I'm surprised This Afternoon wasn't a huge hit, but considering CHR's current electro obsession, I guess it isn't that surprising. I wonder if they'll wait another couple years to release another CD or if they'll start soon because this one's almost done.

They are a huge group. They're albums always sale big. U2 is a huge group and their last album disappointed sales-wise. Same with Green Day. That said, I think the reason "Dark Horse" sold robustly despite lacking a hit with considerable staying power is because the band are excellent in deciphering what their fans want an, more importantly, know how to communicate directly to their listeners and consistently deliver well-constructed songs with anthemic, strong hooks. Communication truly is vital. Bono has admitted himself that their latest album underachieved because it was inaccessible musically and lyrically. Green Day's latest bombed because no one wants to hear depressing, ardently political musical drama in an era where the youth are looking for something to hope for and believe in since the Bush era came to pass...................while Nickelback continue to run strong because they know exactly what the bulk of their fans want, how to pitch it to them and give a show that doesn't hit you over the head pretentiously and rather feels like some enormous tailgate party. It's much the same reason why Kid Rock has remained an industry force and, more recently, the Zac Brown Band has emerged. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

Well did'nt both Greenday & U2's last albums both go platinum ? "No Line on the Horizon" did, while I don't even think "21st Century Breakdown" has. U2 really haven't been all that much of a singles band. They have gotten many hits, but they're also not hits that blow up and dominate the Mainstream Top 40 (or any format other than Triple A, for that matter), which has especially been true since the "Achtung Baby" era............the last time you can say they truly dominated the singles charts. U2 have been as colossal as they have, regardless, because of the way they have communicated to a wide spectrum of listeners through their live shows, creative means of publicity, and focusing on creating compelling albums of material as opposed to collections of songs, that nonetheless also stand on their own as individual tracks that anthemically resonate to so many emotionally. U2's latest still went Platinum regardless because they have a track record too triumphant for their many fans to turn away from. Even so, its legs have been very weak and the overall decline in sales throughout the industry really is NO excuse for a decline this steep. "No Line on the Horizon" underachieved because it was too dense, it was something you couldn't really sink your teeth into, and was also inconsistent. It surely disappointed fans who, in advance, were expecting a more experimental album in that it truly lacks songs with that Moroccan musical feel, "real molten metal" or the "dance-floor shock" they had previously indicated it would have in press releases, while fans of their more traditional sound expressed much disappointment over many tracks, despite being strong enough, didn't really speak to them like their music usually does due to the oblique lyrics and spacey production. U2 essentially left both camps down to some extent, hence sales declined sharply. With Green Day, it's certainly easy to argue "American Idiot" only succeeded as it did because it was the right album released at the right time right smack dab in the middle of the Bush era, while "21st Century Breakdown" bombed due to it being released at the wrong time and perhaps widespread fatigue towards their political music.............but a near-Platinum follow-up to a six-times platinum blockbuster is, any way you look at it, an 84% sales decline from the previous era: a decline much, much sharper than the industry's sale trend overall. I can't think of anyone bigger than Nickelback and Taylor Swift in album sales now (Gaga comes third, Susan Boyle also...) but these two are consistent...
