I have a trivia question. I'm trying to figure out which artists have the most successive decades with #1 singles. I can think of only a few artists who have 3 decades: Michael Jackson (70s/80s/90s) Madonna (80s/90s/00s) Janet Jackosn (80s/90s/00s) Stevie Wonder (60s/70s/80s) But that's all I got. A few artists will probably join in the 2010s (90s/00s/10s) - Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, maybe Christina Aguilera. MJ has a tiny shot of adding 00s to his list, but that seems unlikely now given the release strategy for This Is It. I can't find anybody with four decades. I would think Janet or Madonna has the best shot at that, although I wouldn't be surprised if both are done earning #1 hits at this point, since their last were in 01 and 00 respectively. (Although Madonna sure came close with 4 Minutes!) Closest one is Cher (60's/70's/90's)

The 3 consecutive decade list longer than 4 Aye. Elton John comes to mind as the obvious omission ('70s: Don't Go Breaking My Heart et al, '80s: That's What Friends Are For, '90s: Something About the Way You Look Tonight et al) ... out of curiosity, who else?

I don't know that there's that many more who qualify. If you count thier work with groups, you can add a few more. Diana Ross had many #1s with the Supremes before having her own solo #1s in the 70s and 80s. And three of the Beatles (sorry, Ringo) would qualify. There's a couple near misses - Elvis hit #2 with Burning Love in 1972, and the Rollins Stones hit #2 with Start Me Up in 1981. I think you're hard-pressed to even find artists who scored a top ten in four consecutive decades, much less #1. Cher certainly qualifies. I suppose you could stretch it to include the aforementioned three Beatles members if you count "Free As A Bird" in 1996. I think Santana comes awfully close. Not sure who else.

Michael Jackson had top ten hits in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. I'm pretty sure Aerosmith did, too.

Catalog titles to place in the Comprehensive top 10 since 1991 1998 - Grease - Sountrack (#10) Was there any specific reason for this?

From 1999 through now, the most #1's by main artist: Usher 7, Mariah/Beyonce 5 4: Rihanna, Nelly, J. Lo (Huh.), Destiny’s Child 3: Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Sean Paul (Huh.), Outkast, 50 Cent, Fergie, Christina Aguilera [arguably 4] The only white artists are Britney & her ex. If one combined solo artists with their bands, it'd be Beyonce/Destiny's, Usher, Fergie/BEP & Mariah. If you're referencing race, Christina and Fergie are white, while J.Lo is latina (sometimes categorized as white). (I suppose you could argue Christina is latina as well, but these distinctions are so fuzzy and I don't think she is primarily seen that way). BTW what's the reason for picking 1999? Seems an arbitrary year to choose, although it is true that it was the first big year for several of those artists listed.

If you're going to nitpick on race, then probably almost no one on your list could be classified as any particular race. Many (probably most) black people (particularly in North America) have some white ancestors, many white people have Native American ancestry (I do, but I would never call myself Native American), etc. White isn't like "plain-flavored" race where if you have any other racial ancestry, it automatically trumps the white part. It's about how an individual identifies themselves, really.

Well even though Fergie and Christina do have colored eyes, and do look white, Chistina's dad is Ecuadorian so that gives her the Latina Heritage. Now Fergie's is arguable, her Grandma was born in Mexico so it's not that direct, though she did grow up in a city where there was an even amount of white and hispanic people, so much of the little Mexican culture that was taught at home, she shared with many friends.

Feels Like Today was released in mid-October 2004, it is fair to say that it got most of its sales in 2005.

Yes so that's one before 2005, one not.
I mean, Number Ones I believe has the majority of its sales from this year. Does that make it a 2009 release?

The official ruling is that it is a 46-1 jump, because it was #46 on the test charts and published as a 46-1 jump in the magazine

'ANGEL' ON HIGH?
Hi Gary,
I was wondering why R. Kelly and Celine Dion's "I'm Your Angel" wasn't listed among the No. 1 Hot 100 debuts listed in Chart Beat Wednesday. I remember that this song had the distinction of making an "invisible" jump to No. 1 when Billboard revised chart policy to allow non-commercially-available singles to chart in 1998.
Thanks, Garrett Godbey Tampa, Florida
Hi Garrett,
For a detailed explanation as to why Billboard does not consider "I'm Your Angel" a No. 1 debut on the Hot 100, I asked Billboard Director of Charts and Hot 100 chart manager Silvio Pietroluongo. Here is his response on the intricacies of the song's chart history:
"The Hot 100 implemented a drastic methodology change in the issue dated Dec. 5, 1998, allowing airplay-only tracks to chart. Before this issue, only songs available for purchase as a physical single were eligible to appear on the Hot 100.
"On the printed chart dated Dec. 5, 1998, 'last week' rankings and weeks-on-chart totals, including those for those songs that had yet to chart, reflected what they would have been had Billboard used this new methodology in prior weeks. Therefore, 'I'm Your Angel' was shown to jump from 46-1. It just so happened that the song was made available as a single in that chart's tracking week, causing it to jump from its airplay-based No. 46 position to No. 1.
"So, while the title's first week on the Hot 100 was at No. 1, the chart of record for Dec. 5, 1998, treated it as a move to No. 1, not a debut. Because of that, we are not counting it among official Hot 100 No. 1 debuts."

