Well Vin, this seems to be our rendezvous point. I post it here so you can post it at the OFC if it isn't already there, haha! :)
Anyway, time for the this-week-last-year album sales comparison!
Week 25 (sales from 5/1/06 to 5/7/06) 33,693 albums sold [#27 on the Billboard 200; #5 on Top Country Albums]
Week 77 (sales from 4/30/07 to 5/6/07) 43,842 albums sold [#10 on the Billboard 200; #3 on Top Country Albums]
Again, selling more and charting higher this year than the same week last year. Wow! :)

Carrie will appear on the Early Show CBS www.cbsnews.com/stories/1999/10/04/broadcasts/main64925.shtmlMONDAY MORNING ON THE EARLY SHOW CARRIE UNDERWOOD: Almost two years ago, aspiring country singer Carrie Underwood battled it out with rocker Bo Bice to see who would be named the fourth American Idol. In the time since, the Oklahoma native has become a true country star. Her debut CD, Some Hearts, went triple platinum, earning her two number one hit singles and a nomination for album of the year in the Academy of Country Music Awards. Carrie will join us live from Las Vegas Monday morning.

They tried to release "Some Hearts" back when the album first came out and it flopped. I love "Starts With Goodbye," but I think they should just let it die at this point. She has another album coming out in the fall, so they need to make sure there's enough time for the first single to grow. actually- Some hearts did well- it went to number 12 on AC...that is not bad. It didnt do well on pop, but it did well on AC.

Gretchen Wilson is concerned about Carrie... saw this on CF. www.stltoday.com/stltoday/entertainment/stories.nsf/music/story/533DAB5705DE9D75862572D80079FE00?OpenDocumentThere is one potential spoiler. Just as country music was excited over Wilson's arrival three years ago, it now is applauding all things Carrie Underwood, Wilson's label mate. Wilson and Underwood come from very different places. But apparently there's room only for one pipin' hot country female at a time these days, and Underwood is the one. "They are two separate things completely," Galante says. "They couldn't be further apart in terms of their artistry. Carrie has more of a mainstream pop and country approach, and Gretchen is a stone cold country singer." Wilson sees it a little differently when asked about Underwood. "You think that's country?" she quips. "Here's the bottom line. I'm worried about her. I'm not sure she is experienced enough to handle this business," she says of the singer, whom she has met.

ugh that pisses me off about gretchen. you would think that the female country stars would be more respectful and congratulatory towards a rising star like carrie, for they were in her shoes at one point in their lives too! but all u see is bitter, snipping comments from the likes of gretchen and leeann...i just cant wait for carrie's 2nd CD to break records and rub it into gretchen's face that carrie's 2nd cd WAS NOT a slump!
psh carrie cant handle herself...w/e...

I think Gretchen Wilson said something similar but more positive last May or June...was it to the NY Daily News? Her comment was something along the lines of having become her own corporation in a very short time and it being a lot to handle. This was Carrie's reaction via a no-longer-live link on Y108:I think Wilson would have been wiser to frame her comments in terms of industry/media pressure instead of seeming like she's questioning Carrie's personal ability to handle it. Because for all we know, Wilson is projecting. Maybe Wilson just did a bad job of conveying her meaning.
I -do- think Carrie is and will be under a tremendous amount of pressure when it comes to her sophomore album. It's not just the commercial standard that Some Hearts has set. It's that by virtue of her awards and chart dominance, she is now seen as a current standard-bearer for country music. And that means her next release will be heavily scrutinized for the extent to which it incorporates traditional ("real") country, for how much it "panders" to pop listeners, etc. -- it will be seen as a bellwether indicator of the state of mainstream country music. Even those who acknowledge and celebrate Carrie's talent in Nashville are going to be looking to see what kind of artistic identity she embraces on her next album. Carrie's sophomore album will, I think, be the most heavily scrutinized country album released this year.
It also means that the media is more likely to compare/contrast any artist who wants to represent himself or herself as "edgy" or "real country" to Carrie. After all, she is the most recognizable face of mainstream country music right now and there's bound to be at least some backlash. Fortunately, there are still a lot of people out there (fans, media and industry types) who are rooting Carrie on, and Carrie will have the chance to surprise a lot of people with her sophomore release.
Personally, when I look at Carrie's singles and especially the country half of Some Hearts, I don't think she deserves to be compared to the likes of Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts -- I think Carrie has been releasing better music and showing more variety. And as for the "pop" criticism, well...first, I have to say that I think Martina McBride's "Anyway" and "How I Feel" are less pure country than any of Carrie's singles to this point (even though Martina's country sensibilities are in no doubt, in my view, and she is probably country's best contemporary interpretive singer right now). Moreover, I think it's musically conservative to be held back by genre boundaries. Carrie has shown a pretty good understanding, I think, of traditional country, and I hope she finds ways to integrate that with more contemporary sensibilities, whatever the genre.
Generally speaking, I've been a lot more impressed by the recent work of Carrie, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert, Faith Hill and Gretchen Wilson than I have the work of chart dominators Chesney, McGraw and Rascal Flatts (and let's not even talk about Trace Adkins). I haven't been terribly impressed with the latest from Big & Rich and Montgomery Gentry, either. Rather than pitting the ladies of country against each other, country radio and the country industry should find ways to help them all flourish in an environment that is way too male-dominated.

