This is such a hilarious song, my fave they've done by far.
"Mary-anne & Wanda were the best of friineds, all through their high-school days..."
The video was great too, featured the girl from Ally McBeal.

I always wondered if Mary-Anne and Wanda was purposely made to sound like marijuana.

It's alright and I do like it, but I like their less kitschy stuff better.

I liked Sons of the Desert's version better although it was never put on an album. They did sue to put the song on the album and stop the Chicks from releasing it as a single but they obviously failed and that led to the boys demise.

Wait a sec, why did they want it? Didn't the chicks co-write it or something? Or was it their song? Do you have more detail here? This sounds interesting.

Dennis Linde wrote the song and the Sons had recorded it for their second album which was never released (but can be found if you look really hard). They had released the single What About You from the album and it flopped. They then released Albuquerque which also failed to chart. The album was pushed back numerous times as no singles got the attention that was needed to release it. The next single was scheduled to be Goodbye Earl but the Dixie Chicks beat them to the punch. I believe the Sons had the song on hold and the Chicks recorded it anyway. The Sons made a big stink over the whole deal but we all know who the winner was. The album was never released and it was almost two years later when Change was released. It also failed to grab anyone's attention other than What I Did Right which made it to the top 20. The boys then split and the lead singer Drew Womack is doing solo stuff on the texas Music charts. For what it's worth the two Sons albums and the Drew Womack's solo albums are three of my favorite all time albums. If you are a country music fan they are must haves and can be found cheap on Amazon. Their first album had the hits Whatever Comes First, Hand of Fate, and Leaving October. Drew does a different version of Leaving October on his solo disc.

I never really heard the "real version" just the Karoke version in some bars. I think that the song is absolutely humourous with a message.

I didn't hear this until at least a year after it was released. I thought it was funny as well as Dennis Franz playing a zombie.

I miss The Dixie Chicks!! Home was one of the absolute best albums for any genre in the 2000s, imo. Taking The Long Way, Fly, and Wide Open Spaces are great too, but Home was just perfect!
Anyways, I liked "Goodbye Earl". Wasn't one of my absolute favorites from them, but a really good song still and the video always cracked me up!

^I know :'( I was really hoping they would release a new album sometime in the next couple years but if that isn't going to happen I guess I can be thankful Natalie has got a new solo album coming out and new Court Yard Hounds music if that happens too!
I'm just disappointed that I still very rarely hear their music on the radio today. Country music was better when they were in it!