Billboard.com:
LUCKY 13: Taylor Swift's first hit song was "Tim McGraw." So, it's a bit eerie that in a week where Swift makes major chart news, so does the namesake of her breakthrough smash. (Halloween is, of course, just days away).
Tim McGraw debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with "Southern Voice," a bow that establishes a first in the chart's 53-year history.
Becoming his 13th top 10, McGraw has now reached the top tier with each of his Billboard 200 chart entries, a discography that dates to his sophomore set, "Not a Moment Too Soon," in 1994.
Prior to McGraw, no artists had sent their first 13 charted titles into the Billboard 200's top 10 since the survey's March 24, 1956, inception.
In setting the new mark, McGraw breaks a tie with an artist who posted his 12th top 10 in his first 12 tries 49 years ago. Between his 1957 arrival and 1960, Johnny Mathis notched 12 top 10s (counting three separate top 10 runs for "Merry Christmas" in 1958, 1959 and 1960 as one title). His 13th charted album, "I'll Buy You a Star," peaked at No. 38 in 1961.
One legendary act came oh-so-close to maintaining a perhaps unbeatable career-opening top 10 streak. 26 of the Rolling Stones' first 27 albums reached the top 10. The only one that didn't? Their first, "England's Newest Hit Makers/The Rolling Stones." The position at which the set peaked? No. 11.

www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/ask-billboard-idol-worship-1004051126.story?page=2THIS ... IS "AMERICAN IDOL" ... CONTINUED An item in yesterday's Chart Beat compared the debut positions on the Billboard 200 of each "American Idol" first- and second-place finalist's introductory albums. Based on reader feedback, let's expand the scope to include each album's first-week sales figures, according to Nielsen SoundScan: 2009 No. 11, Kris Allen, "Kris Allen" (80,000) No. 3, Adam Lambert, "For Your Entertainment" (198,000) 2008 No. 3, David Cook, "David Cook" (280,000) No. 2, David Archuleta, "David Archuleta" (183,000) 2007 No. 10, Jordin Sparks, "Jordin Sparks" (119,000) No. 10, Blake Lewis, "Audio Day Dream" (98,000) 2006 No. 2, Taylor Hicks, "Taylor Hicks" (298,000) No. 2, Katharine McPhee, "Katharine McPhee" (116,000) 2005 No. 2, Carrie Underwood, "Some Hearts" (315,000) No. 4, Bo Bice, "The Real Thing" (227,000) 2004 No. 8, Fantasia, "Free Yourself" (240,000) No. 52, Diana DeGarmo, "Blue Skies" (47,000) 2003 No. 1, Ruben Studdard, "Soulful" (417,000) No. 1, Clay Aiken, "Measure of a Man" (613,000) 2002 No. 1, Kelly Clarkson, "Thankful" (297,000) No. 20, Justin Guarini, "Justin Guarini" (57,000) Thus, while 2009 and 2008 have marked the first years in which the "Idol" runner-up has launched at a higher spot on the Billboard 200 with a debut album than the same season's champion, 2009 and 2003 are the only years in which the opening sales sum of the runner-up's maiden release topped the victor's. To take the comparisons further, we can also rank the above albums by sales to-date. Here are the top 10-selling debut sets by "American Idol" winners and runners-up: 6,876,000, Carrie Underwood, "Some Hearts" 2,784,000, Clay Aiken, "Measure of a Man" 2,732,000, Kelly Clarkson, "Thankful" 1,793,000, Fantasia, "Free Yourself" 1,791,000, Ruben Studdard, "Soulful" 1,257,000, David Cook, "David Cook" 1,028,000, Jordin Sparks, "Jordin Sparks" 740,000, David Archuleta, "David Archuleta" 704,000, Taylor Hicks, "Taylor Hicks" 672,000, Bo Bice, "The Real Thing" It's additionally worth noting that, although he finished fourth on "American Idol" in 2006, Chris Daughtry's band Daughtry has sold 4,575,000 copies to-date of its self-titled debut release.
