Observations:
12/6/86 gets played for the fifth time. Four of those were in the last six years. Last week was a repeat chart from last year, and next week will be as well. How original.
For the fourth straight week, 90s on 9 features the same year as the corresponding week in 2022. At least this one was a different chart. But it's too much of a coincidence to not be intentional. I can hardly wait to see how long this pattern keeps up.
Also, the #1 song played on the 1997 countdown was "Something About The Way You Look Tonight." Of course, this was the B side to the actual song that was #1 on the Hot 100. That didn't stop Julie Brown from claiming that we undoubtedly remember all the words to the song given that it was #1 for 10 weeks (it was actually 14 weeks). Really, Julie? Do you remember the song that well, because I'm betting virtually nobody was singing along...

They have the same issue with Jewel and in particular Alanis Morrisette where they always play you oughta know instead of you learn which was the hit in 1996

They did play the wrong Jewel song this week in addition to the Elton mix-up.

It was listed that way in Billboard as it was receiving far more airplay than Elt's 'Candle at this point.

They should only play You Learn as that was the dominant hit by that point in the summer of 96. Also looking at billboard now Candle in the wind is the A side well into 98

That did indeed happen and was explained Nov 1st on page 101 as Something was bulleted on the airplay chart 30-36 while 'Candle was flickering 45-32. Something would peak at #18 on the Nov 29th airplay chart.

I appreciate all of the insight regarding the double-sided singles. It certainly makes things confusing for whoever produces these flashback countdowns.
I still think it was silly to suggest that everybody was singing along to the Elton John song due to its longevity at #1. Despite its lengthy run at #1 on the Hot 100, it performed poorly on the airplay chart and I don't think many people remember it that fondly, certainly not the way we remember Elton's 1970's hits.
Also, with regards to Jewel, at this time in 1997 Foolish Games was the hit song. It may not have been listed first on the single, but it was definitely getting more airplay by November.
This is why the Hot 100 is a poor choice for a 1990s retro countdown. I'm sure there are legal reasons why they use it, but it's still not good. The rest of the time, they play the big 1990s hits as we heard them on the radio, but during the 1994-1999 countdowns that is generally not what we hear.

SATWYLT was #1 for 10 weeks on the AC chart which had more weight for airplay at the time than it does now. It also did well on Adult Top 40 and did get pop airplay. Pretty much it was the sales that kept it going at the top, but by this point Candle in the Wind was not getting much airplay outside of AC.

Yes but if you look at the billboard charts now Candle is listed first the entire run now. Not sure what changed If you mean Billboard's website, they're not reliable when it comes to double-sided hits. "Foolish Games" is credited with "You Were Meant for Me" for its entire chart run on their website when it was actually added on in September of 1997. The archives of their physical magazine have SATWYLT listed as the a-side for this week.

The hot 100 sort of got better after the December 1998 inclusion of airplay only songs.
It is still a far cry from what was heard on radio. There were still plenty of radio songs that did not make it to the billboard top 40. And that goes into the 2000s and to the present.
Then I bet there were some more rhythmic friendly pop stations that might have played the rap that made it on the top 40 of the hot 100. Plus you would hear these rhythm songs on FLY.

imagine Casey Kasem today using the hot 100 today if he were alive.
Now we've come to the number one song. It is a golden oldie Christmas song that took fifty plus years to reach the top.

17 22 Playaz Circle ft. Lil Wayne - Duffle Bag Boy*
It seems like pop2K is now the one with errors in the countdown. The 80s still has its blunders too.

Leave it to 90s on 9 to fix one problem, only to screw up all the same. After four weeks of featuring the exact same year as 2022, they went with something different this week. However, they played 12/4/93 (least heard three years ago) instead of the more fitting 12/11/93 (last heard eleven years ago). At least next week's VJ Big 40 will *not* be a repeat for a change. imagine Casey Kasem today using the hot 100 today if he were alive. "Well, we have two debuts this week, plus seventeen re-entries. That means we have to say goodbye to nineteen droppers, and they are (takes deep breath)..."

Especially when certain new albums come out buy top acts like Taylor Swift, Drake and many more.

Then there will be 1985 and a special. If they start off 2024 with 1980 or 1988, either choice will yield a repeat.
I wonder what will this years new years special will be.