i think gretchens comments could have been taken out of context. i dont see anything wrong if she thinks carrie is too inexperienced to handle the business. just look at the bulls and their lack of playoff experience, they are being pummelled by my pistons!!! being smart and having experience are 2 totally different things: one you are born with, the other you learn with the smarts you are born with
perhaps, she said the "you call that country" in jest. she's from the st louis area so that could be a paper/journalist she is very comfortable with and joked around. that comment could be in reference that carrie's country is totally different from her own version of country
using another basketball analogy, im a fan of old school slow-it-down halfcourt basketball. what the phoenix suns and golden state warriors are playing with their run and gun offense isnt considered playoff basketball to me!

My first impression was " Meeeeow, nasty!" But we don't see the full context or hear her tone of voice, and like 43dudleyvillas said, she may be projecting based on her own experience.

Gretchen is not being bitchy at all in her comments.
I'd say she has motherly concerns towards Carrie.

People tend to forget all the positive things Gretchen has said. So what if she doesn't think Carrie's album is pure country because it's not. Gretchen has been very supportive of Carrie. Go back to the Faith Hill CMA mess and watch Gretchen's reaction. It wasn't the reaction of a jealous person. She had a big smile for Carrie.
I just don't get mad anymore, and I didn't get mad at the "you call that country" reaction. She's the "Redneck woman" I am not surprised by that response at all. It doesn't mean that she isn't supportive of Carrie. She has already said that she worries about her. It shows she actually cares about Carrie as a person.

