Would you consider "The Old Apartment" by the Barenaked Ladies obscure? I heard it today in a surprising place - WIOG's 90s at Noon!

^^ Yes, I'd consider that obscure.
This morning on urban AC WKXI-FM, they played "Victory" by Kool & the Gang. Tonight, I heard "Modern Woman" by Billy Joel via The Amazing 80s show.

103.5 FM in South Florida is digging up LOADS of obscure songs, like Mark Morrison's Return of the Mack. Love that one.

^"Return Of The Mack" obscure?? Surely you jest!
Well, anyway, yesterday, on 94.9 The Coast, I heard the 1986 version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by the Police. About a half an hour later, they played "Boom Boom Boom Boom" by the Vengaboys.

During an all-request hour on Star 105.7, I heard Firehouse's "Love of a Lifetime" and Soul II Soul's "Back to Life".

And the latter is relative to areas of the country - every now and then I'll hear "Don't Stand So Close to Me" come on.

Perhaps you didn't read close enough. I said it was the 1986 version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me". Sure, you hear the original version from 1981 everytime you turn on the radio, but the newer version hardly gets any airplay at all.

It's been a while since I've heard both songs myself, though LOAL would fit more than BTL.

Sure, you hear the original version from 1981 everytime you turn on the radio, but the newer version hardly gets any airplay at all. Oh shoot, that's right. I'd forgotten that there's two versions of the song. My mistake. Depending on how old somelikeitwhen is, those two songs probably could be obscure to him. It's been a while since I've heard both songs myself, though LOAL would fit more than BTL. LOAL could be a case of how it's held up in areas of the country - for example, my area seems to love Firehouse. It's likely that other areas of the country are the polar opposite. I'll shut up now though; I feel like I'm bringing down this thread.

No, I don't jest. I've never heard of those songs, let alone those bands. I'm only 15, but I know a lot more than you think I know.

I'll shut up now though; I feel like I'm bringing down this thread. You're not bringing it down. You're right about some songs and artists do tend to latch on longer in some areas than at other areas. Obviously, the stations do their research and that's the results they get. That's probably why you hear Firehouse more in Michigan than down here in Mississippi. Back to obscure songs, this week's Amazing 80s show features 1989's "Veronica" by Elvis Costello.

I'm gonna let you guys be the judge whether this is obscure or not since I don't have real knowledge of this song, but Jack FM just played "Destination Unknown" by Missing Persons. I had to go a Google search on the lyrics to even know who it was.

There's a high school radio station I get that plays a pretty cool mix of songs. Most of the ones I heard last time weren't really obscure, but two that might count:
-"Bittersweet" by Big Head Todd and The Monsters -"C-I-T-Y" by John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band

^ "Bittersweet" is definitely obscure. "C-I-T-Y"--you could go either way on that, though I would lean obscure.

Saturday night I heard "A Matter of Trust" by Billy Joel on WQBX, a semi-local Hot AC which was doing an 80s program (I think they play 80s on Saturday nights). Right after that I heard "Is it Love" by Mr. Mister, which, while it may not be obscure, you certainly don't hear it that often.

Speaking of 80s programs, this past weekend's Backtrax USA featured "King For A Day" by the Thompson Twins, though I would call that one semi-obscure.

On Wild 104: "This Time Around" Hanson (The oldest one had a kid. Now I feel old.)
On KGB: "Forever" Kid Rock (They never play this type of music.)

On Sunday I heard Matchbox Twenty's "Mad Season" on WMJO. My Hot AC station plays that all the time. How is that obscure?

Can you say the same thing about every other Hot AC in the country? Plus, you're talking Hot AC, the format where "Mad Season" had its best outcome (#6, compared to Pop's #19).

My station used to play a lot of odd songs. I wish I could access old station playlists.
