According to AllAccess as of Saturday morning (2/14), Taylor Swift is #1. It looks like this will be the first #1 song by a country artist on the CHR/Pop chart in almost 28 years, when Kenny Rogers was #1 with "Lady" (Nov-Dec 1980). FYI, the late Eddie Rabbitt's "I Love A Rainy Night" and Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" both hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 (the formula then is similiar to what's used for their Pop 100 now) chart back in early 1981. Those were actually back-to-back #1's on that chart.

At least on the radio (since Kiss 108 plays the remix), I can really only tell the difference if I hear the very beginning of the song. The verses and chorus sound identical. ;) Are you sure you are listening to the Pop mix? or is it the International Mix? The Pop mix has the electronic drum sound all over the intro, verses and the crossing from the bridge to the last chorus. Once I confused the Pop with the International mix and was, as you, wondering what all the fuss was about ;)

Trying to claim that the majority of Love Story's success comes from the remix is, well, ridiculous. Actually, on Pop, I do think that the success of 'Love Story' is in large part thanks to the Pop mix. There is NO WAY some Pop stations would have played the song (even though the original version is awesome) without a Pop mix. Kiss 108 in Boston and Z100 both played the Pop mix. They are two of the biggest radio stations in the nation. So, it seems to me that the Pop mix did its job: get this song to #1 on Pop. Obviously, the original version got the song to #1 on the Country chart and excellent iTunes sales. Congrats on the #1! This song deserved it. And I love the pop mix! I think it is way better than the original. I like both versions equally. I am SO glad that this is #1. First country song to hit the top of the Pop charts in 28 years!

Obviously, the original version got the song to #1 on the Country chart and excellent iTunes sales. As well as its #5 peak on the Hot 100. The only part of Love Story's success that can be attributed to the remix would be its performance on Chr/Pop radio (and we aren't even sure exactly how big of a roll that played until we find out which version every station played). While the remix might have been played on much bigger stations on Chr/Pop it doesn't mean it brought her to #1 as the #1 position isn't determined by airplay (where those large stations come in) but by spins.

^^ I get that, Will. But a lot of the smaller stations follow the bigger station's leads. It's really dificult to get a hit without the support of Z100 or Kiss 108. I just don't see how this song could have gotten to #1 without a Pop mix.
Now, please understand that in NO way do I think this takes away from this song's success. It's still amazing to me that this song made it all the way to #1 on Pop while bein sung by a country artist.

"Love Story" stays at #2 for a second week in Australia, while Fearless goes up one spot to #6.

well actually it could be half and half because i bet the more southern or country leaning stations would play the original.
But who cares lets just soak up the success

It's a nice accomplishment, but the fact that it took a horrible pop remix to get this to #1 at top 40 radio clearly displays the dramatic difference between top 40 radio back then vs. top 40 radio these days.
I have no idea why our ineptly programmed Hot AC station (KBIG/LA) is playing that remix, but that's another story.

I should have added that. All three of those songs got to #1 on the Hot 100 thanks to their sales. Eddie's song was everywhere when it was a hit... tv commercials, promos, all kinds of stuff.

Back then, the same version would have been played on both Country and Pop without any thought of a remix... This sounded pop enough without a remix. I don't see why CHR & Hot AC would have any problem playing the original.

It still amazes me that LeAnn's "How Do I Live" never hit #1. It peaked at #2 and I believe stayed there for eons. It is the 4th-most successful single in Billboard history, and never went #1.
I like Taylor's path. She seems to be taking a page from Shania/LeAnn/Faith book on pop crossover success. She has a lot to learn still with regards to be ing a performer, bt she is a solid talent and I expect good things from Taylor for a good while...

Completely agree about the Pop mix thing but Kiss 108 Boston actually "tags along" on a lot of new hits, esp. by new artists...def. agree that smaller stations follow Z100's lead though

Actually think it might be the opposite (i. e. back in the 80s Country songs with pop potential sounded more pop in their original version...no fiddles etc. in Islands In The Stream or Lady etc.) Just can't see Northeast or West Coast cities playin the original and it gettin to #1 (tons of people there say they "hate" Country music, esp. in Northeast)

Just can't see Northeast or West Coast cities playin the original and it gettin to #1 (tons of people there say they "hate" Country music, esp. in Northeast) Out here in SoCal there’s a more substantial country following than some might think. LA’s nothing more than a collection of suburbs and some are less urban than others. And don’t forget the Streets of Bakersfield. :) I can’t help thinking that if the original version of Love Story had been released as a pop single rather than country, no one would have blinked. Yes, I can feel its Nashville roots, but with its pounding rhythms and chord progressions it sure could have fooled me. Watching Taylor perform this with Def Leppard on Crossroads, I was struck by how adaptable Love Story is, especially compared to the other Taylor songs they performed. Joe Elliot sounded right at home on Love Story, which is saying something.
