Z100, KTU, and Power 105 are getting ready to hunt down listeners and ad bucks - on the Internet. With the radio biz in the dumps, radio titan Clear Channel, which owns all three New York stations, is looking for fans elsewhere. And it's hoping to grab them online starting with Stripped, it's first original online concert series, sources told the Daily News. Rob Thomas, the superstar frontman for rock band Matchbox 20, has agreed to do one of the first Stripped performances to promote his upcoming solo album "Something To Be." The shows are set to air for free on Clear Channel's 1,000 radio station Web sites starting in May, the sources said. Big names like John Legend, Gavin DeGraw, and Jesse McCartney also have signed on. None will receive a penny for their appearances - to be shot live, with no frills. They are banking on the concerts to stoke their record sales. Clear Channel plans to find one national and one local advertiser for each event and is said to be close to inking its first deals. The radio giant declined to comment. Hit hard by competition from iPods and satellite radio, radio stations are being forced to chase listeners where they can find them. "They put this off too long, there are a lot of competing technologies out there," said Guzman & Co. analyst Jake Balzer. Radio companies see big cash online at a time when their own sales are flagging. While the radio biz is set to grow just 2% to 3% this year to $22 billion, Internet ad sales are expected to surge by 30% to $11 billion. Clear Channel recently got serious about the Internet, stealing away online music guru Evan Harrison, who was the brains behind AOL Music. Harrison revamped that music site, with must-see concert series like Sessions at AOL and AOL Music Live. Along with Yahoo Music, AOL has become the most popular music destination on the web. Clear Channel's banking on Harrison to reinvent its Web sites, which now do little more than collect contest entries and rebroadcast radio programing from its stations. Clear Channel has an advantage because it can use its 1,200 radio stations to steer fans to its online events. "Clear Channel is the biggest radio chain and already has a built-in audience," Thomas' manager, Michael Lippman, told The News. But it remains to be seen whether the radio giant can topple AOL Music, which lures nearly 20 million visitors a month. Harrison is already playing hardball. From now on, Clear Channel - which has a reputation for strongarming competitors - will no longer promote the events of AOL and other music sites on its radio stations, sources said.

Lonely No More just debuted at #10 on VH1 Top 20 videos. Pretty impressive.

It's a pretty good video. He should re-think the dancing though My cousin said he was trying to be Shakira with his 'dancing'.

The clips all sound good, though "Lonely No More" is definitely my favorite. "Ever The Same" stands out as another great song with huge hit potential. I really like the ads for hs concert dates! Really cool artwork that incorporates both his project and the city he'll be in.

:o I just heard a clip of "Something To Be". This song is going to be hands down the best song that Rob Thomas has ever sung or perhaps even written. Think of "Push" for intensity, but add a little soul into the mix for an amazing sound.

Wow, thanks for the clips. Ever the Same has a light country sound to it. And All That I Am could be played a weddings. Can't wait to get the whole album. Usually hate to listen to clips, but just had to! Rob's voice is sounding great!

Thank you so much for the clips!! This album sounds amazing. I was on the fence about whether or not I would buy this album, but now I am sure that I'm going to pick it up.

I just listened to the clips for three new songs. I LOVE I Am An Illusion. This is the song that has a steel guitar solo on it by Robert Randolph. I can't wait to hear the whole thing.
And Rob's vocals on All That I Am. Is this Rob Thomas??? I would have never thought it was him if I didn't know it beforehand. Just gorgeous!
Ever The Same - Short clip. Can't really get a feel for this one.
Have not heard Something To Be yet.

I've continued to hear Lonely No More in commercials for Desperate Housewives. That's pretty cool. Wonder if it will affect the song at all considering DH is such a popular show. Also, the MB20 board has a thread with links to an acoustic version of "Lonely No More" and another new song called "Fallen". "Fallen" is not on Something to Be, but on the single. It's probably my least favorite Rob song. But I give him credit for branching out. The title track from Something to be is now up on that same website with the other clips: www.monkeyback.com/RobThomas.html

I'm loving these clips. Lonely No More may end up being my least favorite song on the album.
Can't wait for April 19.

"Something To Be" is blazin! This should be the second single instead of the much more bland "TIHAHB." "Something to Be" sounds very summer too, it sounds like an awesome windows down music blasting song!

