Well, he's done it again. Last week was another "special" edition of the Weekly Top 40 for Labor Day weekend, and now this week Rick's doing a "pull 'em out of a hat" style chart. His chart looks absolutely nothing whatsoever like the corresponding R&R chart. Remember when you could get up on a weekend morning and actually hear the official pop chart counted down on the radio?

You can see the "chart" at www.rick.com/top40chart.html . It really is especially nuts. According to the 9/3 R&R pop chart, Outrageous should be #34 not #16. On Fire should be at #46 not #21. Finger Eleven is 10 spots lower than it should be. Debuting at #39(and he said it on the show) is Word Up by Korn. Falling off prematurely are Feelin' Way Too (Damn)Good and Everytime. Not yet debuting is Car Wash. (I hope Rick is having a great rest. Sounds like he needs it. Just kidding.)

Gah!?! That chart is all over the place! But, at least here, "Yeah!" has the decency to drop to #30. And Korn? "Word Up" is currently at #174 on the Mediabase chart. There are some songs where you could kind of "fake it" and sneak them on the chart, but this is a bit of a stretch. It'll be most interesting to see the chart movements next week if/when he returns to a "normal" chart.

I think there's a battle this week over who can have a more screwed up chart.

On a more positive note, I did like the #1 segment. This year, 2 siblings have hit #1 with solo hits: Jessica and Ashlee Simpson. The last time that happend (and possibly the ONLY other time that happened) on the R&R charts was in 1991 with Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do" and Michael's "Black or White."

I think it's interesting! You people already know what the Top 40 is based on R&R and you can already hear the songs. I'm sure it would be a fun chart!

I guess that's a matter of opinion. Me, I never look at the charts until after I hear them on the radio. (Assuming Rick uses the correct chart in a given week -- and I can always tell without even looking when he doesn't!)

I was half asleep during part of this show and I vaguely remember a goofy story as a lead-in to "Freek-A-Leek". Anyone remember what it was?

I listened to that part of my tapes of the show again. (I always tape it on 2 120 min. audiocassettes, using timers for the first 2 hours. 6AM too early!) The story is that Michael Jackson taught Petey deleted how to sniff out a hit. How to recognize the "smelly jelly" or that "special little hook" that makes a hit.

I don't get it. Is this a special show or something? Is he acting like it's a normal countdown? Does he mention last week's positions? That's not been mentioned on the website for a couple months now. Korn?? ??? If this is supposed to be a regular show, it's reached a new level of inaccuracy even by Dees standards.

It wasn't a special show. He sometimes said that a song moved back up, but really almost no mention of the previous week's positions. He said that Dip It Low was #2 again, and that we have a new #1 song. The previous week was a special Labor Day countdown which I didn't hear, here in Miami, due to Hurricane Frances coverage. He never mentioned Media Base this week. This is all similar to what happened during the 4th of July period this year. It was 3 weeks of special, weird, then half-normal.

This week was treated as a regular countdown. There was a Sure Shot and no mention of it being a "special" of any kind. Rick just didn't mention any chart movement.
What gets me it that whoever writes and produces this show seems to think the audience is a bunch of idiots. Even for the casual listener who doesn't follow the R&R pop charts like we do, I should think it would be glaringly obvious that Rick isn't following a consistent chart from week to week. And then he returns from vacation acting like he's been using the correct chart all along. (i.e., he'll play a song at #30, then the next week it's "up 2 spots to #23"). It's totally absurd and completely unnessecary.
If I had the slightest idea who to write to about this, I would, but fo course nobody ever answers the emails sent via Rick's website.

The story is that Michael Jackson taught Petey deleted how to sniff out a hit. How to recognize the "smelly jelly" or that "special little hook" that makes a hit. Thanks. Yeah, I was having a vague dream at the time, basically an flashback of about twenty years ago when my friend and I were at my house making peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and he found mold in the apricot preserves. As he was going to throw it into the garbage, he sniffed it and practically barfed, since it smelled so bad. Obviously, the term "smelly jelly" was what called that incident back to mind.

Maybe he's simply using a different chart.

Maybe he played "Word Up" because he likes it. He found out about the song by checking these Pulse Music Boards ???

Just like he likes "Accidentally In Love" by Counting Crows, since he added that song about a month before it even made the CHR/Pop Top 40.

Uh oh. Q102 Philadelphia has moved Rick Dees to 12 AM-4 AM Monday mornings. With New York and Boston (and possibly other major cities) replacing Rick with Ryan's AT40, will Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 be cancelled soon?

Boston...replacing Rick with Ryan's AT40... Actually, Boston's Kiss 108 (WXKS) dropped Dees in favor of AT40 a good 3 or 4 years ago.

My guess is that Rick will soon be gone as Seacrest using more and more Dees stuff.

The new chart is up at www.rick.com/top40chart.html . It is correct(based on 9/10 R&R) except for Tangled Up In Me being at #40 instead of Nickelback, and Outrageous instead of Everytime at #36. I guess his vacation is over.

Did anyone hear Casey Kasem's voice on Rick Dees' show last weekend? LOL! I wonder if Casey even knew he was on there. :)

The Casey Kasem bit was funny. I forgot what Casey said, but it was the name of some country.
The strip search joke was funny too.
