This is the album I'm most looking forward to this year.. Matchbox Twenty's latest album MTYTYA was great and everything Rob has done for Santana in recent years was excellent.. This could be huge.

this could be one of the year's biggest, very anticipated. I really think Rob could be the next Phil Collins, Don Henley, etc. Male solo artist with lots of classic hits appealing to all audiences. I'm guessing he'll start off with Hot AC formats and hopefully have some songs crossover to POP over summer. I heard he had a concert in early December '04, and everyone gave very good reviews of his new stuff.

I think somebody posted that he and Santana are going to tour together this year.. now that would be one show not to miss.
I agree with the Phil Collins and so comments.. he's deffintly the one that could follow into their footsteps.

Well, I am certainly looking forward to this release...surprise, surprise. Here are the little snippets I've read about the album.
Guest musicians (Rob does all singing and writing)-
Kyle Cook (guitarist Matchbox Twenty) Wendy and Lisa (Prince) Dr Dre's bassist (don't know his name but works on all Dre's hits) John Mayer Carlos Santana (?)
Matt Beck, who was a traveling keyboardist for MB20 in 2003, descibed the parts of the album he has heard as very, very good. Doesn't sound like MB20 but still sounds like Rob (I assume he means the writing style here). Some songs are modern urban/hip-hop, some are Paul Simon sounding, some sound like old Peter Gabriel. Matt said one of his favorite songs was a song called Illusions that sounds like P Funk. He also said that Lonely No More was a standout track because it has one of Rob's catchest hooks. Says its very diverse.
Rob posted on the MB20 message board the other day and said this...i'm coming to the very, very end of my record and can't wait for you to hear it. it's either really good or self-indulgent crap, but i like it.
No official release date. Rumors are March-June 2005.

Hopefully closer to March than June. I don't want urban/hip-hop from him though.

Is "Something to Be" the confirmed title?
Before when visiting Music Millennium, where they have a board where they write forthcoming releases, I heard the tentative title was "So Much For Dancing".

I'm excited to hear this one too. I have started to hear DJs mentioning it the last few weeks, so I know it's getting closer. But someone on the MB20 board posted that she spoke to a DJ in NYC who had very recently spoken with Rob Thomas and he told her it was to drop in June.

Personally I like "So Much For Dancing" as a title better. But then again I have an almost biased like of matchbox twenty, so I'll probably enjoy this either way. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I think a late spring release is a good idea. "Smooth" was released in the spring and had a chart run that lasted well into the winter. If Rob has a successful first single, a second single could carry him through the holiday buying season.

If Rob has a successful first single, a second single could carry him through the holiday buying season. Agreed. Chances are, just like "Unwell" surpassed lead single "Disease" from his group's last release by epic proportions, his second single can very well likely eclipse his first with good timing. But another plus note here is that matchbox twenty historically have been known to chart strong singles during the summer months as well. "Bent" was a spring release, which topped the Pop chart in the summer of 2000, and then, of course, "Unwell" peaked at #3 on the Pop chart in the summer of 2003. On top of that, the dominating run of "Unwell" across the Hot AC format occurred through a bulk of spring/summer of 2003. Rob Thomas is in a good position here. He has the admiration from all sorts of artists across multiple genres and formats. He has a solid reputation behind him as an accomplished, effective songwriter, especially winning the Songwriters Award multiple years in a row. His lyrics are very accessible but he also makes the attempt to not come across as overly simplistic. I have a good feeling Rob Thomas can succeed as a solo artist commerically, and we'll just have to see the effects. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I think him going solo for an album is probably going to generate huge sales, he's got the M20 fans behind him, some Santana fans behind him, respect in the industry and if the first single is anything similar to what he's done in recent years the album will go platinum in less than a month.

