Friday July 27, 2007 By Roger Friedman Fox News Kelly Clarkson gets the picture, finally. There was no bucking the system, and no going against Clive Davis. Sources tell me that Clarkson has agreed, through her wise new manager Narvel Blackstock, to make a pop album for release in 2008 with songs selected by Davis and his team. Clarkson's acquiescence comes at the end of a long melodrama concerning her current, turgid album "My December," which features a lot of ragged self-penned songs by Clarkson about a relationship gone sour. Davis didn't like the album, considering it was the follow up to Clarkson's multimillion selling "Breakaway." But he released it, and Clarkson responded by dissing him and then apologizing earlier this week. In the meantime, "My December" is sort of free-floating away now, and will probably sell a respectable 850,000 copies in the U.S. and maybe the same worldwide. Clarkson gets points for trying out her chops as a songwriter, but demerits for not following anyone's advice, trying to take on the record industry's most astute executive maybe of all time and acting like a 25-year-old (which is, in fact, her age.) The news about Clarkson's next move came Thursday during the annual UJA Federation lunch at which Davis was honored. Everyone in the biz was there - the room was so packed that there was little space between the tables for waiters to maneuver or for good schmoozing. The result was a $1 million-plus take for the day. The money goes into the Music for Youth educational campaign which brings music to public schools. Talk of Clarkson was abundant, but it was another "American Idol" player who made headlines at lunch. Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson performed two songs as a tribute to Davis: Barry Manilow's "Weekend in New England" and "One Moment in Time," a song that Whitney Houston made popular long ago. Using the Hotel Pierre's crummy P.A. system and a badly scratched, barely tuned piano, Hudson gave a spectacular little show. If anyone doubted what she can do, that's over. Hudson is a superstar in the making (in contrast to a Federation performance by Ruben Studdard a few years ago). Even Clarence Avant, the beloved record guy who once ran Motown, was impressed. Davis's peeps were more than excited that Clarkson's situation had been resolved, they say. There are no hard feelings over "My December," but let's just say everyone's waiting for her January now. www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,291060,00.html[/quote]

Well thank god My December era ended pretty quickly, but I never expected it to end this quickly! I think this is a good move. Never Again and Sober were and are disappointments, and My December was one too. But Kelly is out of her mind like she wants to erase history like this era never began. Well honey you can't do that!! ???

I'm a tad worried. I mean, she only needs five or six "pop" songs on the album. I hope half the album is still written by her. She writes beautiful songs. She just needs to mix it up a bit. But definitely do not change altogether.

Nobody gave MD a chance One Minute, Don't Waste Your Time, and How I Feel have pop written all ova them. But whutevz. I really hope Kelly has some say on the next album, and I hope it just isn't his creation.

And wow, i just notice that Pink and Kelly are very similiar.

I think this is sad and if the next album is a huge success, thats gonna be a slap in the face for Kelly and her songwriting skills which she's telling over and over again, i hope MD doesn't sell only 850,000 as Roger Friedman says in his article but more than that. Sad though.

Still think "How I Feel" could have been a hit, but I'm happy about this- all the negativity was getting too much to take. I'm just thankful that Clive isn't holding it against her and she is willing to move forward. Breakaway 2, please!! In a way, it all fits- "My December" was about a low point in her life and the album sort of represented that- it's symbolic of that and all the disasters that occurred around releasing it also was indicative of a "December." Still, the song "Sober" will endure to become a real classic so good things still came out of it.

Sad though. I don't think it would be a Total slap in the face to her songwriting skills. She knows that she wrote Beacuse of You, and it's one of her biggest hits. But I think it might hurt a little to have her vision miss big success. I don't think Kelly will become a puppet for her next CD, just take a little more direction from Clive. btw, is that Fox News article the only news we've heard for a new album

we also got a little something from Clive: Clive Davis Quashes Clarkson Beef Yesterday afternoon, Clive Davis received the Music Visionary Award at a luncheon for the Music for Youth initiative, and as pop music's reigning arch-duke of divas, was received with reverence, flattery, and, inevitably, rumor-mongering. Enter Kelly Clarkson, the former American Idol turned ingrate turned apologist. Davis, the 75-year-old chairman and CEO of the BMG Label Group, fielded reporters' questions with characteristic aplomb, dismissing ever-so-wryly Clarkson's very public tantrum and disses as non-issues: "Kelly's been an ... important artist from the very beginning, so I'm delighted to take her back on track, and we'll be gettin' to work on her next album real soon." Onward and upward!www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2007/07/clive-davis-kelly-clarkson.php