Wow! So the promotion kicks in with a vengeance! This is so neat about Rob being on Leno two nights in a row. I thought it was a mistake when I first heard of it, but here it is on the wire. That's a coup. Wonder how that came about. Here's the article: New Rob Thomas Album to Be DualDisc Exclusive Two-Night Leno Stand Set; VH1 Special on Tap; Club Tour Kicks Off April 15th NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/04/2005 -- The forthcoming debut solo album from Melisma/Atlantic recording artist Rob Thomas, "...SOMETHING TO BE," will be available exclusively in the new DualDisc format. Due in stores on April 19th, the eagerly awaited release will feature the full album on the CD side and over 20 minutes of exclusive video material on the DVD side, which will also include all 12 songs in 5.1 multichannel surround sound. The DVD content will feature an "In Session" behind the scenes documentary -- including footage of recording and songwriting sessions for the album -- plus a photo gallery, lyrics, and more. Thomas has an extensive slate of activities on tap to herald the release of "...SOMETHING TO BE." He will make a very rare two-night stand on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" -- performing live on the show on both Monday, April 18th and Tuesday, April 19th. He will also appear on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" on Monday, April 25th. On April 11th, Thomas will be among the stars performing at the VH1 Save The Music benefit concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The show -- which also features Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart, Joss Stone, John Legend, Mariah Carey, and Donna Summer -- will premiere on VH1 on Sunday, April 17th. The video clip for "Lonely No More," the first single from "...SOMETHING TO BE," is currently in XXL rotation on VH1 and has been added to MTV. The video made its world premiere last week on VH1 and had its online premiere on the homepages of both MTV.com and VH1.com. The clip will be upped to Gung Ho rotation (50+ spins per week) on VH1 for two consecutive weeks beginning April 18th. The entire "...SOMETHING TO BE" album can be heard exclusively via VH1.com's "Hear Music First" during the week leading up to its in-store date, while Thomas will also be featured on "Live @ VH1.com" throughout April. In the online world, Thomas has been selected as Yahoo! Music's April Artist of the Month, which will include a performance for "Live @ Launch." The "Lonely No More" single was premiered online via AOL's First Listen program, and Thomas will be performing for Sessions @ AOL. On the wireless front, he has been selected as Sprint's April Artist of the Month. "Lonely No More" has proved to be an immediate smash at pop radio across the country. The track was far and away the #1 most-added track at multiple formats and is only the second track in the history of the Adult Top 40 chart to gain more than 1,000 plays in a single week. The single ranks in the #1 spot in Canada and the #2 spot in the U.S. this week at Adult Top 40/Hot AC, and is #13 at CHR/Pop. In other radio-related news, Thomas will be one of the first artists featured on Clear Channel's recently announced "Stripped" online concert series. The program will be streamed via individual local Clear Channel radio station web sites. The "Stripped" performances will take place in an intimate, studio setting. In addition, Thomas is being featured in a special Infinity Broadcasting "Street Date Live" promotional campaign. Coinciding with the release of "...SOMETHING TO BE," Thomas will embark on his first-ever solo concert tour. Kicking off on April 15th in San Francisco, the special 11-city cross-country itinerary will mark Thomas's first club tour since matchbox twenty's first national trek eight years ago.

Well I think Mariah is going to do around 300k first week, so she'll probably expierence the average 40-60% sales drop and I think Rob will be able to do around 200k so he will be #1 :)

I think the last MB20 album did about 177,000 in its first week (#6). Of course, I think LNM is doing much better on the charts than Disease did. MB20 has never had a #1 album. It would be nice if Rob could.
Some people are posting on the MB20 site that a recent ad on VH1 says that Rob will be doing a Storytellers. I hope this is true because I loved MB20's episode.

From Hits.....
STARLESS SKY: As a dismal first quarter for most shows no signs of improvement despite a slight Easter bump, watchers watching the 8% year-over-year sales decline to date are asking, where have all the big stars gone? True, we’ve had a million-plus debut week from 50 Cent this year, but porers poring over release schedules see little in the way of excitement on the horizon. Indeed, with the Rob Thomas single peaking in the teens on airplay charts, retailers have turned very pessimistic about the album, due 4/19, and are said to be worried it’s going to tank. Eyes are likewise on the upcoming Mariah Carey album, due 4/12, but retailers seem to be more optimistic about the diva’s latest. Stay tuned to see who’s right about what. (4/7a)

