Proper ARTIST spacing on a CHR/Pop station???

It's always been pretty common practice to space out songs by the same artist a minumum of 40-45 minutes... however, I've noticed my CHR is blatently not doing this, often playing the same artist twice in 30 minutes... in one instance today, the spacing was all of 14 minutes, another 18 minutes... Have a look at today's spins 9am - 6:35 pm today at KIIS FM here in L.A. Note: artists spun 2x within a half hour period highlighted:

Normally, this is not what we would call good programming in terms of spacing as it can lead to "artist burn out"... thoughts?

And yes, that is a "Before He Cheats" spin a little after 1pm today... a lot shocking!

To compare, tonight New York City's WHTZ had adequate artist separation with the exception of playing Fergie consecutively ("Labels Or Love" then "Glamorous"). KIIS likes Mariah Carey based on what you posted, but WHTZ doesn't. In between 22 and 23 hours worth of time, they played no songs from her current album. Her only spins were 1 each for "Always Be My Baby" and "We Belong Together."

I hate it when stations do that. I was looking at a station playlist a couple of days ago and saw two Chris Brown songs played in the same hour (may've been less than 30 minutes). I would think that a PD or MD would get a clue and say, "This is too early to be playing another Chris Brown song."

I was talking to a programmer on www.radio-info.com yesterday and he says these days 30 minutes is the minumum you should have between songs by the same artist at a CHR or other contemporary format like Hot AC or Rhythmic... When you see the 14 minute separation as with the Usher songs (951am and 1005am) and the 19 minute one on the Mariah ones later (251pm and 310pm) that's simply just either laziness or bad programming or both.

The lone exception to the spacing policy is if they are doing some sort of artist promo such as Bon Jovi in studio as was the case at Hot AC WPLJ yesterday where they played 5 straight songs of theirs over the 50+ minutes he was on air... Also, it's common for stations to play back-to-back songs by the same artist for a contest.

As for Mariah, KIIS is a more "artist based" CHR than most - almost like an old album rock station actually. WHTZ seems to be more "song based" like your typical CHR... neither of Mariah's first two singles from the current album tested well at mainstream pop, but they did decently at rhythmic. Given KIIS leans heavily toward the rhythmic side and WHTZ is more mainstream, this would probably further explain why the new Mariah is on KIIS but not WHTZ.

I think 30 to 45 minutes is appropriate, regardless of the format. Anything less than that can lead to burnout on a particular artist.

On a couple of the stations I listen to, they play certain artists' songs back to back! Like they'll play Madonna's "Give It 2 Me" and then "Material Girl" right after. I don't mind that, but then it feels like all they ever play is that particular artist. I see this happen with other artists too.

If more stations adopt the same strategy as KIIS LA, then CHR will look more and more like old school AOR. The cherry on top will be when when they start playing two or three songs from that artist back-to-back, just like Z100 with that "Labels Or Love"/"Glamorous" thing with Fergie.

Yes... got Colby O'Donis' "What You Got" 2x in an hour and Plies 2x in 3 songs! Yikes!!!

There was a superb two-part story on KIIS which ran recently in back-to-back issues of R&R, which included compelling stories on the entire airstaff, including all the dues they paid, and how they all used connections and or 'worked their way up the ladder' to get to KIIS.

I didn't know that midday personality Sisanie had formerly been on the air at two San Diego stations (CHR/Pop KHTS & Country KUSS) at the age of 19!!!

John Ivey has been the PD for seven years (longest in the station's history, BTW), and spent the previous six years as PD at Boston's WXKS.

Getting back to the topic ('bout time dude!!!!) there are indeed tons of music execs who are frustrated by not being able to get airplay for rock acts at KIIS, but in a market with almost 42% hispanics, nobody at the station appears to be all that worried about that, since KIIS is #1 in the market, and Ryan Seacrest is is #1 in more demos than anybody not named Kidd Kraddick!!

Since they know what their targeted audience is, I don't have a problem with them playing two songs by the same artist within 60-75 minutes, if that's what they have to do to hold onto their very young and fickle audience.

But they never did that during the glory days of 1982-88, when it was truly a mass-appeal radio station, and essentially played everything at a time when the format was inundated with terrific songwriters, something that hasn't been the case in well over a decade.

I don't know how many other top 40 stations do likewise these days; I'd never listen to a station which did so unless it was aimed at adults, which hasn't applied to KIIS (and lots of other top 40 outlets out there) since 25-year old Carrie Underwood was in kindergarten!!!

It seems since stations are more or less programmed by computers these days, mistakes like that are more likely to happen, and as Chase mentioned earlier, especially if one person is programming multiple stations, it's even more likely to happen.

