Who remembered Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" used in that charming and leading up to a scary scene in Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker's movie "Rush Hour"? The little girl was jamming to "Fantasy"! Cute! And then she gets kidnapped!

I have never seen the movie but that is cool that they use a Mariah jam.

I think they couldn't have chosen a more suitable song for that scene! An upbeat song, pop, appropriate for a little girl.... it fit perfectly into the movie!

"Fantasy" is a sad, repressed cry for help hidden behind bubbly beats and sugary vocals. It didn't take long for Mariah's marriage to Tommy Motolla to take a nosedive. She wasn't allowed out of his sight. She had to dress so that other men wouldn't look at her. If Tommy even thought Mariah's bodyguards were attracted to her, they were fired. Her refrigerator was locked so that she wouldn't gain weight. Mariah took all of this pain and put it towards 1995's Daydream, an album filled with songs about escape and the true love she was still out to find.
At the forefront of the project was the "Genius Of Love"-sampling "Fantasy". As usual, Mariah paid homage to the artists and hits of her childhood. "Fantasy" was a Mariah who wanted to get away. A Mariah sitting in her room at night because her husband won't even let her go out with her friends. A Mariah who had nothing to do other than fantasize about being with a man who would let her be herself and allow her to experience a youth which she had still not experienced by the age of twenty-five.
Tommy and the record label had many issues with the Daydream recordings. They feared that Mariah's lyrics were becoming too personal and nobody wanted to hear what Mariah was concerned with. An even bigger worry was that Mariah was hinting towards marriage troubles with Tommy Motolla. This particular track was originally met with ill-reaction by the record label. Mariah was working with the formula that made "Dreamlover" a hit, but it was obvious that she was headed in a more urban direction. This was the biggest fear for Columbia. Mariah's black roots were locked away for years. She was only allowed to credit them for the sake of soul. Columbia feared since the beginning that Mariah would want to break away and record music with hip-hop beats and urban themes. So their biggest nightmare came true when the conservative diva who recorded adult pop hits like "Dreamlover" and "Hero" brought her husband a remix of the lead single from Daydream featuring Wu-Tang clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. The remix dropped the synth elements of "Genius Of Love" as well as the bubbly chorus vocals. It's unknown how Mariah actually ended up getting her way with the remix, but she got the last laugh when the song topped the urban, pop, and club charts as well as sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks in the fall of 1995.
Mariah also took control when it came to the video. It was the first video she ever directed. It was shot in an amusement park in New York. There were two videos, one for the album version and one for the remix.
In 2000, pop tart Jessica Simpson referenced both the song and video with her single "I Think I'm In Love With You". She exchanged "Genius Of Love" for John Mellencamp's "Jack And Diane" and shot a similar amusement park themed video which like Mariah's video featured scenes with Jessica dancing around in a jeep by rollercoasters.

This song made me a Mariah fan. There are people out there who say that she doesn't push boundaries with her music, and this song is like a big smack on their faces for making such a claim. With "Fantasy," we saw how Mariah broke away from the HAC balladries of "Musicbox" to a hipper, more urban sound. She worked with a rapper, creating a trend other pop starlets like Xtina, Britney, and Jessica will follow years later.

Fantasy made me a fan. This song was HUGE in europe. IMO the remix started the merging of pop/hip-hop/R&B revolution.
both songs are masterpieces

My older sister loved this song back in the day. She would blast it loud through my house when she was cleaning.
I also loved that she sampled Genius of Love. And the remix is awesome too!

This is one of my all-time favorite Mariah songs! I just loved it! The use of "Genius Of Love" gave it a fun element.
I didn't realize that the song had such a dark "background" as Orange Clouds pointed out.
I'll try not to think about that when I listen to the song. :'(
I like both the album version and the remix with ODB. This was one instance where a guest rapper added something really good.
I also loved the David Morales mixes.

This is a classic song. Absolutely among Mariah's best and most important works. I hope she does more songs like this, with a really hot sample and powerful vocal.
And Orange Clouds, did you write that background information about Mariah and the song? They're certainly fun and interesting to read!

Mariah really did set a trend with the fantasy remix....I always like it when critics/journalists reference and appreciate this, because she doesn't get enough credit imo
and the fact that she did it whilst her label was so against it makes it even more impressive

I absolutely agree with everyone. This song was groudbreaking at the time...and i wish she would have continued to be the one setting trends instead of following them, as she has done as of late. Had she not pushed for this release, her label would never had let it happen...good on Mariah! This is a classic

This is one of those rare pop songs that still sounds fresh and current even played alongside the hottest hits of today (16 years after release). Her best work ever and has a longer shelf-life than most of the hits of its time.
