I certainly don't disagree with that music4aw, but it doesn't take away from the fact that I still think Kelly is a great writer and I hope that she'll have writing input on the new album. :)

There's no reason why she shouldn't. Besides, singers make more money these days from touring and having their names on their tunes as songwriters than they do from the actual album and single sales. The record companies rake in most of an album's profit. Kelly is capable of writing really good lyrics. Do you know if she also writes the music for her songs? Do you know if she ever did any arranging? (I ask because I don't know the answers.)

She's stated that she writes the melody to her songs when she's writing the lyric's. I don't remember her ever mentioning arranging but you never know.

Doesn't Ace Young go around saying he wrote the chorus to that song? I know because I've heard him say it. I would love to hear the demo before they got their hands on it and see how much imput they really had on it. That is what makes me mad about some of these singers- they add bits then slap their writing credit on it. Though to be fair, Elvis did that, too so it's been around forever. Unless I see these artists name on the writing credit and their name alone with no one else, I don't think of them as songwriters because it's too slippery a slope. I never thought of Janet Jackson as a songwriter until I saw she wrote "Black Cat" all by herself.

I never thought of Janet Jackson as a songwriter until I saw she wrote "Black Cat" all by herself. Ace and Chris did the chorus of INO (which IMO is the strongest part of the song) and they never hid that fact . There was an interview with Mark before where he said himself that the chorus is what Chris and Ace did. The chorus before that was the "let it out, let it out" line and the producers told them that it was not strong enough.

Anybody else think Kelly would sound fantastic singing something similar to Paramore's style? I would love that personally.
Of course, I love everything she does. ;)

Aren't songwriting credits listed in orer of who did the most work? So even if there is more than one writer listed, as long as the artist's name is near the beginning, you know they significantly contributed, as opposed to being at the end of a long list of writers, which shows a lesser participation overall.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, can someone explain to me the difference between the "melody" and "music?" Maybe provide an example.
Thanks guys.

The melody is the notes the singer sings (the right hand on a piano as it were), the music is the chords/notes that go behind that (the left hand of the piano) and accompany the melody.

Of course, I love everything she does. ;) I know this is OT but, is that a good album? I heard a song and liked it, and I love the lead singer, I have read articles and she is a spicy, feisty little thing! Wish more girls in music were like her! Hmm...that is a good question. When she sings songs in concert and they have different arrangements, like Beautiful Disaster, does she have an imput or is that the music director? The more I hear of this album, the more interesed and intrigued I become. I am not really impressed with the people she is working with, but i am always impressed with what Kelly comes up with next, so I definitely am curious.

Riot is probably my favorite pop/rock album of last year, although it's a little one-dimensional. But I was listening to "When it Rains" and "Hallelujah" yesterday and it just occurred to me how good Kelly would sound singing either song. It's just a young, fresh and fun sound. Very different from Breakaway but still in the same genre. And I agree with the suggestion that a Hayley/Kelly duet would be FIRE!

Maybe she does do some arranging because she's said in concert a lot of times, starting with the Independent Tour, that she didn't like the arrangement of BD on Thankful and had wanted it stripped down, and that's why she did it that way on tour.

So I think she is involved to some extent in the arrangements.

I thought I'd post the following just for fun and more info, since we're talking about whether or not Kelly has arranged any of her music.
The American Federation of Musicians defines arranging as "the art of preparing and adapting an already written composition for presentation in other than its original form. An arrangement may include reharmonization, paraphrasing, and/or development of a composition, so that it fully represents the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic structure." Orchestration differs in that it is only adapting music for an orchestra or musical ensemble while arranging "involves adding compositional techniques, such as new thematic material for introductions, transitions, or modulations, and endings...Arranging is the art of giving an existing melody musical variety."

Ok, I have read conflicting things on this. Will she have an album by the end of the year? Has a credible source confirmed a plan?

Nothing has been confirmed, but I'm pretty sure she herself had said that album will be released by the end of the year. Obviously things change all the time, but I have a feeling that the label wants something from her as well.

Thanks for the info Krhazy!
And to Focus and Pyrates, thanks for clearing that up about arrangements. I thought that I had heard/read that Kelly talked about BD and stripping it down, and also about SUBG. I got confused though when Focus and Music4aw were talking about it! And also, how different was her cover of Up To Mountain? I must confess I have never listened to Patti Griffith, so I don't know what the original sounds like! I would love to sit in on a recording session with Kelly that's for sure. The more I think about things, the more talented I realize she is. This album BETTER come out in the fourth quarter. I think it will hopefully, it sounds like things are progressing pretty nicely though with all the info on the 3/4 recorded songs already.

Nice photo of Kelly on that cover. What does it mean that she's fighting "for her life?"

I just posted the cover because I thought it was cool that Kelly's Blender cover was included in AOL Music's Sexy Celebrity Magazine Covers. It really had nothing to do with old news. :) Sorry for the confusion.