So many programming programs have rules set in a manner that it's nearly impossible to schedlue more than 4 songs without a song being flagged as breaking a scheduling rule, and as lovely as it would be to go through all 24 hours in a day and fix every single scheduling error, most people in that position have much more to do than just schedule music.

Thanks for all the info man...def. think the songwriting during most of the 80s was pretty poor though, esp. in terms of lyrics (with a couple exceptions) - IMO the most talented songwriters came out in the mid 90s (Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms, Matchbox Twenty, Alanis, Goo Goo Dolls) and early 00s (Creed, Lifehouse, Nickelback, M5, etc.), but just my opinion lol...

Also think it's important to take into account that there was no such thing as Hot AC during the 80s, so KIIS really had to play all the hits (and be mass-appeal)...I just can't think of any rhythmic-leaning CHR that doesn't have a HAC in the market to cover the rest of the more rock-oriented hits - can't imagine any market (esp. a larger one) completely leaving pop/rock-oriented acts out entirely, except maybe Miami and Honolulu cause of ethnicity/listening trends

Let me jump in here with a couple points...

1. CHR TSL is way down, even in relation to just a couple years ago. Remember that the average CHR listener is constantly on the move... in and out of their car, on and off their cell phones, etc, etc. To combat that, we tend to ignore some of the "traditional" scheduling rules that other formats still hold true to, because we want to make the odds very strong that - at any given time - our radio stations are going to be playing the biggest hits of any given time.

2. Building on point #1, who cares about artist sep anymore, particularly when you have artists guesting all over other artists' records? If it's a hit, play it. The CHR listener that listens for more than about 12-16 minutes at a time is a RARE listener anymore.


To answer the question of the thread, I look for at least 30 mintues on a primary artist on a record and at least 15 on a secondary.

On your first post, it's common to see "Forever" and "No Air" close together like that. Chris is not the main artist, Jordin is. But the Mariah and Usher ones are just WOW! Especially the whole "Love In This Club", another song, "Burn" thing!

The practice of playing two songs by the same artist within 45-75-90 minutes is a rather recent phenomenon, although that was the case during the early stages of Beatlemania in 1963-64.

During the Saturday Night Fever craze of 1977-78, the Bee Gees had three singles in the top ten simultaneously, and Barry Gibb wrote or co-wrote eight #1 singles in 1978, breaking the 1964 record of seven set by John Lennon & Paul McCartney.

The top 40 audience has been getting progressively younger during the past several years, and has gained many more non-white listeners during that time, so the practice of playing two songs by the same artist within 90 minutes has really soared recently; that wasn't the case during the eighties or nineties.

When you have top 40 stations playing some tunes over 100 times a week, this practice became inevitable.

Well, if it's a "featured" artist, I can't imagine it counting. 'No Air' seems to be associated more with Jordin than Chris so playing another Jordin song soonafter would be weird.

And I'm so used to an artist spacing being two hours or more, which I still think might be a bit ridiculous but on the Pop format not so much since it is so currents based.

I find hardcore artist spacing on Rhythmic and Urbans less frequent than other formats. The songs do have their share of many featured artists today (T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Akon), but if it fits the "flow" of the music currently playing, an artist may have several tracks (featured or not) quite close together.

In daily mixes, its not uncommon for two recent hit songs by one artist to get mixed into each other (lately I've heard Lollipop and A Milli). The audience typically enjoys this idea and usually ups the ante of a good mix. Considering KIIS is more Rhythmic-leaning, the audience probably doesn't mind the small spacing at all.

^^ I think the back to back thing is just fine as it doesn't break up a station's continuity... the problem is when you put the same artist in and then throw in 3-4 songs and then that same artist again 20 minutes later. To me that's either just plain lazyness or bad programming. Whenever I'm on a drive with some friends and station does this, invariably someone will say "didn't they just play that song/artist" or something to that effect. It's never a positive from their point of view.

That's highly unusual for a Hot AC to do that. I can somehow see a CHR station resorting to that kind of repetition, but Hot AC is definitely about variety!

That's why I favor Hot AC 10 times over CHR these days. Now, some modern ACs have a higher amount of repetition due to their focus on more current stuff. But even the modern ACs and the Hot ACs with a distinct CHR lean don't spin anywhere near the amount of monotonous repetition that a regular CHR does on an average day.

Mix 96.9 will often spin a number of recurrents back to back right after Casey Kasem's AT20 show. They'll even throw in some '80s or '90s hits to avoid repetition of what was just played in the week's top 20 countdown.

That's highly unusual for a Hot AC to do that. I can somehow see a CHR station resorting to that kind of repetition, but Hot AC is definitely about variety!

I think it was more the result of someone just not paying attention at the station... good ol' lazy programming at work again.
