You know all those songs that achieved classic status, or many people know, or that you seem to hear all the time on Gold rotation or VH-1 Classic, but which stats show weren't that big hits at the time of their original release? You bet there are a lot of them! So let's start this thread and pay them their due tribute. Without further ado, here are some of my picks:
THE WAITRESSES "I Know What Boys Like" (#62 Hot 100)
It's considered an early MTV classic, it gets tons of play on VH-1 Classic, it regularly appears in Greatest One-Hit Wonders countdowns, it appears in lots of New Wave/80s compilations... I mean, you'd think this song was gigantic back then.
LED ZEPPELIN "Stairway To Heaven" (DNC)
Just look at the name of the band and the song's title. Say no more!
LYNYRD SKYNYRD "Freebird" (#19 Hot 100)
See above.
SUGARHILL GANG "Rapper's Delight" (#35 Hot 100)
Ditto.

Here's some to start off:
Radiohead - "Creep" (#34 Hot 100) AC/DC - "Back in Black" (#37 Hot 100) Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 - "The Message" (#62 Hot 100) Jimi Hendrix - "Purple Haze" (#65 Hot 100) The Who - "My Generation" (#74 Hot 100) Bob Marley - "No Woman, No Cry" (DNC) David Bowie - "Heroes" (DNC)
For some artists, especially Hendrix and Marley, there's a whole bunch to choose from. In those cases, I went with what I consider to be their 'signature' songs.

This is always an interesting subject.
Are there any from recent times?

Modern English - I Melt With You: Believe it or not, it only peaked in the 60s.
Eddie Money - Shakin': #63.

Gosh... I have a book of these that peaked outside the top 30, though I'd have to research the peak positions:
Journey - Wheel In The Sky Journey - Lights Honeymoon Suite - New Girl Now Buster Poindexter - Hot Hot Hot New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle New Order - Blue Monday Depeche Mode - Everything Counts Yaz - Situation Q-Feel - Dancin' In Heaven George Clinton - Atomic Dog The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go Live - I Alone Jon Astley - Jane's Getting Serious Randy Newman - I Love L.A. The Scorpions - No One Like You Sublime - What I Got
those are off the top of my head... there are a lot of them...

I don't know if any of these can really qualify. I disagree. Not sure on "Lights" (#68), but "Wheel in the Sky" (#57) and "No One Like You"? Definitely.

This is always an interesting subject.
Are there any from recent times? If 1999 can be considered recent, here goes. ICE CUBE f/ MACK 10 & MS. TOI "You Can Do It" (#35 Billboard Hot 100, #26 Rhythmic Top 40, #14 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks)

Yeah, I was looking anything post-1994. ;)
The Ice Cube example works.
I think it's interesting because this is proof that airplay and even sales numbers for a single doesn't necessarily provide the only basis of what makes a hit song. A lot of the songs mentioned I would consider to be pretty big hits even if they don't have the numbers to back them up.

It some markets (including L.A.), these songs did quite well, and let's not forget that a lot of people know that Jon Astley song from the Heinz ketchup commericals...

(btw, most of the songs I'll be posting, in case you haven't noticed, will be ones that never hit the top 40 at pop)... One more to add: Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party

Another one: Elton John's "Tiny Dancer"... peaked at #41, yet it's a classic-hits staple today. On the other hand, his huge hit "Island Girl" (which spent three weeks at #1) rarely gets played anymore (maybe its lyrics are too politically incorrect).

And the Madonna song is especially notorious in this context. It might be an underrated gem, for sure. But I don't know if radio still plays it, or if people still remember it. One thing is for certain: she hasn't played it live for ages. I might even dare say she never played it live in the first place!

A lot of songs are used in commercials. Locksley has songs in commercials. Nobody does it like She Does is played on the Fox news every day and in other commercials. What a great song that is.
