I actually REALLY like and relate to a lot of the sentiment in the verses.
Unfortunately, the chorus is HIDEOUS. It's like they thought it was too 'soft' and so they had to have this big loud angry chorus that totally didn't fit the song, just to show they were still 'rock'. It turned a potentially classic rock ballad into an average and lyrically bizzare hit that i'm sure will be largely forgotten in 10 years time.
The chorus doesn't even seem to relate to the verses. The verses are about his son, how he misses him and how he feels so protective of him, and just wants to love him, then he's off screaming about how this little kid "shoves it in his face" as if he's gonna punch the poor little blighter the next time he sees him.
Anyway, rant over.

How about an opinion on the song to go with those stats? ;)

How about an opinion on the song to go with those stats? ;) I usually think the stats stand for my opinion. I really liked it at the time. It's good. It's their only Top 50 hit on my chart. "Drift & Die" made the Top 5 Bubbling Under, but other than that, they haven't even come close with anything else.

It's pretty good. Peaked at #13 on my chart and finished #86 for 2002, but should've done better as I like it more than its chart run shows.

How is this nostalgia? It's less than two years old.
By the way, I like the song

It spent 12 weeks at #1 and was my #3 song for last year. Still like it.

This was the first song to spend 6 weeks at #1 on my chart. It held or shared the record for most weeks at #1 from January 2002 to March 2003, when "Bring Me to Life" broke the record. It was my #5 song of 2002 despite the fact that it first hit #1 in 2001.
One of the top 20 songs of the new millennium so far.

Yeah, this spent, no exact data, but I think at least 2 weeks at #1 on my chart, and Karoake guy got this pretty early on a comp disc with several already known alt. tracks. so i did this many weeks for karaoke before it made its way into mainstream. great song, this and D&D.
But John, I kinda feel bad because I think I pingeonholed you as totally against this "american garbage" (my quote, not yours) and feel kinda surprised that u like this. Don't mean to sound bitter or anything, well not bitter, but u know. sorry, pleeeze accept me apologies and labor no hard grudges against me.

I remembered hearing this track all the time on the radio... Too bad that "She Hates Me" couldn't top this one IMO...

I liked the song at the time. It went top 5 but now if i hear it I change the station after I shudder Same here, except that if the remote is within arm's reach, I change the station before I shudder... It's absolutely unlistenable now.

It's good, but not great. Maybe in POM standards it is, though.

One of my favorite rock tracks from 2002! It made it to #1 for 3 weeks on my personal chart and spent almost 30 weeks on my chart.

The radio still plays this song as if it was a current hit. It is by far their best song, and easily one of the biggest songs of last year.

This is one song I don't see myself ever getting tired of. I wouldn't be surprised if I still hear it in ten years.

2002 wasn't one of my favorite years in music but this one of the few songs that made me get through that year as far as music went. Great alternative song and its success on CHR/Pop impressed the hell out of me.

Ah. I've got a bit of history with this tune. Good thing memories were meant to fade.

This is surpassed perhaps only by Staind's "It's Been Awhile" in the overplayed-to-the-point-of-no-return category.

This was pretty awful and SHM was even worse. One of the reasons why rock radio sucked so hard a couple of years ago.

The lyrics far surpassed the execution, but overall it's a good song. I don't listen to the radio a lot so it was never burned out for me; I only played it when I wanted to hear it. And I haven't played it in a couple years or so, but now that I've thought of it I might give it a spin soon.

I find this rather average. I prefer "She Hates Me".
idk what I was thinking this is flawless.

I HATED this. The vocals were so whiny.
