NOTES/COMMENTARY: [/li][li] In addition to opening the show playing last week's number one, he also recapped last week's top three. I think this is new. [/li][li] Okay, he really doesn't like Avril. Two debuts this week, and he said one was by Nelly. [/li][li] "Someday" is 44 weeks old this week, giving it the second longest AT40 chart run of all time ("Here Without You" had 50). [/li][li] Tying into #29, the last "Damn" song to chart was Sophie B. Hawkins' "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" (a snippet was also played).

Re: Avril Lavigne: This is getting ridiculous. Never before has a song in the Top 20 on the corresponding R&R chart (which would be 7/30 this week, on which Avril moves 23-17) not made AT40 yet. This has to be either a computer glitch or a conspiracy. On the August 6 chart, the song moves 17-12. It better debut on AT40 next week or else I'm going to e-mail them and ask what the heck is going on.

Another 20 says he's giving MHE the Rick Dees treatment and it'll be kept off permanently. And if that happens, AT40 will have lost whatever shred of credibility it still had following Casey's departure in January.

At least "He Wasn't Man Enough" made the weekly charts. I think there was some sort of a glitch in the weird chart AT40 was using back in late 2000 that caused that song, along with several others (I forget which ones at the moment) to be omitted from the chart. They should have had someone to proofread the charts. Yeah, this reminds me of how Rick refused to play "Ms. Jackson" even though it made the Top 20 of R&R. "My Happy Ending" is becoming the "Ms. Jackson" of the AT40 chart!

Maybe they got pissed off that her record company forced them to put "Don't Tell Me" at No. 10 that one week when it actually peaked at No. 11

Maybe they got pissed off that her record company forced them to put "Don't Tell Me" at No. 10 that one week when it actually peaked at No. 11 That makes no sense and is factually wrong. Anyway, I wanted to sum up MHE's spins on AT40 affiliates and comapre them to the #40 AT40 song Lloyd Banks' On Fire, but then I realized that there 172 stations carrying AT40 so I couldn't possibly check all. Here's what I did (copied and pasted from Excel) for the Top 20 leaders for both songs. MHE OF KACZ-FM KAZX-FM KBFM-FM KCRS-FM KDSJ-AM KDUK-FM KDWB-FM KDWD-FM KFMD-FM KFRX-FM KFYN-AM KFYZ-FM KHFI-FM 56 KHKS-FM KHTS-FM KIFS-FM KIIS-FM KIIS-FM KISR-FM KISX-FM KIYS-FM KJDY-AM KJDY-FM KJYO-FM KKDM-FM KKRD-FM KKRZ-FM KKXL-FM KLTC-FM KLYV-FM KMCK-FM KMXV-FM KMXV-FM KNDE-FM KNEV-FM KNOE-FM KNOE-FM KNOM-FM KQID-FM KQIZ-FM KQKQ-FM KQTZ-FM KQXY-FM KRDO-FM KRQQ-FM KSAS-FM 53 KSLZ-FM 52 48 KSMA-FM KSMB-FM 57 KSNN-FM KWLF-FM KWOA-FM KWTX-FM KXXM-FM 89 KYYY-FM KZGZ-FM KZHT-FM 65 KZIA-FM WABB-FM WABB-FM WAEB-FM WAEV-FM WAIV-FM WAKQ-FM WAKS-FM 52 29 WAKZ-FM 44 WAOA-FM WAPE-FM WAYV-FM WAZR-FM WAZY-FM WBHD-FM WBHT-FM WBIZ-FM WBKS-FM WBWB-FM WBZN-FM WCGQ-FM WCIL-FM WCIL-FM WDAY-FM WDKF-FM 65 WDKS-FM WEOW-FM WERO-FM WFLY-FM 31 WFLZ-FM WFTN-AM WFXY-AM WGIC-FM WGLU-FM WHCY-FM WHHY-FM WHTF-FM WHTS-FM WHTZ-FM 56 WHYI-FM WIHT-FM WIOQ-FM WJBQ-FM WJJS-FM 74 WJJX-FM WJMX-FM WKBI-FM WKFR-FM WKFS-FM WKHQ-FM WKHQ-FM WKIB-FM WKIB-FM WKQI-FM 41 WKSC-FM WKSS-FM 69 WKST-FM WKXJ-FM WLAN-FM WLRW-FM WMGB-FM WMLX-FM WNCI-FM WNKI-FM WNOK-FM WNOU-FM 41 WNTQ-FM WPRO-FM WPRO-FM WPXY-FM WQEN-FM WQMA-AM WREZ-FM WREZ-FM WRTS-FM WRVB-FM WRVQ-FM WRVW-FM WSEA-FM WSNX-FM 41 WSOY-FM WSTG-FM WSTR-FM WTCF-FM WTNS-FM WUPM-FM WUPM-FM WVAQ-FM WVKF-FM WVKF-FM WVKS-FM WVRT-FM WWKF-FM WWKF-FM WWST-FM WWXM-FM WWYL-FM WXKB-FM WXKS-FM WXSS-FM WXVA-FM WXXL-FM WXXX-FM 53 WYDL-FM WYSI-FM WYSX-FM WYVK-FM WZBQ-FM WZKF-FM WZNY-FM WZOK-FM WZPR-FM WZRT-FM WZRT-FM WZYP-FM 602 414 MHE has 1.5 times the number of spins as OF, but we can't assume this holds for the other 160 or so stations. Out of MHE's 20 leaders, only 10 carry AT40. Out of OF's 20 leaders, only 9 carry At40. Conclusion: Sorry, can't come to any sort of concrete conclusion due to lack of time & data.

