Good since this thread is at the top, let me post my movie recap here.
Congratulations Jennifer on your Golden Globe Nomination.
I saw the movie last night and here's my recap.
Upon entering recieved free current week of EW Magazine and free chocolates.
Before the movie starts the woman say's (I guess to get the crowd excited) we are expecting lots of gold trophy's for this one with an Oscar Nomination for Eddie Murphy and a win for Jennifer Hudson.
Next it starts, I'm all excited and expected to be blown away because of all the great stuff I've seen and heard and I was actually bracing myself for the explosion of applause after jennifer's big number.
Anyway, the movie starts and was sooooooo fast it almost made my head spin. There wasn't a down moment , I felt as if I was running a marathon. A few spots weren't seemless and looked a little cheap for such a high budget film (but hey, I'm expecting top notch as that's all I've heard).
Anyway, the singing and dancing numbers were all great but some of them did look lipped (and that's okay, it's a movie so they don't actually have to sing).
Jamie Foxx - Was really great and he did show why he's an Oscar winner in this movie as in my opinion he gave the best over all acting/singing performance. He won't get any nominations though as he's not being pushed for one (plus I think leading man is so full this year, it'd be hard for him to get in). He helped the less experienced ladies to look better in their acting scenes (they appeared to be better and stronger in scenes with him).
Eddie Murphy - Was good, IMO, excellent singing numbers and I could tell that he was actually singing these songs at that time. The man has a great voice. He was really funny in the movie, there was one point when he and the dreams went to perform at an all white club and the looks on those people's faces when eddie started to go all church was priceless (some even left). LOL, I guess that wasn't "their kind of music", I always see people writing that on message boards, now, I guess I see what they mean. Overall, he was pretty solid.
Beyonce - I thought beyonce was great, her outfits, her her class, the looks that she pulled off in this movie made it actually look like 1950 at times. She pulled off being a 16 year old on up to adult hood absolutely superb. When she played the younger, she acted that way, all excited and bright eyed. When she played the 30 year old part she grew into that woman extremely well. Of course she pulled off certain spots better then others but that happens with all non-actors. Beyonce also holds my favorite performance of the entire film "Listen". I loved that, it's now my favorite from dreamgirls. 25 years from now if there is ever another remake of Dreamgirls I can see this number being touted as the showstopper. I think beyonce is going to do with this song with Jennifer Holliday did for AITYING, make it the showstopper of the future and the most anticipated. Too bad it's not getting more press either.
Anike Noni Rose - Out of the three main ladies, I thought she had the best overall acting performance and it is ashamed that she's being overlooked here. She was the funniest thing in the movie and didn't miss a beat with dancing, singing or acting. Definitely the winner of the three main dreams.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE
Jennifer Hudson - She had an overall good solid performance. Just like beyonce there were sometimes when she pulled off that powerful diva who doesn't play extremely well, then there were other times where it seemed she was just reading lines off a script (probably because it's her first movie). Her singing was really good, really booming. I braced myself for her number "AITYING" because of all the praise I've heard, it came and went and was just okay for me, probably because I was expecting so much more because of what all the articles have been telling me. I will say this, her acting in that part was really good as the singing appeared lipped at the ending and she ended the song in tears, alone on the stage it wasn't as explosive to me as some have said. So for me the acting of the song was better then the actual song. There were a few claps but no outburst of applause after her performance (and I'm in her hometown so I don't know what's up with that). Anyway overall she did great. Jennifer does have an "Introducing Jennifer Hudson" at the end of the movie of which she received applause.
My favorite part was at the end when Jamie Foxx came down, no words were spoken and he looked at her daughter as if to say this is MY daughter while jennifer was singing a gospelized (I think it was one night only).
Solid movie, moved really fast and can make you dizzy.

It was strange that JH did not mention Holliday when she was on Oprah. She said that Mahalia Jackson and her grandmother were her inspirations for singing the song. She said on Today today that she hasn't ever seen the original Dreamgirls, so why should she mention an inspirtion she hasn't seen? She said she finally saw Jennifer's Tony performance on youtube.

Most people see it on bootleg and that's hard to get as well. So I don't see what the problem is. I've always loved the play and I had the audio of the entire play but it wasn't until about two months ago that I actually saw it on a bootleg copy a friend of mine had. It's so sad they didn't record the original broadway cast on tape.

Really good review, Only One U - and fair, too. About the lipping, don't most actors, when they have a singing role, sing over the song, like a music video? Or, that's what I understood.
Anika Noni Rose may turn out and surprise us all. I wouldn't be surprised to see her get some noms on other award shows. Too bad she is overshadowed by both Beyonce and Jennifer - I guess life imitates art again.

Why does she have to see it? She probably sang along to the soundtrack a million times- isn't that enough for her to be an inspiration? What does seeing it have to do with anything? It's about hearing it, anyway.

