You're right neally, i remember her saying that RCA expected Breakaway to only sell 600,000 and she went on to say that she was well aware that My December would probably not reach anywhere near the level of success that Breakaway achieved. I believe it was in either Blender or Elle or one of the early interviews she did when MD came out. Not that any of this matters anymore, as i'm sure we're all looking to the future and to a great fourth album. That's what I remember as well.

I just found the blender article from August 2007. Re-reading the article almost a year after all the 'My December' drama provided quite a different prism through which to view this past ear. I have selected just a few paragraphs from this rather interesting and lengthy article:

I love the word "uber."
And this album will be huge. I can smell it already.

This is going to be Breakaway Part II. I can smell huge success for this album, especially with Ryan Tedder behind some of the writing.

She will be. I wouldn't really call "My December" a flop though. Platinum is successful. "Never Again" went top 10 on the hot 100. Yes, she should have had a second single (Which, with the right promo, would've gone top 10 as well), but Clive was stubborn, and unreasonable.

I contacted "Chaz".
Hey There, Thanks for stopping by my page! I'm in the process of having a meeting with her A&R and other representative to get this song and "Walk Again" on her next album! Hey her fans can have a major impact on this process so feel free to invite friends on my page to check out these songs and leave me "Comments" so when I have her "people" check out the response to the songs they will be aware of the power of fan loyalty!! To put it to you this way! I JUST posted the song yesterday and TODAY I have over 600 plays of THAT song!! Keep it coming and tell your friends that THEY can have the power to help with the next songs on her record!!! Thanks Again, Chaz ----------------- Original Message ----------------- From: ..! jordan.. Date: Jun 21, 2008 12:00 PM

Even though I really, really do not like 'Love Like You've Never Been Hurt', I very much like the second song 'Walk Again'. The latter song is an acoustic, intimate lullably, which Kelly's rich vocals would sound sooooooooo good on (hello, 'Be Still' !). I would rate the demo to 'Walk Again' as a B-/C+ at present. In fairness to the former song (the demo of which is a big ol D to me), it is quite possible with a different arrangement (and possibly a few lyrical changes, lol), that it could be maybe workable, IMO, but nevertheless is very unimpressive. I wonder if this "Chaz" person has received links to KCE or PULSE to see the overwhelming negative feedback about the former song, lol.... Here is that myspace link which has both songs, in case anyone needs it again: profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=88425778Kelly's expression are pretty da*n funny, especially in the candids. She looks happy, healthy, sunned, and hopefully has been some good R&R in between the studio recordings. As long as she is happy, I am so happy for her in this stage of her career. Whew.....these little tidbits of information are just medicating me enough from going through some majour withdrawal

it is quite possible with a different arrangement (and possibly a few lyrical changes, lol), that it could be maybe workable, IMO, If by 'lyrical changes' you mean 'rewrite the whole song', then yeah, it is workable. But in my opinion, both of these songs are lyrically atrocious. They are little more than an assimilation (with little cohesion) of the most commonly used phrases in music ('lying next to you', 'see it in your eyes'). They lack any originality. He stretches for a clever play with words in the chorus of Walk Again but it sounds forced and doesn't flow well lyrically with the verses. For the love of all that is good, Kelly had better run, not walk, as far away as she can from these two songs. To go from Sober (or heck, Never Again) to this garbage would be a major downgrade.

Don't a lot of artists take songs that other people have written, keep the progression and some other production elements, but completely re-write the melody and lyrics? I can definitely see that working with this song. The song itself is actually pretty, and I'm sure Kelly could do something great with it.

If it is anything I have learned in life at all it is DO NOT JUDGE ON EARLY ROUGH DEMOS. I know you were being sarcastic when you said "if you mean rewrite the entire song" but some rough demos actually do that. THey can change sooooooo much and something that sounded like shit can magically become something brilliant.

^awesome, she always looks so good in candid pictures. couldn't have said it better! Her shirt looks like it is going to bust open! Ha! Thanks for that link again Neally. I haven't listened to the demos because I don't like to jump to conclusions on this recording stuff. The end result is really never the same as the speculations that surround it before hand. Kelly always gives quality material, IMO anyway, so I try not to be negative, or get my hopes up either. I am going to listen, just not say anything about them!

Another Idol Loser Dropped Like A Pauly Shore Sitcomwww.antimusic.com/news/08/june/24Another_Idol_Loser_Dropped_Like_A_Pauly_Shore_Sitcom.shtmlRuben Studdard released three albums before getting dropped. Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee got a year and a half on their post Idol contracts before being let go. Now 2007 American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis has been cast away by Arista, less than a year after they announced signing him. How long will Jive give David Archuleta to find a niche? Six months? Lewis claims that he never wanted to sign to a major in the first place (I mean, who goes on American Idol wanting corporate assistance in becoming rich and famous?), but whether it's a sign that execs aren't going to suffer some "creative control" fool following Kelly Clarkson's My December, or that one shot is all you get in the current marketplace, news like this will probably make next year's contestants even more complacent about actually winning the competition. ---------------- And some you folks wonder why someone like me wishes we could look forward to the new era instead of back at MD? Having Kelly's name associated in any way with AI losers is just sickening. >:( :o :'(

I have selected just a few paragraphs from this rather interesting and lengthy article: I have to apologize, I had read that entirely wrong when I read it at the time and it had stayed with me. Actually, I'm thrilled she was talking about "Breakaway"- it would have been embarrassing if she had said that about "My December" and it actually came true and they were right. Plus, the way I remembered it, I was holding it a bit against her even though I love her to death- now that I see I was completely wrong- the little blemish (why didn't begin to compare to how much I liked her) - it now can be erased. I'm glad I was corrected on this. Thanks.

All signs seem to point to album 4 being big. It sounds like Kelly will have the label support and some potentially very big hits. I expect Kelly to be all over the radio again, and for most people (not just her die hard fans) to continue their talk of how successful she is and how much they love her.
But I think, despite less than deserving record sales (which were never terrible, particularly overseas), My December will play a big part in really furthering Kelly's career. While a few critics destined the album for failure, most people will remember that Kelly is more than just a fantastic singer. She is a writer, she is experimental, she is original, she is fierce, she is genuine, she is intelligent, she is steadfast, she has more personality than anyone ever imagined, she is legitimate, and she is an artist. I can just imagine all the skeptics holding in their vomit as they saw little Miss Texan sing the sappy winning ballad on the manufactured American Idol. Many of those critics would be surprised by the personality and spunk that Kelly demonstrated on Breakaway, but could still (with less confidence) point to the manufactured sound that big name songwriters helped her produce. But with that third charm, My December, it was clear that Kelly Clarkson was not the manufactured "sing the pretty songs we give you" kinda gal. She is so much more than a strong singer, much more than the puppet child of the bubblegum machine, and I don't think people will ever forget it. She has separated herself from all other Idol alums, and demonstrated a sense of creativity and legitimacy absent from most current pop artists. Her statement of independence, artistry, and personality, more than anything else, is what defined the My December era, and I think that will contribute more to her success than another hit CD would have. Kelly already proved that she can have hits with Breakaway; and now she has proven that she can make a truly personable, heart-breaking, and creative album that would be embraced by her fans.
My December, IMO, was a step in the right direction, and is a move that will help Kelly's career and the future success of her next album... and the many more to come. More exciting times lie ahead...
