American Idol' Rocker Chris Daughtry Signs Record Deal
07.10.2006
Labels took notice when Bon Jovi cover from 'Idol' disc charted. Chris Daughtry
Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee outlasted Chris Daughtry on "American Idol," but the rocker has earned the same prize nonetheless.
The fourth-place finisher has signed with 19 Recordings/ RCA Records, the same label as McPhee and the same label family as Hicks (J Records).
Daughtry's album, which he's already started recording with some big-name collaborators, is due in late 2006, according to his label's publicist. He will form a permanent band, but no word yet if it will include members of his pre-"Idol" group, Absent Element.
After Daughtry's shocking elimination (see "Daughtry On Elimination: 'I Wasn't Going To Pretend To Be Happy' "), Fuel --- whose "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" Daughtry performed on the show to wide acclaim --- offered him a job as their new singer, but he later declined.
"It's one of those things where I'm really going to have to sit down and weigh out the pros and cons of each situation," he said at the time. "And I've got to think about it long-term, more than just right now.
"I'm a songwriter myself, so to be able to launch my own career would be my dream and be able to write my own music and have a successful career selling out stadiums doing my own thing," he added. "I have to be very careful of what I choose to do because I don't want to make a rash decision and regret it later."
Daughtry's solo signing comes after the singer's rendition of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" debuted at #43 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #16 on Billboard's Hot Digital Tracks, the first song from an "Idol" compilation to chart that high (see "Forget The Competition

Two words: Bo Bice. He thought the same thing, and then got totally screwed when RCA refused to let him record his own songs, and pushed him into pop territory. I wonder if Chris will have better luck with his album.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see if he fares better than Bo did.

I wonder if Chris will have better luck with his album. I think Chris will likely do a lot better than Bo. The problem with Bo was that he was southern rock, which meant he wasn't mainstream enough, so he was given bland pop-rock that didn't suit him at all to make him more mainstream. That resulted in a mediocre album that was so NOT Bo that it lost the more casual fans from the show. Chris, on the other hand, is already mainstream. He is a generic rocker who sounds pretty much like a lot of rockers already on radio. Give him a couple of Nickelback type songs and he'll be ready for radio. He won't have much (if any) credibility as a real rocker, but he'll probably sell like gangbusters.

^ Yep, pretty much like Nickelback itself. They sell truckloads of their latest album but look at their score at metacritic.com. OUCH!

He will be the most successful of this year's Idol contestants. I wouldn't be shocked to see him go double platinum if he is able to work with some good songwriters.

Hmmm... I'm still trying to figure out why so many people are confident on his success.. I mean yeah he's marketable, but I just don't find him anything special. He doesn't have the best voice and he's not the best performer either. He might have success but I don't see him having a longrun success.

Considering that "Wanted Dead or Alive" sold only 69,000 digital downloads in six weeks of release...I don't see the urgency.

He's already started writing songs for his album. He co-wrote a song with Ed Kowalczyk (from Live) months ago and has stated that his album will be nothing pop. Chris had a lot of options to choose from... he would not take this deal if he knew he would get screwed over.

I don't even think Hicks has sold that much of "Takin' it to the Streets". WDOA has done the best from the AI soundtrack.

Sounds like Chris's album may have a chance to be actually good. According to this article, the album will be pure rock, not pop-rock, and Chris is co-writing all the songs on the album. www.newsobserver.com/105/story/463412.html

I was just about to post that - I'm shocked he's co-writing every song!
I hope he does really well. I've always liked his voice. It's incredibly radio friendly.
LOL at the "street cred" comment.
That's cool.
That's awesome.
Wonder who that is?

That's great news about the upcoming project!
I'd rather him do pure rock and instead of pop-rock. That's more his thing.

Wouldn't it be ginchy if he got someone like Rick Rubin or Jon Brion to produce it? That would be a serious Idol album.

It's funny seeing 19R spoils this guy so much, as if he is the winner. How about Taylor? Will he be given all those special privileges too? Looks like Chris is indeed "the chosen one" after all.

I honestly don’t think this guy is all he is cracked up to be. He never really impressed me on Idol and the fact that he is co-writing every song really worries me. Just because he wrote songs in a band doesn’t mean he is an “accomplished” songwriter. Ian Pirie is the same guy who thought “Do I Make You Proud” was a great song. I really don’t trust his ability to hear a commercial hit, let alone an album full of them.
I’ll let Chris try to prove me wrong but as of right now, I don’t expect much from this project.

I'd still rather hear him do original material that he wrote as opposed to trying to do a bunch of rock covers. As much as some artists material isn't the best super duper hit, I'll still take an artist that tries to do their own thing, make their own lane, instead of taking the safe route. I don't even like Kelis that much, but I love how she totally made her own lane.
Music is about originality, not copying everybody else and watching numbers. I don't need the next young jeezy sounding rapper or the next model barely singing over a track. So at least he's writing his own music, coming up with his own stuff and living off that.

After seeing the AI concert last night let me tell you - this guy has what it takes to make it big singing rock music. I hope he gets/writes good stuff cuz I can't wait to buy his cd.
FTR, I liked him on the show, fell out of love with him due to his post show remarks, but last night - fell in love with him more then ever. haha

Well, I'm not gonna count them out TOTALLY, but yeah, more than likely they won't - but the rock songs that he sings so well on the show and tour (Wanted Dead Or Alive, I Dare You, Save Me, etc, etc) are all songs that get good play on POP radio too. And Hot A/C. So I think that he can still stay rock AND get the POP play that he needs to build an audience.
As always though, alot it going to come down to the material. He faces the additional risk of finding songs that won't alienate his AI fans (in other words, anti-Bo Bice cd music). FTR, I liked Bo's cd - but yeah, they weren't the style that his fans were looking for. It's a shame - the cd on it's own, stand alone, is good, IMO, but his fans just wanted different from him.
