I was thinking, when Green Day hit #1 on CHR/Pop, they also had #1 on five other formats and it got me wondering, how often does it happen that CHR/Pop shares a #1 with even one other of those other five formats? Rock songs usually top the Rock, Alternative and Active Rock charts first before even crossing over to CHR/Pop. Triple A songs usually peak faster and if they even crossover to CHR/Pop, it takes a while and Hot AC songs catch on longer than they do at CHR/Pop. It really puts it into perspective how amazing Green Day's record really is. Not only to share #1 at the same time at Active Rock and CHR/Pop, for example, but at Active Rock AND Hot AC or Triple A and Hot AC. So when was the last time CHR/Pop shared a #1 at the same time with the other five formats?

I know "She Will Be Loved" was #1 on Pop and Hot AC at the same time. I couldn't tell you about the other formats.
Come on, Country and Christian! If everything else under the sun can go #1 on Pop, then why not these :) .

Before that, "One Sweet Day" by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey had 5 formats (Urban AC, Pop, Rhythmic, and two I can't recall)

I mean at the same time. I'm sure it's quite common that a song can top CHR and another chart but probably weeks or months apart.

Mario did hit #1 with 'LMLY' simultaneously at CHR/Pop, CHR/Rhythmic & Urban, at least in R&R.

Since CHR/Pop and AC can't play the same music anymore, it made sense that a rock/alternative song would have accomplished what Green Day.
Hitting #1 at SIX formats is astonishing, to put it bluntly, but an exceptional accomplishment.

yeah, it'll never happen. Even if a Pop hit does eventually become an AC hit, it takes months for the latter to pick up on it. Was AC radio so slow back in the days when Celine, etc. could have simultaneous chartoppers on those 2 formats?

MHWGO I'm sure was #1 on Pop/AC at the same time. It was, for 8 weeks. Also in 1998, "Truly Madly Deeply" did it for the week of 4/10/1998. And in 1999, "I Want It That Way" did it on 7/23/1999.

When CHR/Pop playlists were much better balanced and less overloaded with rhythmic music, as was the case during the eighties and the early nineties, I'm sure that there were far more songs which hit #1 @ both Top 40 & AC almost simultaneously.
Artists which immediately come to mind would include George Michael, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins/Genesis, Roxette, Wilson Phillips & Bruce Hornsby.
Since Celine hit #1 with MYWGO, hardly anybody's done it since, and it will undoubtedly be awhile before it happens again.

I think the reason Pop and AC no longer share # 1's at the same time has less to do with Pop's playlists than the fact that AC no longer plays current music. AC's idea of a "current" song is something like "Breakaway", which is several months old. Pop and AC have shared a couple of # 1's in recent years ("Beautiful" and "A Thousand Miles"), but they hit # 1 on AC months after doing so on Pop.

To further delve into the example of "Breakaway," that song went for adds on Pop, Hot AC, and AC at the same time last summer, but did not debut on the AC chart until its 9th week on the Pop chart. It was #20 on the AC chart when it hit #1 on Pop, and by the time it hit #1 on AC more than 4 months later, Kelly's next single was #2 on Pop(a couple of weeks later, she became the first artist to top both charts simultaneously with two different songs). If that doesn't illustrate the snail-like pace at which AC picks up current songs, I don't know what will.

That's because today's AC radio is mostly concerned with playing "familiar" music, hence the heavy focus on recurrents and older music and the tendency to add "new" songs only after they've been out for a good long time.

Actually, the fact the the CHR/Pop and AC formats are so far apart in terms of targeted demographic audience is the main reason why breaking a single at both formats simultaneoulsy is a thing of the past.
It happned lots of times during the eighties and nineties, when both formats could play the same music, before the CHR/Pop took a dramatic lurch towards the rhythmic side.
Most of the artists I mentioned earlier in this thread had no problem being serviced to AC & CHR/Pop simultaneously, you can certainly add Daryl Hall & John Oates to that list, as well as Taylor Dayne, Huey Lewis & The News, Tina Turner & LOTS of other artists.

The six formats was a R&R record. Before that, "One Sweet Day" by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey had 5 formats (Urban AC, Pop, Rhythmic, and two I can't recall) I know that it hit #1 on the AC chart. I would imagine the remaining format would be either Hot AC or Urban, most likely the latter, since Boyz II Men sang on it.

CHR/Pop will never return to it's glory days until it quits pursuing the same 12-24 audience that CHR/Rhythmic stations (at least those owned by Emmis, such as KPWR and WPLJ) have been focused on for several years.
CHR/Pop hasn't been a songwriter-driven (or song-driven) format for several years now.

CHR/Pop will never return to it's glory days until it quits pursuing the same 12-24 audience that CHR/Rhythmic stations (at least those owned by Emmis, such as KPWR and WPLJ) have been focused on for several years. "Glory days" is all relative. Pop radio still has a lot of listeners, and, though not performing as it has before in terms of ratings, in still a major force in radio. Artists like Kelly Clarkson would be nowhere near her popularity now if not for pop radio, despite her success on AC and most recently on HAC. True, I do not care much for the heavy emphasis on hip-hop and rap on pop radio today, I still listen to it over AC mainly because it has a much fresher sound. Really, I think the AC and HAC formats need a major overhaul. The same accusations you push on pop radio could be applied to those formats. Why has AC radio abandoned core format artists like Jim Brickman and Celine Dion? Why have their playlists turned stale? Why are some songs like This Love getting heavy recurrent play on a format the song was not designed for?

My biggest problem with AC radio is that it plays VERY little new music, and the charts in BOTH trades are a JOKE; I have no idea what the recurrent rule in either trade is, but when I see songs that have been on the chrats at either trade in either the AC or Hot AC format for over FORTY weeks, then something is REALLY wong.
As I've said earlier, you'd be VERY hard-pressed to find aformat that hasn't deteriorated from a listenability and freshness standpoint due to an overreliance on consultants and research.
I've also said that the two best sounding formats on the air SHOULD be Hot AC and Oldies, but most formats seem to opeate with a library of no more than 250-300 songs, which makes for some VERY stale radio!!!!!!!
Some AC stations COULD also sound much better if not for that 300-title limit in their libraries as well.
