Despite still having a no recurrent rule, why is it once in a while there are AT40 CHR version weeks with only 1 debut (includes this weekend's Feb. 9, 2008 AT40 CHR version)? A few times there were 1 debut AT40 weeks 2 weeks in a row and for 3 weeks in a row in March 2006 there were 3 weeks in a row of 1 debut AT40 charts. Is this the same sometimes for the AT40 Hot AC version? Could it be tight playlists or something or too much ranking of recurrents still on the AT40 chart? Why couldn't AT40 with Ryan Seacrest use the Top 40 CHR R&R chart with a recurrent rule or the Mediabase CHR chart with a recurrent rule and not the Mediabase CHR chart with no recurrent rule as a source? Opinions welcome...

Because the Top 40 with Ryan is only the Top 40. The chart actually extends down. 40 is an arbitrary number. It's the same reason why, in any given week, the Top 20 may have only one song enter or two or even three. That's the same with the Top 40. They don't pick and choose which songs will fall out so they can make room for 2 or 3 news ones. Recurrent rule or not, sometimes the Top 40 will contain the same 40 songs as the week before, or 39 of the same songs, and so on. Just take a second and separate the Top 20 from the chart for the last few weeks and pretend it's an AT20 chart and consider any song that enters the Top 20 a "debut". See how that changes?

Opinions welcome... Pretty sure the Mediabase and BDS CHR charts with recurrents included don't have that many Top 40 debuts (cause recurrents stay around for so long)...also thinkin Seacrest uses the chart w/o recurrent rules cause the songs are "safer" for most CHRs to play...if AT40 broadcast the Mediabase or BDS Top 40 using the recurrent rule, it'd be playin songs that only a small fraction of its CHR stations were playin' (at least durin the daytime hours), and listeners in both large and more conservative markets might change the station People in the industry (and big music fans like the ones on this board) are excited to see lots of new songs enter the Top 40, but your average CHR listener in many markets (esp. big markets) doesn't wanna hear lots of unfamiliar songs durin the first hour and a half of a countdown show, just cause they can't sing along, listen to it with their friends, etc. (especially cause all these unfamiliar songs would be played back to back) This is all my opinion, but pretty sure it's true in general...

Hmmm, you know, I've never thought about it like that where the first hour or so would be filled with unfamiliar songs. And it's funny but back when I listened to Casey's Top 40 religiously every Saturday morning, I'd always be so excited for the first hour most of all. Of course it was all fun to listen to but during the first hour is when the debuts and usually the bigger movers were. It was exciting as a chart watcher!
