ACM numbers are in....
At CBS, the "Academy of Country Music Awards" hit lowest-yet scores on the network, averaging a third-place 2.7/7 in adults 18-49 and 9.2 million viewers overall. It was off more than 20% year-to-year. This, in light of one of the best ACM shows in years.

^ Awww! That's what they get cause they placed it against American Idol. lol.
Oh, and I loved the "Oh Love" clip! Can't wait to hear the whole thing. Is that the first single of Brad?
And... What's the buzz about "Stand By Your Man"? Why did it get spins and does it have a studio version or did they play the live one on Opry?

Very intesting article! Lang: Underwood's online hit may sound death knell for CDsnewsok.com/article/3055269Carrie Underwood's cover of the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You” got the biggest marketing push available in pop music. It debuted during April's two-day "American Idol: Idol Gives Back” feel good-athon, in which Simon Cowell attempted to end poverty and stay out of Dante's "Inferno.” The single is sitting pretty at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is not unusual except for one key factor: The only place Underwood will "Stand By You” is in cyberspace. The single is only available through the iTunes Music Store, and while it is hardly the first digital-only single, "I'll Stand By You” is the first of its type to become a Top 10 hit. Underwood's success with this song proves that consumers will buy online at the same rate they will at record stores. When the obituaries are written for the compact disc, this will likely be cited as a key factor in its demise. All this comes when the music industry's decline seems inexorable. Last year's demise of Tower Records and the disappearance of other retail chains have damaged the industry's traditional methods of selling music, and Jeff Leeds of The New York Times says digital sales are not making up for those losses. In an interview with Los Angeles public radio station KCRW's "The Business,” Leeds told Claude Brodesser-Akner that this stumbling block has become a boulder, mainly because the record labels have not released many major artists this year. <snip>

American Idol: The woman behind the curtain -- a conversation with Cecile Frot-Coutaz latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2007/05/americn_idol_th.htmlAs the sun rises over North America Thursday, the continent will awaken to find itself in a terrifying new entertainment landscape –- a world without Melinda Doolittle. By mid-morning Thursday, every TV morning show and radio call-in program will be ablaze with incendiary debates on what this means for the show, for entertainment, and for the nation. Some will call it the death of the franchise; others will say its business as usual. Many more will point out that winning isn’t even the point any more (see Chris Daughtry vs. Taylor Hicks). The show which inspires more obsessive-compulsive dissection (see my previous 47 or so columns this season) than any the history of television has just thrown blood into its followers’ shark tank. But behind the curtain, the woman at the helm of this circus feels your pain, and understands exactly how the show plays into your most obsessive tendencies. It all begins during the auditions, says Cecile Frot-Coutaz, "Idol"’s Executive Producer and CEO of FremantleMedia North America which along with Simon Fuller’s 19 Productions oversees the "Idol" industrial complex. She explains, “What’s different with this formula is with the audition phase as the viewer you get to play the A&R person. You’re in your couch at home and you see them walk in like they would walk into your office if you were that big music mogul and you get to say, ‘Yeah, he was bad. Yeah, he was good.’ It gets people invested early on in the process. As a viewer you can start rooting for Carrie Underwood or Kellie Pickler from that very early stage. So that by the time you get to the performance shows, you feel that they’re yours in some ways and you have a connection with them and you’ve established a relationship with that character from the moment they were a nobody and they walked into that room.”<Snip> “Every year is different,” she says. “There’s years where it’s obvious a contestant will stand out –- like the Carrie Underwood year. And there’s years when it’s less obvious. The first year was really not obvious at all. We thought Justin Guarini was going to win it. This year, I think, was more of a journey.

