It seems that Kelly may have two songs in the Top 10... so that brings me to the question. How many artists have had multiple hits in the top ten at the same time? And what were the songs?

The Beatles: "Can't Buy Me Love", "Twist And Shout", "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "Please Please Me"
Of course, that was several years before R&R existed.Β ;)
On the R&R pop chart, the Bee Gees replaced themselves at #1 in 1978, as "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" were simultaneous top tens.

Artists with two songs in the Top 10 at the same time:
PPW Era
1994: Ace Of Base (The Sign, Don't Turn Around) 1994: Boyz II Men (I'll Make Love To You, On Bended Knee) 1995: Mariah Carey (Fantasy, One Sweet Day) 1996: Alanis Morissette (Ironic, You Learn) 1996: Alanis Morissette (You Learn, Head Over Feet) 2001: Shaggy (It Wasn't Me, Angel) 2002: Nelly (Hot In Herre, Dilemma) 2002: Avril Lavigne (Complicated, Sk8er Boi) 2003: Beyonce (Crazy In Love, Baby Boy) 2004: OutKast (Hey Ya, The Way You Move) 2004: Usher (Yeah, Burn) 2004: Usher (Burn, Confessions Pt. 2)
The following two artists made the list with an asterick- the were merely featured on one of the tracks.
2002: Ja Rule (Always On Time, Ain't It Funny- Jennifer Lopez) 2002: Ashanti (What's Luv- Fat Joe, Foolish)
There is a big gap between 1996-2001 where this never happened. The closest any artist came was the Goo Goo Dolls, who on 12/4/1998, occupied the # 10 and # 11 positions with Iris and Slide. The following week, Iris dropped out of the Top 10 (after a record 28 week stay), and Slide entered the Top 10 (for the first of 20 weeks).

i really wouldn't count ja rule and ashanti. they were just featured, and in my books, that does not count.
by the way, this thread is just about the POP chart, right? did burn and confessions part 2 really were in the top 10 @ the same time at one point? i cna't remember this happening. i could be totally wrong.

The ones I listed are all from the Pop chart. And yes, "Burn" and "Confessions Pt. 2" were indeed in the Top 10 simeltaneously, for 3 weeks starting on 7/23/2004.

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway & Since U Been Gone And I still contend there should be an ** next to the Outkast one. They were two "solo" artists. Ugh...

I'm sure Whitney did it with two of her Bodyguard singles.

what about My Boo & If I Ain't Got you, shouldnt that be there with an asterick?

No, at least not for the pop chart. "If I Ain't Got You" dropped out of the top 10 on the 9/10/04 chart (so it's last chart in the top 10 was 9/3/04) and "My Boo" didn't enter the top 10 until the 10/22/04 chart, so there were 6 weeks in between.

what the heck happened between 1996 and 2001? no artist was able to produce 2 top 10 hits at the same time. that's wacky. and i'm surprised eminem is not on this list. i do realize that he is hip hop artist first and foremost, but he did have some pop hits.

Eminem wasn't really big on pop until 'Without Me' made it to #1. I think that was also his first Top 10 hit. After that, he's had back-to-back Top 10s.

There were so many great songs out during this time and music was going through a lot of change that radio wasn't such a bi*ch about sticking to the same playlists and the same artists like it is now. But I couldn't be any happier for Kelly's success! :)

I didn't believe this at first, so I checked on allmusic.com, and you're right, the closest Eminem came to top 10 before "Without Me" was "The Real Slim Shady," which peaked at #13 on Top 40 Mainstream :o I guess I overestimated how well his earlier hits did on Pop when they were first released in part because of the strong recurrent play they get.

Eminem wasn't really big on pop until 'Without Me' made it to #1. I think that was also his first Top 10 hit. After that, he's had back-to-back Top 10s. Part of the reason for this is that back then, pop stations stayed away from a lot of rap tunes like Eminem. However, for an artist with, at the time, unpopular music, he did do quite well. Both My Name Is and Forget About Dre made the top 30 on pop radio and later Stan did as well. By today's standards, that is sub-Eminem, but for the late 90s/early 00s that was VERY good for an RHY song. To give some perspective, songs by Jay-Z and DMX at the time, who arguably had pop-friendly tunes, couldn't crack the top 30 on pop radio. Although, "Party Up (Up In Here)" did spend like 15-16 weeks in the top 40 without cracking the top 30.

I think that's good, in that the whole upper reaches of the chart weren't hogged by a handful of artists, and a variety of songs could get through. Back then, stations also seemed to be better at dropping older singles from heavy rotation when a new one was released; not like when stations refused to let go of "Breakaway" even a month after SUBG came out.

I believe that the Bee Gess had THREE songs in the top 10 at once--'How Deep Is Your Love?', 'Stayin' Alive' & 'Night Fever'.
'HDIYL' broke the all-time record by spending NINETEEN weeks in the top ten, breaking the record set by 1959's #1 single, and the biggest single ever by a male vocalist, Bobby Darin's 'Mack The Knife'.

so, did Kelly manage to pull it off??? Yep. Breakaway held on to the #10 spot up until this morning, well past the "official" update Sunday night.

One HUGE difference between the 1996-2001 era and today's CHR/Pop radio is that the format had not been commandeered and smothered by lots of rhythmic artists and a deluge of lightweights, especially females and assorted boy bands, as has been the case the past several years.
1997 saw an explosion of new alternative-leaning rock, thanks to folks such as the Wallflowers, and the format was still a mass appeal format, which it certainly is not these days.
Consequently labels didn't have to release the next single from any given artist until their current hit had faded away.
Also, the fact that the format has also been smothered by a handful of producers and a healthy chunk of performers who are collaborating with each other ad in numerous instances, hasn't been good for the format.
Add to that the fact that the format has become a producer-dominated format, as opposed to a songwriter driven format, and that's another problem.
Most of the best songwriters these days are no longer welcome at the CHR/Pop format, with tunemeisters such as Sheryl Crow, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen & John Mellencamp leading the way, along with too many pop/AC artists to list.