Please don't think that the affiliate list is up to date. They have my station listed as WFTN-AM when it is FM and listed in Boston, MA, when we are in Franklin/Concord, NH. We are playing MHE around 50 times a week and On Fire about 10.

There really are a few things which are keeping it off. Firstly are the recurrent songs. Secondly, while MANY of AT40's affiliates are playing it, other stations have not been spinning it quite enough to give it the oomph that it needs.
I've read in some of the threads things like "looks like the AT40 staff has finally done some research." The entire show is research! And the fact is, they are understaffed. Premiere is very stingy. So far they haven't even offered any of AT40's staff positions on the new AT40 awards show next year. And chances are they won't either.
I will say that the show is very susceptable to anyone from uppermanagement. For example: notice how the credits are now missing? Some bigwig in Dallas wanted the credits gone. So they only basically give credit to Casey Kasem and Don Bustany. The staff doesn't like it, but there's nothing that can be done about it.
I can tell you that your chances of actually having your emails s that you send to Ryan@at40.com read and passed on to someone who can address your grievances are not very likely--unless it's a fanmail to Ryan. But even then it's quite a picky-choosy type deal.

I actually didn't know 90% of that stuff, and I'm glad you shed some light on some of the issues.

There really are a few things which are keeping it off. Firstly are the recurrent songs. On one hand, that doesn't seem like a valid reason because the recurrent songs certainly aren't keeping Lloyd Banks off the chart now are they? But considering it further, I realize that there might be something to that. Most of the recurrents on the chart are likely to be the Hot AC-type songs that stay on forever. Assuming each station has an "ideal breakdown" of song genres they would like to play (e.g. the Rhythmic leaning ones play 70:30 Rhythmic:Hot AC and the Hot-AC leaners play 60:40 Hot AC: Rhythmic) then if their Hot AC quotas are filled by playing "Someday," "My Immortal" and "Don't Tell Me" for the thousandth time, they wouldn't be playing "My Happy Ending". Actually, what am I saying?! If that's true, then MHE wouldn't be in the R&R Top 10 now would it?! Never mind.

^ Yeah, I can understand "MHE" being somewhat lower on AT40 than on R&R, but for a solid top 20 hit nationally (which pretty much deflates the recurrents argument at this point) to not even be in the top 40 among AT40's affiliate stations makes no freakin' sense. There may be a slight rhythmic bias, but not that much (other Hot AC leaning songs have been charting just fine by comparison).
FYI, on WFLZ: Avril, 34 spins (flat from last week); Lloyd Banks, 16 spins (13 last week).

