Since Beyonce got nominated for an acting award. Maybe next year she'll win an Olympic gold medal for track and field.

Um. He wanted to know since when Iowa equaled NYC, not that it equals Beyonce's acting. Don't shy away from the question

First off it wasn't a review of the movie. It was a review of Beyonce's acting. That is probably why it was "empty". And no they probably don't have a screening in Iowa so im glad im working in public relations in nyc. Fuckin' liar. You probably have never been to NYC.

TLCForever, Bulls***. I live in LA and am an actor. You know nothing about the industry. The Foreign Press is in charge of the Globes. Not the Academy. That means less "industry" types. And, anyway, this is not a Miramax film and the Weinsteins aren't involved. Those are the people who play the dirtest. Go pick up Variety or the Hollywood Reporter and learn a few things...
Also, the business in NYC (if that's where you really live) is totally different from Hollywood. So I understand your confusion.

Also, the business in NYC (if that's where you really live) is totally different from Hollywood. So I understand your confusion. First off, why don't you pick up a dictionary and learn how to spell. Obviously you're not a working actor, because you would know that Sony is part of the major business conglomerate known as Bertelsmann which owns; cable tv, radio, magazine publishing, and newspaper publishing around the world. All of those mentioned above are a collective part of THE FOREIGN PRESS which votes for the Golden Globes. Get it? Who said anything about the Academy? They are not that stupid. Mark my words she will not be nominated for best actress when the oscars come around. I believe the voters were bias and had a loyalty to their companies. Believe what you may but this is simply my opinion. I never said Beyonce wasn't great in the movie. All I said was that she is not a good enough actress to be in the Best Actress category. While she is an amazing singer she is a weak actress. Next year we'll see Solange in the same category and you idiots will be all over her p*ssy too. And I am not the only one who can't stand that she got nominated. Here are some reviews of her acting. perezhilton.com/topics/film_flickers/dreamgirls_the_backlash_has_begun_20061215.phpwww.usatoday.com/life/movies/reviews/2006-12-14-dreamgirls-review_x.htm

TLCforever...
1. You are the one who brought up the Academy. (see: first post)
2. Your previous argument was that because Beyonce is on Sony Records and the film was produced by Sony Pictures that meant they (Sony Pictures workers) had to vote for Beyonce. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
This is why I brought up the foreign press. To be in the foreign press you have to be a JOURNALIST who works in the industry. Not a producer. And they are the ONLY people who vote in the Globes.
Also, your findings on Bertelsmann should have told you that Sony Music is in a PARTNERSHIP with BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group) that forms Sony BMG. They do not own Sony Music. Sony Music is owned by... Sony.
3. Well, thank you for correcting me on the one word I spelled incorrectly. When I go back to my reunion at YALE, I'll be sure to let everyone know about that. Maybe we can get you an honorary degree?
4. You never know who you're talking to on the web. You have no idea if I'm a working actor or even if I'm famous. I also think you linking to Perez is quite ironic, donchathink?

Legend1982=Solange Knowles
When I asked "Who said anything about the Academy?", I was explaining that I never said the Academy had anything to do with the Golden Globes nominations. I'm fully aware that the Foreign Press is responsible for the nominations. And I didn't have to pick up Variety to learn that.
"Obviously you're not a working actor, because you would know that Sony is part of the major business conglomerate known as Bertelsmann"... so tell me where I say Bertelsmann owns Sony Music Group. Yes, Sony and BMG have a partnership. BMG takes care of the distribution and publishing for Sony. So as a joint company they both benefit from Beyonce's sales.
I guess Yale is handing out degrees to any crackhead that thinks they're an actor. Please know what you're talking about before you try to argue with me.

I notice so many of the reviews talk about how the songs are mediocre and keep bringing up Chicago with their great songs to compare it to. Now I saw Chicago, I don't remember ONE song from it. Meanwhile Dreamsgirls has several songs to me that have always stuck in my head, just from remembering the play and it's exposure. I don't know what these great memorable songs from Chicago are.
The film has been gettting a few negative reviews, but even the negative ones still single out and praise Jennifer Hudson in them as the only best thing about it. There have not been that many but there has been some Beyonce hating in some of the reviews and some cheap shots taken of her but it's not a big percentage.

Well one of the Gigli review said Jennifer was the best thing about it. That means nothing.
Anyways, I totally hate the soundtrack. It's boring to death. The only song I like is the Dreamgirls theme. Such a jam.

One of the things I like more about Hudon's version of "And I'm telling you" is Holliday sings
"I'm not waking up tomorrow morning- ha ha and finding that there's nobody there"
I hate that ha-ha- why in the world does she do that? It just doesn't seem to go with the rest.
And I the only one to notice that Jennifer seems to go off-key at the end of "And I'm telling you"- when she comes down from the big long 'You're going to love me" at the end, it seems when she goes down to "l---o----v----e" she goes out of tune on the "v"- and I keep wondering why that was left in there because it irritates me everytime- hearing it is different from seeing it, though and I'm guessing in the visual performance, it is realistic for her to do that- but it doesn't make listening to it that wonderful- but just that one part I love the rest of it.

