When they speed up the songs do they just resample (not preserving tempo or pitch)? So I'm basically asking is the song "sharper" when they speed up songs? There are ways to speed up songs keeping the pitch the same, but usually it doesn't sound great. WWYL in Binghamton, NY does that. I'll put up a YouTube audio clip of regular then speeded up music using my Sony cassette deck which has a Pitch Control.

This is hillarious. I used to think i was the only dork who sped up songs with Audacity just because the radio made it sound better. good to know im not alone!

When I lived in Boston in the 90s, WXKS sped up all their songs big time...about 3-4 years ago they stopped doin it though, playin songs at normal speed, and meanwhile Hot AC WBMX started speedin up songs instead...
WNKS/Charlotte def. sped up songs, esp. rock and Hot AC crossovers
WSTR/Atlanta seems to speed them up just slightly...WWWQ not as much

I think we lost some posts on this thread or something... KIIS and KHAY (Country) are the two I notice the most here in the L.A. area... KFRG (Country) does as well, but not as sped up as KHAY.

I once emailed Paul Cubby Bryant from Z100 NY and he told me that Z100 does NOT speed songs up. You guys need to hear WFLY out of Albany. Don't Stop The Music sounds horrible. Timbaland's The Way I Are sounds ridiculous. When they used to play Kanye West Stronger it sounded like he was a chipmunk.
Overall, an absolutely HORRIBLE practice radio does.

Yeah, I remember when I was like 12-13 years old and some friends or my cousins would come over, I'd make a CD to listen to and I'd speed the songs up AND compress the audio JUST so it would sound radio-like. BEFORE I could burn CD's I would record tracks off CD's onto a cassette recorder and when THEY were played for my friends, the songs would be SLOWER than normal, due to the different speeds of the cassette players

WKST 96.1 Kiss in Pittsburgh speeds things up quite a bit, including AT40. It's fun to hear Seacrest pitched up.

^^^
SET SONG PITCH = 4.0% SET SHOW PITCH = 4.0%
That's what used to appear in the logs at the top of the hour when I was there a few years ago... 4% is too much, IMO. 2-2.5 is perfect, 3.0, I can live with.

I knew WKST was pitching higher than most, but 4%, wow! And it really sounds bad on a show like AT40, where at times Seacrest almost sounds distorted as he also sounds like a chipmunk.

Some songs sound a lot better sped up. A couple of good examples are "Never Too Late" from Three Days Grace and "Time Ago" from Black Lab (1998).