I'm sure I missed the details on this Oh Love! Brad & Carrie duet but when is it scheduled for release? Only on Brad's new album? It does sound wonderful. Yes -- per the bn.com tracklisting for 5th Gear, "Oh Love" is Track 10 on the album. The album is slated for release on 19 June. The song isn't currently expected to be released on any other recording, though it's possible that it will be available as an individual digital download at various digital retailers. I edited a correction into my post yesterday afternoon, but wanted to mention that after a little bit of bio reading, and I think it's actually a different Gordon Kennedy that co-wrote "Harbor Lights." The rest of the credits still apply, though -- the one who has most likely co-written "The More Boys I Meet" -has- written for Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill and Garth Brooks and he did co-write Clapton's "Change the World." And yeah, fischbone, I think it's totally wild and SQUEE-worthy that this guy has written something for Carrie now! leilamaurizia, yeah, I totally think it's possible to be a fan of different kinds of country music, and I think the diversity is healthy for the genre. My parents loathe AI, so their first exposure to Carrie was when I played them her album. They loved it so much I wound up buying them their own copy, and they still love it. Their favorite song is "We're Young and Beautiful," but they really like most of the album (especially the country half). One of my wow! moments as a Carrie fan was her performance of "San Antonio Rose" -- her delivery was just so natural and effortless and the way she modulated her voice on that song still blows me away. I do hope for some more traditional country or bluegrass leanings on Carrie's next album because that's my favorite kind of Carrie singing. No doubt, the girl can belt and growl and flat-out SANG. She combines that with an incredibly expressive voice. I'd love to hear her doing a bit of a dialed-back trill on a song that calls for it, and I'd love to hear her singing with that lilt in her voice we hear when she sings the "no one" in TNB (LGO) (the line is "And just like those kids, I didn't want to listen to no one."). Contemporary country-pop is sometimes criticized for encouraging its best female singers to belt or, some would say, oversing. I don't always think the criticism is fair -- there is certainly a place for that kind of song/singing. As it applies to Carrie, I think she doesn't get enough credit for how great she is when she reins in the power. And so while I absolutely expect the power of Carrie's voice to be showcased on her next album and do love Carrie's full voice, I'm hoping there are songs on the next album that further explore the nuances of Carrie's voice. Songs that take advantage of her ability to modulate her vocals in ways that can convey the emotions of a lyric even more convincingly. Songs that showcase the more conversational phrasing that Carrie showed in performing songs like "San Antonio Rose" and "Stand By Your Man." That's one way in which Carrie has a real chance to surprise and impress the heck out of everyone awaiting her new album, and I hope she does just that.

Interesting Vinman...I don't really think that Martina has something against Carrie though but I can see why there would be backlash. Carrie is taking all their awards and she's definitely here to stay!

Whew, that wasn't too bad. I was scared to click that for a moment, haha!
"Discombuburated"? Is that a word, Jimmy? At least it sounds cute.
It was the DJ that brought it up. I didn't sense anything from the shot of Martina. She was teary-eyed because it was immediately after Tim's tearjerker performance. Brooks and Dunn, maybe. But I also still remember Ronnie Dunn after JTTW last year, where the camera caught him mouthing "incredible." And Kix Brooks always has nice things to say about Carrie during his countdowns, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I can believe, however, that there are quite a lot of people who "dislike" Carrie's instant rise to the top of the Nashville mountain. Her Idol beginnings created 2 sides, IMO-- those who were ecstatic that she would be bringing a new audience to country music both in radio ratings and sales (i.e. the suits, who do have more voting power, thus the wins); and those who are resentful that she hasn't paid her dues and is undeserving of this massive success (i.e. the artists who toiled their way up from dingy bars and think that is the "proper" way to make it big). It's a tough, tough business. Being insanely popular and successful isn't easy. Thus, I always find myself disagreeing (in my mind, doesn't make it to my fingers) when people say Carrie has/had it easy. It's never easy.
And FWIW, I just had an epiphany recently. I mean I guess I should have known, but I never really gave it much thought until my websurfing took me some places recently-- all the "big" ones get quite a proportionate amount of dislike and backlash, if you will. Including she-who-shall-not-be-named, Faith, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Kenny, even Garth Brooks in his day. And we all know the constant abuse Rascal Flatts experiences. Don't get me wrong, I'm not placing Carrie and everyone on that list on an equal level. I'm just saying no one's immune and Carrie isn't special on the backlash scale. Oh, you can add Reba and Dolly too. They had their backlash moments as well. Even Martina got some when she had her FVOTY win streak. I know it's not a life-changing epiphany, but it was interesting for me. I guess it's one of the tests for an artist-- if you can take it, hang on, and triumph nevertheless. I'm placing my bet that Carrie can take it. She's a tough cookie, despite the girly-girl she becomes when she's with Tony, hee! Idol helps a little with that toughness-- the criticism she got in the media and on the Interet during her run was harsh (!), as were the predictions of failure after her win. She prevailed, she'll get through all of this too. I want my continued supply of albums throughout my lifetime, darn it! :)

I was wondering if someone was going to try to make something of Martina's teary-eyed face at the beginning of Carrie's TFV speech. I hoped not, because it was obvious she was still reacting to Tim McGraw's performance (she was shown teary-eyed immediately after it ended). I think Jimmy Carter is just going with the flow here, especially since he still doesn't seem to accept that the Faith Hill "What?!" thing was a joke. Also, was Jimmy Carter even at the ACMs? He talked about "wearing out his clicker" (i.e., his remote) flipping between the ACMs, DWTS and AI. So was he watching it all from Nashville or did he attend the ACMs and then watch everything on TV that night from Vegas? Anyway, EW.com has a blurb on Brad Paisley's upcoming album as part of its summer music preview, and the duet is mentioned: Also, vinman -- belatedly, many thanks for all your ACM/media caps!

