DeFord is the first black superstar in country music whose career was primarily based on performing on the radio. His recodings did not pan out as his live performances did. DeFord performed on the first program of the Grand Old Opry on WSM in 1925. He was elected to the CMA Hall of Fame in 2005. Professional rodeo rider as a young man, Rex also starred in B-Westerns and narrated many Disney nature films in the 50's to the 70's. He died while being struck by a car in 1999. His son, Rex Allen Jr., also produced singles on the coutnry chart.
