I think this board needs a good rant/conversation, so I'm going to vent about the lousy state of the charts. This is all an opinion thing, so let's keep the blasting out and try to have a decent convo.
It seems the charts were at their beatst from late summer/fall 2003 until summer 2004. There was a good variety of hits, and the quality of the music that was out was higher than usual IMO. I look at the charts from, say, November 2003, and think "Damn, the charts now really suck compared to this." The quality has gone down, way down. Songs that deserve to be big hits are not taking off. It just sucks.
Take a look at the bottom half of the Top 10. Soldier has got to be one of the most ridiculous attempts at being ghetto I've ever heard. None of the lyrics even make sense...and I wonder what "known to carry big things" means?? Mockingbird is one of Eminem's most boring songs yet, and Rich Girl is ridiculous. Sorry, but I don't particularly want to hear a song about Gwen's Harajuku Girls and other random crap...and it has a huge bullet. Great.
Now check out the songs challenging for the Top 10 and eventually 5. Caught Up I can live with...but Disco Inferno has none of the energy and fun that made any of 50's other songs big. Candy Shop should be in its place. Obsession is bland as hell, and there is no reason for it to be doing so well. How We Do...apparently how he does it is boring and washed-up. Nothing we haven't heard before. An overhyped, overrated joke. Drop It Like It's Hot is about 10 times better than this Signs song. Only U is a piece of crap as well.
Now look at the songs struggling to keep it going while this whack ish builds steam. Karma should do every bit as well as If I Ain't Got You. So it's not taking off because...? We had to deal with She Will Be Loved being #1 for weeks, but Sunday Morning can barely make the Top 20. Like Toy Soldiers, Let Me Go, Mr. Brightside, Cold, Collide, Karma, Sunday Morning...these should be in or challenging for the Top 10! All great songs that can do well if given the chance, but NOOOOPE, let's force-feed the listeners total crap!
There's no reason why some of these songs are blowing up, and the good ones are suffering. I know that some of y'all have been hating on the charts for a while, but this is an all-time low. It's just ugly.

I personally think the chart is the best it's been this decade so far, but I'm not a huge pop radio fan in general so that's not saying I adore everything on pop radio.

We could ask Edf85 or reception... LOL!The pop chart always sucks. On any given week, at least about 60% of the top 50 is garunteed to be either 1) boring, 2) overplayed or 3) just plain crappy.

I think the songs on the chart "suck" IMO, however the chart itself is pretty decent.

The chart has always been sucky in general, unless you generally like music that is (a) formulaic, (b) insipid, or (c) overplayed.
The last time I liked a decent number of pop hits was probably in the late summer of '01. And before that, well, I think 1997 was a pretty good year in general. There seemed to be much more variety back then and music was generally better.
Oh well. If you're looking for good music, look for it yourself and ignore ANY chart.

The CHR/Pop Chart has sucked since 1992..
I miss the Golden Age of CHR.. (I really do)
There seems to be a pretty decent variety on the Current charts though.. It seemed like last year that Hip Hop was dominating, now we are seeing more rock and just flat-out pop...

I totally disagree. I think the charts are awesome right now, compared to the last few years.

It's just ugly. I pretty much agree with you. The pop chart is pretty crappy. A lot of songs near theΒ top of the pop chart have no business being there. Including the current #1, Ciara. That fact that 1,2 Step is a #1 song makes me cringe

i think it's just the state of where music is right now...
people want those trendy tunes....cause, well, the pop world is all about what's hip, not, and new....
i long for the days of lauryn, jewel, india arie, 112, dru hill, toni, tlc (the "creep" era), blackstreet - back when music was good, sung well, and had some depth to it.......(okay, dru hill maybe wasn't the best example.
(oh, and i do realize some of the artists I mentioned aren't CHR, i'm just making a general point)

I'm 95% happy with the music charts right now except for a few flaws.Β Only thing I want is for radio to give Lindsay (Lohan) a chance on radio because "Over" is currently #44 with a negative bullet of (-)10 :(...peaking @ #41, not even cracking the top 40!

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend of mine recently. She was talking about how pop music sucks right now and how "our" pop music was so much better. I pointed out to her that pretty much every generation since the beginning of time has said that. She said, "yeah, but this time it's true!"

I think they're fairly well now. The worst was probably late 2002 or 2003 or something but now I'm satisfied with the charts due to variety and stuff .It's not too overrun with hip-hop nor is it too overrun with rock or light pop so it's all good. It's also cool that the charts aren't too predictible. I certainly didn't see Mario hitting #1 with that song... as unexciting as it is.

The chart is ok to me right now. Mario and Ciara need to drop. But Green Day, Kelly, and Gwen being top 10 is refreshing. Rob Thomas is doing well. I am hoping that ONE of my top 3 songs of the week will become a top 30 pop hit (Keane, Jet, or Killers) To me, all of them should be top 20, but this is trashy pop radio. If one of them makes top 30, I will be satisfied.

I'm ok with the chart right now, I just miss the variety that used to be on the pop chart. It seems every second song played on Pop sounds EXACTLY the same. I miss the days when you would hear a techno/dance song after a pretty hard alt song back in the 90s. Now its basically hip hop after hip hop, with an alt here and there and a rock/pop track once an hour usually performed by a teenage white girl. You hear aspects of new music here and there in the last few years, like Soca (Turn Me On), Reggaeton (Oye Mi Canto), and Electronica (anything lately by Madonna), but it still sounds remotely the same as anything else. At least when the boy bands and girl bands (which of course I didn't truly accept) were popular back in the late 90s, they worked their asses off promoting and going on tour. Their dance routines and stage shows were amazing compared to the hoe-downs and mic-in-hand-with-band-behind, boring appearances that have captivated the scene recently with Ashlee, Hilary, and Lindsay (I do agree Kelly and Avril are pretty talented, both can sing and write, and the latter can play an instrument). No talent is specifically special in any way anymore, it all seems the same. Its just: get a good producer now with a nice beat and rhythm and hope it charts high, whether pop, rock, hiphop, whatever. Nothings promoted, tours suck, its just all bland. I'm not saying the music back then was great either, but it seemed a lot more hard work was put into music, and artists now are more into large paychecks from one-hit wonders. Touring and multiple guest appearances on TV are just tiring and useless from an artist standpoint now. Maybe this is why bad songs do good and good songs do badΒ

I agree with this. I did like the pop explosion of the late 90s, but I always had it in my head that they were not really talented, that I wanted musicians to do better, etc... But now...I am almost aching for the days of boybands and people like Britney/Christina. At least some EFFORT was put into their performances. Ashlee stands around screaming in a voice that does not even resemble singing...Lindsay does the same thing except she lips. I was forced to sit through Hoobastank, painfully offkey and bland, standing while singing their generic pop hit. It seems like we are left with people who are NOT musically talented...yet are not great performers either. They *seem* to be more credible because they happen to "cowrite" a track or two...but really, if you cannot perform, and you cannot sing, and you cannot play instruments...what the HELL are you doing on a stage?
-edit to say that I am sure Hooba does have some musical talent...just that their songs sound incredibly generic to me and their live performances embarassingly bad and boring.

Major ditto right there. I'm glad that younger people are listening to music of more substance now (all I had when I was 9-10 years old was Spice Girls/Britney/etc). However, the new music is every bit as artificial as the bubblegum of 8 years ago was. In fact, it's probably even more artificial because they are actually trying to look legit, but clearly aren't. It's bubblegum with a hard rock candy coating. Oh well. heh

Lindsay does the same thing except she lips. people will never get over Good Morning America (to see her live I suggest "Sessions@AOL!")