Official Press Release:
Some Hearts Certified for Sales of Six Million Copies!
ACM-Winning Album of the Year Becomes the First Female Country Debut to Hit the Six-Million Milestone Since 1999.
Nashville, TN – She’s a two-time GRAMMY winner, reigning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, and newly crowned ACM Top Female Vocalist, and the incredible success story of Carrie Underwood reaches still greater heights as her 19 Recordings/Arista Records/Arista Nashville debut album, Some Hearts, is now RIAA-certified Sextuple Platinum for sales of six million copies. One of only two female country debuts ever to reach this milestone, Some Hearts now ranks alongside Leann Rimes’ Blue as the best-selling debut by a country female in RIAA history.
Released November 15, 2005, the disc’s unstoppable sales momentum has powered it to #1 for a remarkable 26 of its 78 chart weeks – holding the #1 position on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart across multiple weeks in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
With a 29% sales jump to more than 56,700 copies sold this past week, Some Hearts reclaims the #1 position on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and surges to #8 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. This sales leap preceded Carrie’s performance and triple win on Tuesday’s 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, where she was awarded Video of the Year (“Before He Cheats”) and two of the night’s top prizes: Top Female Vocalist and Album of the Year, for Some Hearts.
“Wasted,” the fourth #1 country airplay single from Some Hearts (following the success of “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” and “Before He Cheats”), also becomes a #1 video this week on GAC’s viewer-voted Top 20 Country Countdown.
Underwood’s massive cross-format appeal has also delivered Top 10 success at Hot AC and Mainstream Top 40 with “Before He Cheats,” becoming a Top 5 favorite video on VH1’s VSpot Top 20 Video Countdown as well as the first country video ever to air on MTV’s TRL and the first country video added to MTV since 1999.
With this week’s SoundScan sales numbers, “Before He Cheats” also breaks new ground on the digital frontier, as release-to-date total sales vault to 1,228,511 downloads, ranking “Before He Cheats” as the best-selling digital country song in chart history.
Some Hearts remains the best-selling, single-disc country album by a solo artist (male or female) in the last six years (since Tim McGraw’s Greatest Hits released in November of 2000) and the best-selling, single-disc country album by any artist since the release of the Dixie Chicks’ Home in August 2002.
Fans can be watching for American Idol’s Season Four champion as she returns to the Idol stage for a performance on the show’s May 23 season finale.

Way to go Carrie! I love the little 'single-disc' mention because that rules out competing against You-Know-Who's last studio album, which was a double disc . Can't wait to see her back on American Idol. What's the chances of her singing "I'll Stand By You"?? lol

She'll probably sing ISBY or BHC. If she performed BHC... I can't even imagine how much the downloads would increase. She's peaking over at pop so it's PERFECT timing to perform it on Idol. She would definitely be top 10 on Billboard the week after.

ISBY seemed like a one-time thing. BHC seems too "controversial" for Idol-- *gasp* an Idol winner singing about vandalism and destruction of property on the ultimate family show *gasp*. But anything's possible, and I would love for her to sing BHC. I'm hoping for an all-winner performance from the 5 Idols. I would love to see that! And I think it's a possibility considering 3 of the 5 have already confirmed their presence for finale night. I'm not up to date with Ruben and Fantasia's skeds so I'm not sure if they've said anything about it. But it would be great! I have affection for all of them and it would be a great Idol moment.
As an aside, I think I like the word sextuple :) How dirty! Ha!

Martina's demeanor when she presented the Album Of The Year award to Carrie showed absolutely to evidence of any animosity towards Carrie.

Oooh, I wouldn't mind either if she performs "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore." That would be a great way to end this album era. This would be her last TV appearance before the promo rounds for the new album, right? Well, the televised Opry performance on June 5 would technically be the last, but still... that's on GAC :)

^ I was thinkin' that too. "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore" would be a fantastic song to sing on the Finale. But maybe we'll get lucky and she'll do "Sweet Child of Mine". I just hope she doesn't do JTTW, DFTRM, BHC, or Wasted. Something new for the Finale. And when I mean new, I don't mean 'new' like 'new material', just something we haven't already seen.

I would DIE if she performs "I'll Stand By You" or makes a duet with either Kelly or Blake and Jordin (like last year).

Carrie has said she likes Kelly and vice versa. It's the fans that don't agree...but oh well....I think it would be great for them to duet.

jeff, did you see that Howard Cohen replied to your query over at his blog? His comment:EEEEE! for Carrie and Brad harmonizing! I think the timbres of their voices match up very nicely. Yay for an AI finale performance from Carrie! I don't know what she'll sing, but was thinking that ISBY is a likely choice -- that way, AI gets to pat itself on the back again for IGB and tout the record Carrie's version of the song set for an iTunes exclusive, etc. Plus, it's purty! Between ISBY, BHC and IAICA (which I would -love- for Carrie to sing), Carrie has a bunch of good options assuming she is singing solo (I would think she is). Although I can't say I'd complain if she and Brad debuted "Oh Love," either. ETA: I didn't see this quote from Carrie re: songwriting here before -- it's from the ACM backstage press via CMT.com:
