I remember hearing this at work for the longest time not knowing who it was and not really liking it. Then when it was released to radio I really grew to like it. I believe it peaked somewhere in the mid-teens on my chart.

They (or he) had an excellent song a couple of years ago called "Still Fighting It". I like it better but it really didn't do well on the charts.

I really liked this song alot. I didn't really get into Ben Folds Five other material but this song is a classic in my mind. It only peaked at #11 on my personal chart though :o It definitely deserved better thatn that.

They (or he) had an excellent song a couple of years ago called "Still Fighting It". I like it better but it really didn't do well on the charts. that was just Ben Folds, he continued on his own after the group disbanded. On the subject of "Brick" it was awesome, and it can reflect on how some people feel in their relationships

I must admit I totally forgot about this song and the band for that matter. I remember liking "Brick"; I thought the piano suited the song well. Really haven't heard much else from this group...the only other song I remember by them is "Army", which I really couldn't stand.

Always have loved this song! But it always depresses me when he mentions the day after Christmas.... just such a depressing day.

I loved this song! I could never figure out what the song was about at the time, but listening to it now I think it was about a young married couple who got in a little trouble (abortion?). Is that even close?

Yes, it was about abortion, but I only know that because the hosts of the countdown shows I listened to back in 1998 said so. Otherwise, I would never have figured that out, since I can't tell by any of the lyrics.

Is that even close? You got it. Though I don't think they were married; the girl was still living with her parents, but yeah, it was basically about an aboriton. Abortion is a pretty uncommon topic in songs, but it's interesting how the following year ('99), another song mentioned abortion---Everlast's "What It's Like".

I liked this one too although not as much as I probably would now if it was released. I haven't heard it in years though. Should try to find it sometime soon. :)

Great song. I'm a young one though, and it shows since this song reminds me of my last day of junior high school. Another good one from Ben Folds Five is "Steven's Last Night In Town." Hilarious.

I love this one. I didn't really pay attention to what it was about, until a couple months ago whenever Ben Folds came to my town and basically sold the crowd with impressiveness. I didn't care for him a whole lot until the performance, which was great. I can't think of how much talent it takes for an artist to only be with a piano and move the audience, it's that good.
But this song is great either live or studio. It's depressing, that's for sure, and that is one thing that I like about it. Songs that I've heard studio versions of include this, "Evaporated", "Song For The Dumped", "The Battle of Who Could Care Less", and "Army".
One solo song from him that I liked was "Rockin' The Suburbs", satire at angry disgruntled rockers, although SFI was a well-written song.

The song was very likeable, but it burned out on me after awhile. I guess the piano-driven rock ballads just don't have much staying power with me.
I loved "Rockin' The Suburbs", though.

Five for Fighting reminds me of this band. Imagine how confused people would be if they came out at the same time!

"Papa Don't Preach" (the video anyway) was about a father who wanted his unmarried daughter to have an abortion.
"Miracle" by Whitney Houston was an anti-abortion song.

Ben Folds Five fans sniff in disdain when I tell them this is my favorite Ben Folds Five song.
The other one I really really like is Leather Jacket.

But this song is great either live or studio. Oh, the live version was so much better.

It never dawned on me what the song was about until I heard Rick Dees year end 98 Countdown. I listened to the lyrics and it made perfect sense that it was about having an abortion. I liked the song a lot, and remember playing it while I was doing dishes with my mother a week or so before she died. I remember her saying it was a "cute" song.

If she was a brick, does that mean that Ben was a bricklayer?

I don't like it. It's too depressing. Agreed. I always associate it with that song "The Freshman" by The Verve Pipe. Both songs were hits at the same time and they were both such downers.

They were station turners.