I really don't think they should be saying before the movie that Jen is going to win or Eddie will be nominated. This film has gotten so much press, a backlash is starting to set in and that's not good- I hope the rest of the story doesn't also follow Diana Ross. Remember 'Lady Sings the Blues?" Everyone said Diana was going to win- Diana started believing it and even had a "Victory after-party" set up- they said when they called out the winner- Diana Ross started to get up out of her chair- and had to sit right back down because they called Liza Minelli and not her. She cancelled the party.

Jennifer Hudson will win Best Supporting at the Globes and at the Oscars.
Beyonce got her nom, she's lucky she even got that considering this movie is all about Effie and not Deena's self-pretentious arrogant self.
Best Actress belongs to Meryl Streep. Her portrayal of "Anne Wintour" was amazing. She was able to be a total bitch, show some emotion, and at the end, smile.

I'm sure none of the actresses in that category stand up to the amazing Meryl Streep; even Jennifer Hudson does not even stand up to Meryl Streep (which is why I think they will continue to have Jennifer nominated in supporting roles - a newcomer will NOT win an Oscar against actresses like Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren). But, they did have to pick four other nominees. I've got no problem with Beyonce being one, if she was convincing in her role as Deena, and, so far, none of the reviews I've seen have said she wasn't. Doesn't matter that she's not as good an actress as Meryl, because very few actresses are

Congrats to all the nominations. I'm glad Bee and Jen played respectable movie roles which didn't require them to be naked and whored up in order to get those nominations. Good luck to Bee, Jen and Eddie.

I guess the world is about to end....I've seen the movie and I'm in utter shock that Beyonce got a nomination for Best Actress! While I will admit her singing is great and her stage presence is stunning...her acting is horrible. She tries too hard when she smiles...she tries too hard when even when trying to be subtle. Beyonce and her father ought to be ashamed for pushing her for Best Actress when we all know the studio should've pushed for Jennifer Hudson who does an amazing job. God forbid Beyonce isn't the center of attention for one thing. Even the mention of her name in a list of amazing actresses such as Meryl Streep is laughable. Why on earth would Beyonce be nominated for best actress when her role is miniscule and compared to Jennifer's role? I guess its the politics of the business. And to those die hard Beyonce lambs, I am also a beyonce fan but come on...we've all seen her in The Fighting Temptations, Carmen, and Austin Powers. B*tch can't act for the life of her. Her father is insane too. www.eonline.com/gossip/planetgossip/blog/index.jsp?uuid=87ad24c9-a7bb-4013-8023-c75f4877de94

Exactly, Beyonce was excellent in this movie. The only people who've said she sucked are her haters and she must only have about the same five haters as the way she sells both in albums and downloads she can't have many haters. Anyone who's seen the movie and thinks that any of them are "bad" aren't watching the movie. Granted I wasn't wowed by any of them in the way that some of the reviews have been by fans like myself and pros but it was still a good movie. I suggest you all watch the movie with open eyes. No one was truly "bad" and to me Jennifer wasn't as good as everyone is saying, she wasn't bad either but she was not better then the rest of the cast. The guy who played her brother was excellent. It was funny because when the movie first opens Steve Urkle is one of the first players you see. I was like "there is Urkle", he looked great though.

I have the album and I really like it. I think they all do a great job. I really like Eddie on "FAke Your Way to the Top"- great song. And I really like "Family" - I have to admit Beyonce is perfection on "Dreamgirls" (What a fantastic song- I kinda wish this could be a single) and "Listen" is INCREDIBLE. It is a showstopper, though Jennifer does have the best performance because "And I'm Telling You" is just such a great song- and Jennifer does awesome on the "Dreamgirls (Finale)" song. I'm not that crazy about "One Night Only" and I really don't like "I am Changing"- "When I first saw You" is a great song. They ALL do great. I really really HATE the dance version of "And I am telling you"- it's so 1992! And what I really dislike about it is that Jennifer does not re-do any vocals- they take her exact vocals off "And I'm Telling you" and try to build a dance song around it- it doesn't work to me, not at all.

Is that why she just got a Golden Globe nom for Best Actress? They just didn't nominate her cause she looked beauitful.

For those who don't understand the politics of Hollywood...Sony Pictures produced the movie Dreamgirls. Beyonce is signed to Columbia Records which is owned by Sony. For awards in music and in this case, movies, the company usually asks its workers, who are voters, to sway their vote to certain actors/actresses. In this case Sony pushed for Beyonce, their pride and joy for Best Actress. Why would they do this? Well Beyonce gets all the publicity she needs to sell more records. Hopefully the Academy won't be affected by this.

Why didn't Bill Condon get a nomination if noms can be so easily manipulated? From what I hear, he has done a marvelous job on this project. I really doubt you have seen this movie. You review is rather empty!LOL I didn't think they had a screening in Iowa

First off it wasn't a review of the movie. It was a review of Beyonce's acting. That is probably why it was "empty". And no they probably don't have a screening in Iowa so im glad im working in public relations in nyc.
