Deep Is Your Love" by the Bee Gees.

Highest Debut: #2 by "Erotica" in 1992.

Even though these were different charts, they were still called AT40 records.

The 43 week record for Blues Traveler is for the R&R chart. I'm not sure if CT40 had 2 extra holiday weeks added to the 43 or not.

I'll leave it to others to discuss the validity of the new AT40 chart. :)

Has anyone been really keeping track of the weeks and stuff though for 3 Doors Down and Blues Traveller? Has the new AT40 stayed true to weeks on in comparison to the old charts records and stuff?

'Headstrong' is still on? I remember my mom changing the station over the Xmas holidays and saying that song sounded like a bunch of people on drugs during the yearend countdown or something.

Yes, the Blues Traveler/3 Doors Down stat is accurate. Even though the chart is not R&R anymore, Ryan did mention some of "last week's" positions the second week of January when he took over. And, peak positions that he's mentioned prior to 2004 are always from R&R, so it all fits together.

On AT40.com, Petey deleted has #40 not #39.

AT40 must be doing something right...Q102 has moved AT40 to Sundays 7A-11A and moved Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 to
Saturdays 5A-9A.

WKSS in Connecticut did pretty much the same thing. Rick Dees now airs Saturdays starting around 5:45, while AT40 now occupies Rick's old timeslot of Sundays at 8:00.