His album is due in May.
Matchbox twenty frontman Rob Thomas will release his as-yet-untitled solo debut in May via Atlantic Records. The set features a guest spot by singer/songwriter John Mayer on guitar on an unnamed track, according to Thomas' spokesperson. Other songs tipped to make the cut are "Lonely No More" and "Ever the Same."
The process of writing for a solo project as opposed to a band has been a liberating one, Thomas told Billboard last March. "First of all, it doesn't have to have two guitars, a bass and a drum on every song," he said. "After a while you want to try something different. It's all about not having a framework that you have to fit into. It doesn't have to sound like a band."
The album will feature production by Virgin chairman/CEO Matt Serletic, who has worked regularly with matchbox twenty since its 1996 debut, "Yourself or Someone Like You."
The other members of matchbox have lately been busy with side projects, including guitarist Kyle Cook's the New Left, which self-released its debut EP, "Let Go," in late October.

Thanks for the article, Nick.
Lonely No More was the song that Matt Beck said was among his favorites because of the great hook.

Nice! Two of my favorites! Michelle Branch fans would like to see Rob team up with her. I remember there was a discussion about this on the MBMB (Michelle Branch Message Boards - now deceased... :'(), and the majority said they should join forces.

I remember there was a discussion about this on the MBMB (Michelle Branch Message Boards - now deceased... :'(), and the majority said they should join forces. I remember this old radio interview where Rob talked about Michelle Branch and Santana. I believe he called her a sweetie. I kind of got the impression that Rob had a bit on input on Shaman due to his friendship with Carlos. I think he mentioned that Carlos asked him to do a song on Shaman, but Rob didn't want to try to recreate Smooth and declined. The DJ asked if Rob was jealous since Santana had given Michelle his hat (don't know what this was referring to, though). Rob laughed and said something like "no, cuz he gave me his underwear! They're red and say "Suave". It was a very funny interview. Wish I could find it on the web, but don't know where to look.

pretty funny guy, I'll never forget at one of the concerts a few years ago, when Maroon 5 was opening for Matchbox Twenty, and Maroon 5 had just put out Harded To Breathe and it was stalling on the Hot AC chart in lower 20's. Anyways, Rob said, "that was Maroon 5, and trust me, they are like 40 times better than our band"

According to AllAccess, "Lonely No More" impacts CHR/Pop on 15 February. I imagine the song will show up with an impact date on Hot AC on AllAccess tomorrow.

Can you explain exactly what "impacts" means? And would a new release impact multiple formats on the same date or do they roll it out from one format to another usually. Just curious about the lingo and the inner workings of the radio biz. Thanks! That means one more month til something new from Rob. Cool! Nice Valentine's Day gift for all of us!

Can you explain exactly what "impacts" means? And would a new release impact multiple formats on the same date or do they roll it out from one format to another usually. An "impact" or "adds" date is the date that record labels announce as a focal point for radio stations. It is the record label's target date for the first week of release for a single, and when the record label hopes to see a lot of radio stations adding the song to their playlists. If a lot of stations do that at the same time, the record label can trumpet the huge number of "adds" that the song got. If the song is the week's "most added," (that is, if it gets more adds on a particular format than any other song), then the record label will trumpet that, too, to build hype for the song and encourage other radio stations to join the bandwagon. If you're looking at CHR/Pop, a really big adds week means 50 or more adds (which is still less than 1/2 the panel). That typically means the song is going to be a huge hit. Thirty to 50 adds in the first week is also a very good start. Twenty to 30 adds would be a decent start from which the artist could build momentum (and with his album coming out in May, Rob Thomas will have plenty of time to build that momentum). As for whether songs typically go for adds on different formats at the same time, it depends, but I think they usually don't. Take Avril Lavigne's "Nobody's Home," for example. It went for adds on CHR/Pop on 26 October 2004, and is finally supposed to impact Hot AC this coming Tuesday (I think it took them too long to push the song to Hot AC, but that's just me). Sometimes, you'll see labels pushing a song to CHR/Pop first, and then pushing it on Hot AC after it has made the top-20 on CHR/Pop. For someone like Rob Thomas, who is a Hot AC format artist (or was as part of Matchbox 20), I have to think that they won't wait long to push his lead single to Hot AC. We may even hear "Lonely No More" on Hot AC first. But I don't know. That means one more month til something new from Rob. Cool! Nice Valentine's Day gift for all of us! Yeah, for sure! I can't wait -- and since the single has to get sent to radio a couple of weeks before, we'll probably hear a leak even sooner!