Country Universe ACM Picks and Predictions. Here are the Carrie-relevant parts: There are three major country awards given by the music industry, and each particular show reflects the preferences of a different section of it. The CMA Awards, given every fall, are the Music Row awards, where the Nashville music industry - labels, talent agencies, publishers and the like - have the most sway. There is also a sect of voters who favor strong traditionalism in country music, which has allowed for some surprising upsets over the years. Commercialism matters, but isn’t the only factor at the CMA’s. If a big act doesn’t have too much substance, they aren’t likely to win many CMA awards. The Grammys, given every February, are the most prestigious musical honor. Voted on exclusively by artists, musicians, producers and engineers, the country categories have always been dominated by artists with technical merit - singer’s singers and musician’s musicians. Sales don’t mean much at all to these voters, but credibility does. Top winners for the genre include Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Dixie Chicks, Ricky Skaggs and Emmylou Harris. Then there’s the ACM’s, the spring country awards show that actually predates the CMA’s but is generally regarded as less meaningful. ACM voters are primarly in the radio and concert booking fields, so commercialism is a huge factor here. The list of ACM winners from the past is almost exclusively populated by top-selling artists that are also radio favorites. This year’s nominations ensure that tradition will continue. Here’s a rundown of this year’s nominees, along with my predicted winner and personal pick for each category: .... Top Female Vocalist Sara Evans Faith Hill Miranda Lambert Martina McBride Carrie Underwood Should Win & Will Win: Carrie Underwood Sara Evans snuck in there last year to win, but her career has cooled considerably since. Underwood is the obvious winner, as she’s not only the genre’s top-selling artist, she’s also the best singer to boot. ... Album of the Year Brooks & Dunn, Hillbilly Deluxe Vince Gill, These Days Rascal Flatts, Me and My Gang George Strait, It Just Comes Natural Carrie Underwood, Some Hearts Should Win: Vince Gill, These Days Will Win: Carrie Underwood, Some Hearts The stunning four-CD set by Vince Gill has the most artistic merit, but the ACM has been quick to honor big-selling breakthrough albums - previous winners include The Woman in Me, Wide Open Spaces, Killin’ Time, Brand New Man, Not a Moment Too Soon and Storms of Life. Carrie’s six-time platinum debut has never been nominated for an album award, and I expect the massively successful record to be recognized here. It’s a better album than the other three anyway. Single of the Year “Before He Cheats” - Carrie Underwood “Give It Away” - George Strait “I Loved Her First” - Heartland “What Hurts the Most” - Rascal Flatts “Would You Go With Me” - Josh Turner Should Win & Will Win: “Before He Cheats” - Carrie Underwood Underwood will repeat in this category with a hit that’s even bigger than her winning entry from last year, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” Flatts could threaten, but the general enthusiasm for Underwood should give her the edge. She should get extra points for crossing over without remixing the song. Song of the Year “Amarillo Sky” - writers: John Rich, Big Kenny, Rodney Clawson, Brat Pursley; artist: Jason Aldean. “Before He Cheats” - writers: Chris Tompkins, Josh Kear; artist: Carrie Underwood. “Give It Away” - writers: Bill Anderson, Buddy Cannon, Jamey Johnson; artist: George Strait. “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)” - writers: Sam Tate, Annie Tate, David Berg; artist: Rodney Atkins. “Would You Go With Me” - writers: Shawn Camp, John Scott Sherill; artist: Josh Turner. Should Win: “Amarillo Sky” Will Win: “Before He Cheats” Noticing a trend? I’m thinking this is going to be a huge night for Carrie. The momentum keeps building in her career, and this is such a big hit that it’s still going to be fresh in voter’s minds. I love “Amarillo Sky”, but it was too low profile to win. I could see the Atkins smash threatening, but I keep thinking it’s going to be Carrie’s night. Video of the Year “8th of November” - Big & Rich “Amarillo Sky” - Jason Aldean “Before He Cheats” - Carrie Underwood “Hillbilly Deluxe” - Brooks & Dunn “Seashores of Old Mexico” - George Strait Should Win: “8th of November” Will Win: “Before He Cheats” The CMA’s and the Grammys had a great opportunity to finally acknowledge the success of Big & Rich by honoring their epic video, but it’s becoming clear that the industry doesn’t have much interest yet in recognizing their work. This award often goes to artists dominating the night overall, and I’m thinking it might be easier to just seat Carrie Underwood on the stage so she doesn’t have to keep climbing the stairs. ...

^ omg lol! i love that last sentence to seat her on the stage. that would be perfect and hilarious!
while i hope carrie wins every award possible, i would be perfectly content with female artist, single, and video. If she won CD of the year, though, i will be in heaven.
it actually looks like song of the year will be the biggest nailbiter, with CD following...

Ya know, when you read, think, and say "pop" repeatedly in a short span of time, it actually looks and sounds funny. Popopopopop *bops head* popopopopop....
Don't mind me.... I'm feeling a little loony :)
Uh-oh, now I feel compelled to say something thread-related... give me a minute...
ETA: Got it! I hope an amusing blog will do. This guy is enumerating his top 10 most attractive celebrities. Carrie comes in at #5.
#5 - Carrie Underwood: Yes, Underwood is definitely blond. Yes, I am very partial to brunettes. Sometimes though a woman is just transcendently gorgeous. Carrie has that. Her face is absolutely gorgeous and she can sing. After winning American Idol her album Some Hearts has produced smash hit after smash hit. Her version of "I'll Stand By You," was excellent and "Before He Cheats" is soaring up music boards. This girl is a superstar. [Birthday: March 10, 1983] ----- Hey, he deserves some credit for describing Carrie as "transcendentally gorgeous" (I think that's what he meant). I don't think even the DateGuy has used that phrase before :)
