It didn't hit the Hot 100 until 1998 because up until then non-commercially released songs couldn't chart but it actually gained enough airplay to make #83 as soon as it was allowed. Had it been able to chart in 1994, it may have even made it as high as the 50's.
The song is great. It's a Christmas classic and is always the Christmas song with the most airplay ever year.
The song was reminiscent of the Phil Spector girl group Christmas song sound and that's why it's so successful. It's a contemporary classic!

I didn't know it debuted so long after it was released. I heard about songs debuting after they had still peaked but while they were currents. Has any song ever taken longer to debut? Why didn't they release a single in 1994? You said she has the best selling Christmas album of all-time. Why didn't she try to have the best selling Christmas single of all-time? Does anybody know any famous Christmas songs that had singles? Christina Aguilera and Faith Hill are the only artists who I remember seeing making the Billboard Hot 100 with a Christmas song, and neither was recently. NewSong: "The Christmas Shoes" may have charted also.
Did it make it to #12 on Hot 100 Airplay in 1994? If it did, then it would have charted much higher than the 50s on the Hot 100. Probably, in the same range 10-15.

Yes, it was technically early in 1995 though.
Also, I don't have it entering the Hot 100 until 2000.
Maybe it wouldn't have made 10-15. I forgot that in '94, virtually every song had a single, so this song would have been at a disadvantage. Probably would have peaked around #30 since all the other songs would have had airplay and sales points.
If it made #12 in airplay today though, it would peak around the same on the Hot 100.
Even though I really dislike Mariah, this song is amazing. She sounds wonderful on it and it's very catchy. I bought her album just for this one. I love in the beginning how it starts slower and builds into the song.
I totally agree….a timeless Christmas classic... Financially speaking, this has got to be her most successful record. Mariah will be collecting royalties from this song for the rest of her life
