Wannabe was the first Spice Girls song I've ever heard. I first heard it one morning, way back in February '97 (via WYOY).
Today, it seems that the Spice Girls are no more. Did they disband for good?

I don't care what anyone says! Everyone secretly liked this song at one point! This song makes me so happy!

I remember thinking the line "zig-a-zig, ahhh" was so suggestive! I felt so naughty singing along with that part. Great song.

I really loved this song when it first came out. I remember first hearing this track in January '97. These girls were everywhere that year.
Looking back, one can say this was the song that started the so-called "pop explosion" of the late '90s in America. It was the Spice Girls that paved the way for all those acts like Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and later 'N Sync, Britney and all the rest...
Jeff, to answer your question, I think they have split up for good, though I don't think I remember hearing official news about it. In any case, there's no way they'll ever see success again, at least not in the US.

They don't plan to make music together anytime soon.
I didn't like this at first. I liked "2 Become 1" and then "Spice Up Your Life" made me a SG fan. After buying "Spice World," I went back to buying "Spice" and loving "Wannabe." Some people said the low sales for "Spice World" was because the two album covers looked the same. In 7th grade, I wrote to Virgin Records and told them the Spice cds were selling low because the girls wore better clothes on "Spice," and they wore ugly clothes on "Spice World." A year later, they sent me a SG postcard asking me to join their fanclub in England! :)
"We got Em in the place who likes it in your face, we got G like MC who likes it on the easy V doesn't come for free, she's a really, and as for me.. HA HA you'll see!"
The girls said they wrote "Wannabe" in 15 minutes.. it was just so fun! In the music video, it looks like it's filmed in one take, but REALLY there are three cuts during distracting moments like when they pull the table cloth out.
I remember Virgin wanted "Love Thing" as the first single (because it sometimes take an act two or three singles before they hit it big) and that "Wannabe"'s video be reshot since the one they had was too cheeky or something. Geri made it clear that "Wannabe" was gonna be their first single.

This was a #1 hit on my chart. My favorite by them, and my #1 of 1997, was "Say You'll Be There".

This broke while I was in Europe over the summer, and I bought the single and brought it back to the US.
All my friends were like 'that crap will never do well over here'...and a few months later the Girls were all over the place.
I was a bigger fan of 'Say You'll Be There' though.

This one was annoying along with "Spice Up Your Life". Funny thing though they had something like 9 straight top 40 hits (all but one going top 10) on my chart starting after this one and it did include "Spice Up Your Life".

OK for what it is, but ultimately their worst single.
'Viva Forever' showed that they were capable of genuine maturity and artistry, and showed the first hints that Melanie C and Emma Bunton were genuinely talented songwriters. Shame that one never scored in America.
As straight up pop songs, '2 Become 1' 'Say You'll be There' and 'Who do you think You Are' were great too.

I charted "Wannabe" but it didn't get very high. ( not sure of the exact peak). I didn't like this song. In fact I think this is their worst single ever. I much prefer "2 Become 1" (there only #1 hit on my chart) and for some reason I really like "Spice Up Your Life"

I like it. This is one of the songs I wish I followed music when it was out.

From 1997 to 1999, I was (sorta) obsessed with the Spice Girls. Since 1999, I've basically forgotten about them.
I have two Spice Girls albums, both released in '97: Spice and Spiceworld. In 1999, the Spice Girls--minus Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell)--released their third album. But I didn't bother buying a copy thereof; my interest in the Spice Girls had dwindled.

sumthins wrong...it took them 9 months to come out with their second album...and 3 years to come out with their third. Hmmm 90s pop at its finest ;) I cant believe they wen 11x platinum. (7x Spice, 4x Spiceworld)....anyone remember the Spiceworld Movie? i saw it

...and 3 years to come out with their third. Hmmm 90s pop at its finest ;) They weren't really interested in it. Each of them with solo projects of their own by then (Mel C and Mel B had an album out, Emma released a single). When "Forever" was released, they didn't even promote it much. Only Victoria and Emma came to the States to do interviews.. they didn't promote it as a group and sing the singles much.

Hmmm 90s pop at its finest ;) The short gap between the first 2 albums was mainly due to the fact that their first album was released much earlier in Europe, whereas the second was released at the same time worldwide.

I remember they were one of the few acts to ever have 2 albums in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time.

The most impressive is Garth Brooks having five albums in the Top 100 at once and I wouldn't be surprised if he had two in the Top 10 at once. Actually the most impressive is the Beatles on the Billboard Hot 100.

I wonder why the title was spelled as one word. I mean, a "wannabe" is someone who immitates someone else. But in the lyrics, they're singing "if you wanna be my lover," as in "want to."

I remembered having trouble identifying Victoria's voice in that song back then... before the release of their music video.

I remembered having trouble identifying Victoria's voice in that song back then... before the release of their music video. Didn't she only sing one background echo in "Wannabe"? My friend and I always looked out for it since Posh was the coolest! :)
