I believe one reason CHR/Pop stations don't want to be classified as Rhythmic is because of advertising revenue. Advertisers may still believe that Pop is more of a mass appeal format than Rhythmic, so they may be more willing to spend their money at Pop. That's a great point! It all comes back to the money. |

In that case, the advertising theory can't be right - so in that case, why is MEDIABASE so reluctant to classify CHR/Pop stations that only play one or two rock songs (I really don't think Avril Lavigne "Girlfriend" counts) and refuse to play Daughtry or Nickelback, as Rhythmic (where they should be) Back to that double standard question - why does a station have to be 100% rhythmic for Mediabase to classify it as "Rhythmic," while Hot AC stations like WKRQ can play "Summer Love" 73x a week, Sean Kingston 60x a week, and Timberlake's "Lovestoned" 37x a week AND STILL BE CLASSIFIED AS HOT AC? The only song keeping KIIS from being 100% rhythmic is "Makes Me Wonder" by Maroon 5, which is sort of a rhythmic song anyways I wonder if record companies pressured Mediabase to turn the CHR/Pop into the "CHR/Teen" chart so that they could brag about how many #1 hits J. T. or Avril Lavigne has (when many of these "hits" as I mentioned above, don't deserve to be #1, if you take the whole mass-appeal pop/rock radio spectrum into account) |

I wouldn't be surprised to see WKRQ reclassified to CHR soon. You have to realize that station classification is not an exact science though, and when stations evolve over time, it takes a long time for them to switch panels. Mediabase strives for consistency, and they don't want to be switching stations back and forth too much because it wreaks havoc on the charts.

Back to my theory about Clear Channel wanting CHR to lean teen/rhythmic (by classifying stations such as KIIS as CHR/Pop and stations such as WKRQ as Hot AC) so that Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Fergie, Avril will have a million #1 hits!! |

Clear Channel doesn't control Mediabase though. I think Mediabase would have a lot fewer subscribers if people thought Clear Channel was manipulating it.
Also remember that Billboard classifies these stations the same way. KIIS and WKQI are on Billboard's CHR panel also.

I know CC owns it, but that doesn't mean they manipulate it to their advantage. Mediabase has to be unbiased in order for people to take them seriously.

The new KBIG (104.3 MY FM) is much more "top 40" sounding than KIIS FM... KIIS should go to the CHR/Rhythmic panel... and the new KBIG should be moved to the CHR/Pop panel...