The host doesn't choose to "let" anyone on or kick anyone off. Ryan, Casey, and Rick are all scripted. They ad-lib but they do not tremendously differ than what is given to them to read.

The theory that "AT40 affiliates aren't playing 'My Happy Ending' enough for it to chart" isn't holding water for me. Out of curiosity to prove this, I took a look at the spins for "My Happy Ending" versus "On Fire" (from this morning's update) for the AT40 affiliates in the top 50 markets. Here be the findings ("or less" would, obviously, designate that the song isn't in the station's top 30):
WHTZ - "My Happy Ending" (55); "On Fire" (18 or less) KIIS - "My Happy Ending" (35); "On Fire" (13 or less) WKSC - "My Happy Ending" (36); "On Fire" (14 or less) KHKS - "My Happy Ending" (14 or less); "On Fire" (16) WIOQ - "My Happy Ending" (10 or less); "On Fire" (30) WIHT - "My Happy Ending" (33); "On Fire (25 or less) WXKS - "My Happy Ending" (48); "On Fire" (17 or less) WKQI - "My Happy Ending" (13 or less); "On Fire" (40) WSTR - "My Happy Ending" (45); "On Fire" (18 or less) WHYI - "My Happy Ending" (38); "On Fire" (22 or less) KDWB - "My Happy Ending" (19); "On Fire" (19 or less) KHTS - "My Happy Ending" (45); "On Fire" (23) KSLZ - "My Happy Ending" (51); "On Fire" (49) WFLZ - "My Happy Ending" (35); "On Fire" (16) KFMD - "My Happy Ending" (41); "On Fire" (29) WKST - "My Happy Ending" (12 or less); "On Fire" (19) KKRZ - "My Happy Ending" (54); "On Fire" (15 or less) WAKS - "My Happy Ending" (51); "On Fire" (27) WKFS - "My Happy Ending" (25 or less); "On Fire" (41) KMXV - "My Happy Ending" (39); "On Fire" (20 or less) KXXM - "My Happy Ending" (89); "On Fire" (23 or less) KZHT - "My Happy Ending" (66); "On Fire" (20 or less) WXSS - "My Happy Ending" (16 or less); "On Fire" (20) WPRO - "My Happy Ending" (26); "On Fire" (15 or less) WNCI - "My Happy Ending" (44); "On Fire" (20 or less) WXXL - "My Happy Ending" (44); "On Fire" (18 or less) WNOU - "My Happy Ending" (39); "On Fire" (44) KHFI - "My Happy Ending" (60); "On Fire" (18 or less) WRVW - "My Happy Ending" (42); "On Fire" (27 or less) WKSS - "My Happy Ending" (69); "On Fire" (16 or less) WAPE - "My Happy Ending" (47); "On Fire" (19 or less)
Totals (assuming maximum spins in the "or less" cases) - "My Happy Ending" (1241); "On Fire" (711)
If your bulls--t alarm isn't going off yet, it should be.
For the record, the #40 song on the recurrentless Mediabase chart equivalent to this week's AT40 (7/30) has about 1400 spins. Since there are many more than the top 50 markets that air AT40 (and since Lloyd Banks made the "cut-off"), Avril should be, very comfortably, above 1400 spins.
If MHE isn't on the chart in the next week (as if it shouldn't already be), then, clearly, someone screwed up big time.

WHYI - "My Happy Ending" (38); "On Fire" (2) WPRO - "My Happy Ending" (26); "On Fire" (2) WXXL - "My Happy Ending" (44); "On Fire" (2) Those 3 stations have it at 2, so that can shrink Lloyd's estimated total.

The theory that "AT40 affiliates aren't playing 'My Happy Ending' enough for it to chart" isn't holding water for me. It was for me, up till a week ago. It's inconceivable that they have anything against Avril tho, so it must be a mistake. But what can we do other than email ryan@at40.com which is probably futile anyway?
