This is possibly the scariest pop single I have ever heard. It absolutely terrifies me. There's something really sinister about it....
Maybe it's a German thing.....

I've always liked how that song juxtaposes carefree lyrics with the "scarier" sounding effects and music. Like they're trying to tell us that the whole "puttin' on the ritz" thing isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Are you also afraid of White Town's "Your Woman"? They have a similar sound.

LOL...
Taco did look kinda scary, though... all that pale makeup, sorta like Dr. Frank N. Furter from Rocky Horror.

They played this on AT20 earlier this year. It's OK.

Back when this song was popular, they played the single version of this song. Years later, when I heard the song on Backtrax USA, they played a longer version of it and I was like, "Wow, I don't remember all this!" (referring to the mumbo jumbo near the end). I thought it was just different than I remembered (since, as I said, it was about twelve years before). But when I heard it on AT40 Flashback, I found out that I was indeed correct, that there was a shorter version of it. Backtrax USA tends to play extended versions of certain songs.
Anyway, I liked this song. Definitely a welcome departure from the usual sounds of 1983 (though, in retrospect...)

I can see how some might think that way. It's DEFINITELY weird-sounding - then & now. However, I can honestly say that Taco's cover of "Ritz" is my ALL-TIME favorite song! It had a very creative way of reviving that vintage 1930s/1940s sound with '80s techno-pop. The rhythmic tap-dancing number, and the clever ending were the highlights. I have his After Eight album, as well as Let's Face the Music and Dance. Most of the tracks on those albums are good too - especially "Cheek to Cheek", "Singin' in the Rain", and "Let's Face the Music". Taco was a 1-hit wonder who deserved to be more of a success in his day. His talent was grossly under-rated!

The single version was only 3:19. The longer version you heard was the original album track - clocking in at over 5 minutes. It had a longer tap-dance routine, a part in the middle that sounded almost like a rap ("get your kicks at the Ritz"), and a longer ending.

I just found out that this song has 2 different videos. The original video showed black-faced dancers lip-synching the "super dooper" lines. The 2nd video version had the black-faced dancers edited out & replaced with a picture of Gary Cooper. I suppose the edit was because of p.c. reasons.

One of the weirdest 80s pop hits that I ever heard. I didn't like it initially but it soon grew into a guilty pleasure. Heard it on 101.9 the Mix during their' 80s at 8pm hour when I was younger. I prefer the full version (which is less than 5 minutes) to the radio edit (which is barely 3 minutes). full version www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMstTM01m28