Only thing, she'll definitely have to drop all the weight she gained for the "My December" edgier era. Is she ready for THAT challenge? The Blond hair will also return.
Avril here she comes, she's taking your spot again. Well, at least she's going to try again.
But what happened to her being so financially set for life and wanting to do "real" music now? If she's so rich why not just leave Clive and start making the music you LOVE your own WAY, independtly? Instead of going back doing something you clearly hate and being controlled all along the way?

MD's biggest downfall was that it didn't have enough variety, as far as tone and theme goes. It's an amazing, artistic album but it's hard to listen to multiple times all the way through. I hope that there is a nice mix of variety on this new one.

WOW! Little fast on the trigger, aren't you, Fresh N Clean? The article was just published this morning, there's been no official announcement about a new album, and already we have a new era thread going. ROFLMBO!!!! I'm not crazy about MD, but even I'm not in that much of a hurry to push it out of the way. Not in a hurry, are you...much!

Instead of going back doing something you clearly hate and being controlled all along the way? For one thing, she's under contract and has to deliver another album. Another is that Clive let her release the album she wanted, don't forget he didn't have to do that so she does owe him a bit- and she always said even before "My December" was released that she would do the album Clive wanted her to do next- so she's not really changing her plans. And I do think that not getting the radio hits she got the last album, she is finding out she liked having that more than she thought. Sometimes you only miss it after it's gone. No matter what she says, I think she is very shocked about the album sales and radio play. She said she laughed at the guy who she says had the nerve to tell her she would only sell around 600,000 copies- but that may not be far off the mark and I think she's been taken by surprise over it.

I guess Kelly's the nu Riahnna. Ah, but this is a good thing. Kelly got her own personal album, us fans got to hear it too and experience it, and next year she'll be all over the charts again! Really, the break from radio has been a good thing, we don't have to worry about overexposure anymore but fans still got what they wanted. And we get more Kelly music sooner than later!

Thank GOD! MD was a disaster! Her label probably threatened her! lol...
She should work with Kara Dioguardi, The Matrix, and some more pop tunesmiths. And keep her writting away from the record.
She should stop trying to be so dark, it began to get a bit annoying? imo...

Why's she doing this? She ended up letting go of her stance. How I Feel could have been hot as well as One Minute and it could be a cult hit. I can't believe she's doing this. . This is such a conspicuous case of selling-out...

I dunno...part of me thinks this is just a semi-amicable comprimise to quickly get done with her current contract with RCA.

If this is really true, i will be really disappointed with Kelly. Its not her fault. Her label can tell her when they want an album released and she HAS to do it. So, yea.

^That is not true. She can refuse to make an album she does not want to make.

There's nothing to say when in 2008 it's planned to be released, does it? Because it could be the end of 2008, which gives them ample time to wrap up the MD era properly.

This is crap. I wanted My December to be a REAL era, not an album plus one single and a half. I'd prefer it if Kelly would soldier on, promoting her album and releasing more singles. Just like Madonna did with American Life and P!nk with Try This. This is sad.

This pisses me off. I thought MD was a great album. Whatever happened to her wanting to prove herself? Pathetic.

Well if it wasn't crystal clear by your inane reasoning, your sig and avatar certainly tell all about your stance on artistry and originality. It's a little sad.

Sadder still is that Stars Go Blind is better than anything on MD.

Its not her fault that MD is being like this. MD can be a hit if her label supports her. Nothing can be successful until your label backs you up.
And i'm sure if this is true (which we arent 100% sure) it will be a great album. Just believe in Kelly.
