and the hot items of the moment such as Michael Jackson Or Taylor Swift (who arguably one of the hottest albums out now)? Again, there is no proof catalog titles are hurting Taylor's sales at all. She has steadily been selling around the same for weeks now (even with the Michael hysteria). Really? You've been to every store in America to check this? It looks as if you're assuming. For the record, Fearless is still being prominently displayed in the front of my local Walmart. Which is the only chart I was previously discussing (and definitely the only one I'm currently interested in). The more albums (which are able to actually chart on the Billboard 200) who outsell Taylor will make it more difficult for her to remain in the top Billboard 200 top 10. Catalog titles, again, will not have any affect on her placement on the Billboard 200 (and there has been no evidence to support they have either, just your "theory").

Catalog albums are sold in the same stores that sell new titles. They are not sold as a separate product. Without studying a chart, I will have no idea what is catalog and what is not.
I would agree with everything you are saying if I could look at a catalog CD and a new title and be able to tell the difference. They are both CDs, they both have the same packaging and both are available to feed music tastes of consumers.
Aside from people on this board, do you know anyone who goes catalog CD shopping vs Billboard 200 CD shopping? If I buy a CD, I am going to buy what I want, regardless of age or chart position on the Billboard 200 (as I am sure you do as well)
The more titles selling faster than Taylor Swift, the less likely it will be for Taylor Swift to remain high on the charts. For the simple reason that more dollars are being pumped into catalog titles that could have otherwse been pumped into a Taylor Swift title.

I would agree with everything you are saying if I could look at a catalog CD and a new title and be able to tell the difference. Someone would be able to look at an album such as Thriller (which is a current popular catalog album) and instantly recognize it isn't a new title. I don't see why you keep reiterating this point over and over again. I have agreed the public wouldn't not purchase an album specifically because it isn't able to chart on the Billboard 200. I do disagree however with your theory that any current popular catalog album (which is currently selling more than Taylor) has hurt or will hurt Taylor's sales or her Billboard 200 position. Not if the titles which are selling faster than Taylor's aren't even eligible to place on the chart in question. Basically, your whole point is that current popular catalog albums are going to negatively affect Taylor's Billboard 200 position because she will lose sales to them. There has been absolutely no evidence to support this, none. This is completely hypothetical and since I completely disagree there is no need to continue this back and forth discussion.

Simple economics. There is a finite amount of dollars being pumped into CD shopping.
If more dollars are now being used for catalog titles, that means there is a greater chance for less dollars on Taylor Swift titles. and if there is a greater chance of less dollars being used on Taylor Swift titles, that will hurt and not help the Billboard 200 chart position.
Regarding the other point, you mentioned Thriller, I counter with this. How do I know, without looking at a chart if the first Taylor Swift title is catalog or not (afterall it is an old title and has been out 3 years). There is nothing on the package to tell me that this title is a continuous top 100 title 3 years after release and therefore an exception to the catalog rule.

I decided to stay out of it when it got all technical. Yet it started with my comment...lol, all I have to say is that an albums position on the BB200 doesn't always reflect it's popularity.

If more dollars are now being used for catalog titles, that means there is a greater chance for less dollars on Taylor Swift titles. and if there is a greater chance of less dollars being used on Taylor Swift titles, that will hurt and not help the Billboard 200 chart position. Doesn't that assume the markets for catalog titles and Taylor Swift titles are the same? I'm pretty sure this is not the case. The purpose of the BB200 vs the Comprehensive chart is to fairly differentiate and separate these different markets.

^ Why is Creed on there twice? I'm not sure. I took over updating the list (to specifically track the only album still charting on the list, Fearless) which 2m originally compiled after it hadn't been updated in nearly two months. I assume it was listed twice to show where the album would place only including weeks in the 2000s as well as its rank had its full run been included. I'll remove its first rank as top 10 weeks accumulated in the 90s should not be included on a list representing the 2000s. Longest running albums in the top 10 of the BB200 - 2000-present1 Fallen , Evanescence 43 2 Confessions , Usher 41 3 Let Go ,Avril Lavigne 37 4 Come Away With Me, Norah Jones 36 5 Fearless,Taylor Swift 35 6 The Emancipation Of Mimi, Mariah Carey 34 7 Human Clay, Creed 33* (38 total - 5 weeks in1999) 8 [Hybrid Theory], Linkin Park 32 9 Some Hearts, Carrie Underwood 30 10 All The Right Reasons, Nickelback 29 11 Monkey Business, The Black Eyed Peas 28 12 No Strings Attached, NSync 27 13 Daughtry, Daughtry 27 14 Get Rich Or Die Tryin', 50 Cent 27 15 The Eminem Show, Eminem 26 16 Supernatural, Santana 26 17 Home, Dixie Chicks 26

Taylor Swift moves to #10 this week for the first actual appearance in the top 10 in 2 months Just to clarify so there's no confusion, 2m is speaking of the comprehensive chart and not the Billboard 200 which the list above specifically deals with (where Fearless has indeed logged 35 weeks in the top 10).

Yes, including all those weeks where it was between 12 and 14 in terms of actual popularity.
Taylor Swift's top 10 count = 29 Should also subtract 1 for Carrie Underwood.
The reason I say this is because all the other albums in my list were in the top 10 and not outsold by catalog albums.
Doing it this way would make it an even comparison.

Yes, including all those weeks where it was between 12 and 14 in terms of actual popularity. Which isn't relevant to the list I've been updating. It isn't dealing with the comprehensive chart but the Billboard 200 (and as you so eloquently said the Billboard 200 doesn't necessarily represent the most popular albums of any given week as it only includes new/current titles) for the umpteenth time. If you feel the need to "correct" the list following every one of my updates with what you "feel would make an even comparison" at least try to be more specific so it doesn't confuse people. It seems we must have this discussion with every new page.

Until recently most people believed that the Billboard 200 was THE official popularity chart & that the comprehensive chart was not relevant. I know this because every time I posted the Comprehensive chart & not the BB200 (until recently) people would always ask me if I could post the "real" chart, since that is the one that appears in the magazine & is the most widely quoted and published of the album charts.
So yes, I will continue to point this stuff out. If an album is the 14th biggest seller of the week but shows up at #8 on the real "official" chart, something is wrong and lists like the one I created need to be looked at differently.
I am not going to stop you from posting updates to my list from that viewpoint. But I will also point out mine

All well and fine, do what you must. However, I don't think it's too much to ask to be specific though. When I update the list (which deals with the Billboard 200, again) and show Fearless has spent 35 weeks in the top 10 (which is factually correct) and then you then respond with "Taylor Swift moves to #10 this week for the first actual appearance in the top 10 in 2 months, giving her a total of 29 weeks in the top 10" people are going to naturally assume you're speaking about the Billboard 200 and not a completely different chart; it just confuses people as to which is the actual total. All I am asking is that you reference which chart you're speaking about (which in your case is the comprehensive chart).
Fearless - Top 10 Billboard 200 - 35 weeks Fearless - Top 10 Comprehensive Chart - 29 weeks.
