Off hand I know that WBLI, WKSC, WAKS, WKFS, WAPE, WHYI, WPOW, KCJZ, KIIS, KKRZ, and KHTS speeds up their music.
I dont like this practice because it's tampering with the overall sound. Music should be heard the way it originally sounded while in the recording studio.

Just out of curiosity, so why do these stations speed up their songs? Is it because that way they can plays more songs in an hour? Or is it due to some other ridiculous reasons?

Yeah I also used to do that to my mp3s to make them seem more upbeat and hyper sounding.

The only song I would speed up in my collection is DJ Sammy "Boys Of Summer". To me it sounds depressing played at normal speed.

Besides KHTS, the only other SD stations that do it are the country stations KSON and XHCR. KYSR in Los Angeles no longer speeds up the music.

I think Z100 speeds up some songs...They just sound different then when listening to the same song on CD...

Kiss FM in Savannah, WSSX in Charleston, SC WDCG in Raliegh, and WERO in Greenville, NC also do. I think the only ones that don't that I can think of offhand are Kiss FM in Gainesville, FLZ, XL, WJMX (Florence, SC) and Mix 97.7 in Myrtle Beach.

I think AT40 does it too. I don't think that they do. If so, it's news to me. Open House Party does, though.

Listening to my airchecks, it sounds like WKEE Huntington and WNDV South Bend speed up songs. WLKT, WLLD, WSTO, and WIFX were at normal speed. Of course that depends if the person used the same tape recorder for each station. The only way you can really tell is by listening live or if it was recorded on mp3 or CD.

The music is recorded onto an AudioVault hard drive at regular speed and there's no way to speed it up within the automation. WRHT/WCBZ (also in Greenville) does speed it up significantly, though.

I went to Hilo on May 1st- no station was speeding up songs over there. So to the best of my knowledge KPMW on Maui is the only station speeding up songs in Hawai'i.

Listening to my airchecks, it sounds like WKEE Huntington and WNDV South Bend speed up songs. According to my airchecks which I got recently on CD, KRBV Dallas and KWTX Waco speed up songs.

yes they definately do. In the beginning of CHUD it sounds so fast I listened to an aircheck of Kiss 108 and it is indeed very fast. They probably use the 2% speed. Most other stations increase it by 1%.

Z-100 does that here. It kind of ruins the songs IMO.

On my trip to Atlanta, I discovered WZYP/Huntsville and WCGQ/Columbus speeds up songs. However, WZBQ/Tuscaloosa no longer does it.

The thing is, most people aren't going to notice that songs are sped up. Only people (like us) who are music fans will ever really notice that songs are sped up.
As for the ethics in doing it, I think that it is tampering with the artist's song, but then again is the neccessary editing to remove expletives, etc. which must be removed to be played on the air. But because of the fact that some songs are inappropriate for younger kids to hear, I agree with that pracitce.
But speeding songs up is another issue. I understand that stations want to make more money, but speeding up songs is a rather dirty way to go about getting more advertising space.

The thing is, most people aren't going to notice that songs are sped up. Only people (like us) who are music fans will ever really notice that songs are sped up. That's true. The former PD of a station I listen to said that he never got a single response from listeners about the music being sped up. I always wondered how the artists themselves feel about it.
But speeding songs up is another issue. I understand that stations want to make more money, but speeding up songs is a rather dirty way to go about getting more advertising space.
Squeezing more commercials was an unintended consequence. The actual purpose was to make a competitor sound slow.

As of this week, all the Clear Channel Jackson FMs (WHLH, WMSI, WQJQ, WSTZ) have sped up their music. I'm wondering if it were a directive from one of the higher-ups there. WMSI and WSTZ started doing it the same day.