I AM IN SHOCK! I just saw the movie- it was TERRIBLE! A complete and utter "mess!" The writing and directing is awful- I have been waiting months for this film! It was all hype! The characters have NO depth or substance to any of them. You never end up feeling you know any of them- they just move from one situation to another and some of it doesn't even make any sense.
Jennifer is good- but there's not alot of acting she really has to do- and her actions don't even seem logical in many ways. She is the best thing about it- but it's because she's the best character, the others are written really bad- it's not their parts, it is the writing. The reason she is being so praised is because without her, it would almost be unwatchable.
Eddie Murphy is good but he doesn't really have much to do- he acts silly alot of the time- it's not a real drawn-out portrait- shame on people who are saying this is his best work- it is really a one-note character that is thinly drawn and much is cartoonish.
Jamie Foxx single-handedly kills the movie. He is never believable, some of his scenes are just outright bad- and you can tell he's just "acting"- he's the worst thing about it.
Anika is comical at first but by the end of the film, you want to strangle her. She has become so irritating. Beyonce has nothing to work with- and there are no transitions to anything- all of sudden, a character is one way then they are another without any explanation. It is filmed very dark, with drab colors, none of it is vibrant or alive. The scenes trying to be relevant to the "times" is just a JOKE! They are recording a song, Jennifer gets mad and walks out and there is a riot going on! It's laughable- as if a full-scale riot could be going on outside and you not even know it- it's "stupid." The film never knows what it wants to be- one minute they are doing MTV like videos of the songs (with dumb montages to further the plot) then the next they are breaking into song with each other, then it goes back to the MTV videos- it's all just horribly done. It's so disjointed- one minute they are going on to stardom, the next Beyonce is living in some mansion dressed like Norma Desmond- you are never shown exactly WHY they kick Effie out of the group- she causes a little trouble, but you are certainly not shown enough to explain why they treat her like they do when they kick her out. Her own brother doesn't speak to her for nine years?! She has a little girl- no one knows it?!? How stupid are these people? The scenes are so contrived- Curtis sees the little girl at the end and suddenly realizes that is his daughter- it's just terrible. You have to suspend total logic to get through it- Deena's big song- "Listen"- she sings it in a recording booth at Curtis- as if he didn't know the song before she sang it-
I'm so bummed, I was expecting a great film- Jennifer's big moment is incredible and she does awesome singing and acting out the song- but that's the only real masterful moment in the film- the rest just pales next to it. and it's not the actor's fault- it is just written really bad. Don't say I didn't warn you!

WOW! Did we see the same film? I just came back from the film here in LA. I saw it at the Arclight in the dome with a full house and everyone loved it... Were you familiar with the show before you saw the film? Are you familiar with the Diana Ross & The Supremes/Motown story?

Sunpeach, my sister, who is a huge Broadway and movie fan, saw it and had some of the same things to say that you did. She said the reason people are only talking about Jennifer Hudson is because there's really nothing else to talk about. Jennifer's was the only character that was developed; the other were not. And, because the others are so poorly written, it makes Jennifer stand out even more. (Reminds me of that line Jessica Rabbit says in Who Framed Roger Rabbit - "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way.")
Could be why I'm not seeing it on more of the Best Picture lists, while I am seeing Jennifer listed on everything. I think it will still get an Oscar nom, but I'd be shocked if it won against some of the other movies with stronger character development, because actors make up the Academy's largest voting block.
I think there are differences in how people watch movies, though. I know some people who don't care about whether a character is well developed, or if the movie flows in a way that makes sense, or even if there's a strong plot. Dreamgirls is a musical, so as long as the musical sequences are good and constant, and the film is visually stunning, and there is some kind of a plot that makes sense - and I think Dreamgirls succeeds in all of these - it will be enough to keep most moviegoers happy.
I wonder if white audiences will go see this movie in large numbers. From what I've seen on other boards, it's showing mainly in urban areas to largely or predominantly black audiences. If it wants to do big box office, though, it's going to have to appeal to a larger audiences. I expect numbers for this week to be big, since everyone is trying to see it the first week, and then again when it expands in January. Oscar noms didn't seem to help "Ray" all that much.

Sunpeach....are you SERIOUS....I just came back from seeing it, and it was nothing short of amazing!!!
the WHOLE theatre I was in (400+) stood and clapped at the end of Jennifer's big number, AND at the end of the film!!
Jennifer was simply fantastic....best performance of the year (even better than Helen Mirren in The Queen)....and it is a damn shame she's going to be cheated out of the best actress oscarm where she deserves to compete!!!
I understand that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but how can someone can have such opposeing views to a film that pretty much has a unanimous consensus of being "next to brilliant"...it floors me!

I saw the movie and I thought it was great.
My only complaints were this:
Beyonce's acting was wayyyyy too stiff and dull. At times she did really good, but then at most of the time she just fell flat.
For instance, when she packs her clothes and tells Curtis she is leaving, she just talks it or doesn't act it out. She doesn't show any emotion at all. I've seen her do better acting in her music videos.
During the big "you're out of the group" performance, Beyonce did great with the facial expressions but her lip-syncing at one time was off.
Jennifer stole the show. Her performance of AITYING, even though I had already heard this vocal masterpiece on the cd first, the added visual was just spectacular.
And omigod, funny moment, at the end when Effie was with her brother, manager and lawyer and they was gon bust Curtis out for his big "Payola Scandal going back 11 years", I shouted out "MMMHMMM BUY THEM SPINS LIKE CHRISTINA AGUILERA!"
And I sort of wished the movie had lasted 10 minutes longer, I really wanted to see Curtis' reaction to Effie when he finaly found out he had a daughter.
I mean, yes him coming down from the balcony and just looking at her and Effie was great but I'm sure an amazing fight would have ensued.