No, I don't think it's likely at all she'll be #1 for more than a week. She's still far from her 90's success levels. She'll debut #1 with that 200-300K level of first-week sales, but Rob Thomas I believe will undoubtedly take over the following week upon sales of a similar level, probably a little weaker than Mariah's first-week sales. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Eyes are likewise on the upcoming Mariah Carey album, due 4/12, but retailers seem to be more optimistic about the diva’s latest. Stay tuned to see who’s right about what. (4/7a) I'm not pessimistic here. Look, Gwen Stefani's lead single from her solo debut, "What You Waiting For?" did even worse than "Lonely No More". It tanked barely after it made the Top 20, and didn't even go recurrent. But now look. Her second single has outperformed "What You Waiting For?" and her solo album is even selling better than any No Doubt album besides "Tragic Kingdom". Historically, with the possible exception of the singles from "Mad Season", the second single has outperformed the lead single on matchbox twenty records. "3 A.M" outperformed "Push", ("Long Day" was only a promotional single), while "Unwell" outperformed "Disease". If that's any indication of how Rob Thomas operates on the charts, whatever the next single is, it will go Top 10, which it looks like "Lonely No More" will fail to do. I mean, look around. Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, the latest effort from Britney Spears, ALL their most recent efforts spawned second singles which outperformed their leading singles. "Cry Me A River" bested "Like I Love You", "Dirrty" was essentially a major flop for Christina and "Beautiful" saved her album, and "Toxic" arguably rescued "In The Zone". I guess we'll just have to wait and see ourselves how the album performs on the Billboard 200 its first week out, but I think there's such a "the-sky-is-falling attitude" here, and personally I believe it's still going to receive well because judging by how matchbox twenty have been able to retain themselves at multi-platinum levels indicates to me Rob Thomas has a strong fanbase. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I wonder what retailers' original expectations for Rob's album were. He isn't going to sell 200,000+. To many people he is a new artist. I would be thrilled if Rob could sell 130-150,000 in the first week. Now, radio play will be necessary to maintain sales so we'll just have to wait and see. I haven't even seen the first album review yet. Hopefully, they will be positive.

(4/7a) It is so funny how some people judge success or failure. Lonely No More is doing really well for a first solo single, yet the little article above claims that "retailers" are now worried it will "tank". So funny. The writer probably interviewed one teenage clerk at Sam Goody and wrote his little piece. Now, if the single hadn't been Top 20 at Pop and #2 on HOT AC, I could understand such a pessimistic assessment. It just doesn't compute, IMO. Anyone have an sense of the "buzz" this album is getting in industry circles?

I haven't even seen the first album review yet. Hopefully, they will be positive. Oh, I think he'll sell a little more than that the first week out. Close to 200K I imagine. There's just an intense amount of nervous energy all a sudden. I don't get it. Rob Thomas really ISN'T a new artist to most people. Santana's "Smooth" remains a ubiquitous recurrent smash. Everyone knows that was Rob crooning on that mega-hit. And Rob Thomas may not have been a face on any other artist's hit single quite yet, but a barrage of artists love him because he's a great songwriter you can relate to. Santana, Willie Nelson, Adam Duritz, Mick Jaggar, the list is wide. Respect for him is enormous out there. It's Rob Thomas's lyrical charisma that will maintain the album I believe. I won't go off and immediately say it'll go multi-platinum, but if you look at Thomas and his history, it's contrary to what these pessimistic critics are suddenly saying. I'm sure things looked really scary at the time for "More Than You Think You Are" when it just plunged after a Top 10 debut on the Billboard 200 due to the flop of "Disease". Then, "Unwell" just came out there, helped the album stay in pretty much the same position on the charts for virtually a year, which "Bright Lights" also helped do. I've heard a lot of good things, for instance, about another track from the new album, "This Is How A Heart Breaks". The buzz coming from those who've heard it is louder than their reaction to "Lonely No More". "This Is How A Heart Breaks" could be Thomas' "Cry Me A River", that is, if it is the second single. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

(4/7a) A little off the subject, but whoever wrote this has no clue what they are talking about. The number of brilliant rock acts releasing an album in the next two months is tremendous. Those rock acts probably will push album sales up 3-5% from what they are averaging now. Back to Rob... I like "This Is How A Heart Breaks," but he really need to go with "Ever The Same" or ..."Something To Be" (or maybe "Streetcorner Symphony." I believe that's the one with John Mayer, but I don't know if it'll be good yet because I haven't heard it) "TIHAHB" just won't do well in the summer. And this better debut at #1!
