August 21st. Today's Country Birthdays: Kenny Rogers (1939) 70 years old With 77 charted singles, Kenny Rogers has done it all: music, television, and movies. Kenny formed The First Edition and their first single was his irst T40 single, Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town (1969 #39). Kenny went solo in 1973 but it took three years to have another T40 hit, Love Lifted Me (1976 #19). Kenny's first T10 hit was also his first #1, Lucille (1977 2weeks @#1). Many different performers became duet partners with Kenny. However, singing with Dottie West became a perfect match. Kenny and Dottie became CMA Vocal Duo winners in 1978 & 1979. Every Time two Fols Collide (1978) and What Are We Doin' In Love (1981) are their most famous duets. She grew up watching her hometown evvole into "Music City U.S.A.. Kitty's first single is also her most successful and ner signature song, It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels (1952, 6 weeks @#1). The song was an answer to the Hank Thompson hit, Wild Side Of Life (1952, 15 weeks @#1. (Both songs are sung to the same melody). Another of her most memorable hits was Heartbreak U.S.A. (1961, 4 weeks @#1). Kitty has had two major duet partnes, Red foley and Webb Pierce. With Red Foley, they both reached #1 with One By One (1954). With Webb Pierce, they peaked at #8 with Oh' So Many Years (1957). Overall, Kitty placed 79 singles between 1952-79. Kitty and Johnny Wright (b. 5/13/1914) were married in 1937 and still married after 71 years.

September 1st. Remembering Those Born Today: Boxcar Willie (September 1, 1931 - April 12, 1999) 67 years Lecil Martin was born in Texas and performed as 'Boxcar Willie' starting in 1970. He joined the Grand Old Opry in 1981. He charted highest with Bad News (1982 #36). Boxcar Willie was one of the earilest performers to use televison to sell albums. In the late 1970's, an album of train songs sold millions, thus his first charted song, Train Medley (1980 #95) was a collection of those songs. Column One Records was the independent label for this collection. Lecil died from Leukemia in 1999.
Conway Twitty (September 1, 1933 - June 5, 1993) 59 years old Harold Lloyd Jenkins was born in Mississippi and first appeared on the pop charts. It's Only Make Believe (1958 2 weeks @#1) was his debut and highest pop hit When Conway began to place hits on the country chart (1966) his first single went T20, Guess My Eyes Were Bigger Than My Heart (1966 #18). Conway's first country #1 occured with Next In Line (1968 #1). Loretta Lynn became a duet partner of Conway's in 1971 and they racked up 14 hits. Their first duet, After the Fire Is Gone (1971, 2 weeks @#1) became their biggest duet and earned them both a Grammy for Vocal Duo. He is most famous for the song that would eventually put him the Grammy for entering into their Hall Of Fame, Wild Side Of Live (1952 15 weeks @#1). September 15th. Remembering Those Born Today Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992) 89 years "The King Of Country Music", Roy Acuff & The Smoky Mountain Boys were formed in the 1930's. They joined the Grand Old Opry in 1938. In 1942, Acuff-Rose Publishing Company was founded with Fred Rose. This business duo also foumrd Hickory Records in 1953. In 1987, Roy won a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement. Roy died from heart failure in 1992.
