I heard an ad on the radio a couple days ago where Ryan mentioned that there were four debuts. Maybe Mis-Teeq fell off and Linkin Park debuts.

Yes. How weird! Although CHUM sticks in those "AT40 Extras". One was "White Houses" by Vanessa Carlton - Not sure if it's just CHUM that does it or if it's like that everywhere ???

You'll note that before the extra is played, there is a Ryan voiceover saying "here's an AT40 extra", but no mention of artist or song title. I'm guessing that since the show cut back to two commercial breaks per hour (from the original four), Premiere decided to give stations the option of playing "extra" songs rather than extended commercials as a "time filler". I have yet to hear any other stations do this besides CHUM.

The Double Play was "Low" by Kelly Clarkson. I think the only thing missing was the soundtrack/movie hit.

Also, the 40 Second Focus was Hoobastank.

Here's some news about Avril, though this is a bit old, but you may still be interested as it was quite a scandal.

The staff doesn't completely know what the problem was with Avril, though they checked into it, and it was an oversight, nothing intentional. The AT40 staff doesn't compile the chart though, it comes directly from Mediabase, so those of you who are quick to blame AT40, you had better turn around and point fingers at Mediabase.

Hmm, maybe I should change my siggy to the one I had about this time three years ago on the old R&R boards?

For those of you who don't know, it was:
I don't trust Mediabase 24/7 any further than I can roll it.

This was due to so many oversights on a Mediabase chart that AT40 and both AT20s went by from October 2000 to August 2001. On three different occasions on the latter, a song mysteriously fell off from a high position on the charts, only to return at a high position the next week.

Hmn, I think we're all assuming that anyone who's working in radio loves music and keeps up-to-date with all the current happenings in the biz. However, this is not true of almost all office jobs out there, so why should we assume it to be any different in this music industry? The only difference here is that there are a bunch of music fans scrutinizing the outputs of those jobs (i.e. charts) so it's not surprising that we're always the first to spot the mistake, rather than whatever bored low-level personnel they have working on, say, removing the recurrents on Sunday night who's probably thinking as he's doing the job: "Argh I just want to get this over and done with and get the fuck out of here."

They were aware of the problem. It took some arm-twisting on their part to get the song on. It is a national radio show, but the staff also has to do what manange ment says, and when management says to use what Mediabase gives you, than that is what you do.

What would you suggest doing... the staff adding the song in on their own. Think about it... the chart that they're using now would be even more confounded in terms of problems if they differed from what Mediabase handed them. That menas songs would be shoved down to make room for Avril, while the records over at Mediabase were different than at the AT40 studio. It just gets to be a mess, and is therefore easier to follow what is given to them.

That is called "Ryan's Wild Track" (think "wild" in terms of using whatever you want, like in the game UNO). Actually, for at least the last several years, Premiere didn't give the option of running extended commercials during Casey's tenure, but had a segment called "America's Top Hits" in which he told a story and spun a song. The Top Hits segment could be used either as a time-filler, and was also marketed as a daily 5 minute show that could be aired Monday-Friday. It was up to the station whether to fill space with it during AT40, play it everyday, or more commonly not use the segment at all.

True. Another example of that is I read that the woman who types the numbers into the computer for the New York Times college football rankings doesn't follow football.
