Her 4th and Final hit single, this made #19 on CHR in the wake of 'As I lay me Down's astonishing success.
I like theverses, i LOVE the bridge, but after all that the chorus is a letdown. I hate the way she sings it, and it's kind of anaemic. But overall I like the song. 'Whaler' is a brilliant album.
In the UK, this was never released. We got 'Dont Don't Tell Me No' as the followup to 'AILMD' instead. I think I prefer that. 'AILMD' wasn't much of a hit in the UK though, only #24. Right Beside you was the biggest hit she had, it made #13. 'Damn!' was #14 and 'Don't Don't tell me no' stalled at #36.

In the lyrics in the booklet to my copy of 'Whaler' it says the bridge goes "You fucked with my head, You fucked with the dead, now i'm gonna fuck with you". But the actual song is the same as the radio version, where the word 'Fuck' is replaced by 'Mess'. Is there actually a version in existence where she swears?

This is probably among my top 5 favorite Sophie songs. The lyrics are really sad, if you read them carefully. The music is kind of happy and upbeat but the song's subject matter is dark.
There is a version of the song where she says "fuck." I have it somewhere. It may be a demo version or something included on a single or something like that.

I haven't heard it since it was a current and the album version, while good isn't quite AS good. Anyone notice how the lyrics in the booklet use the f-word but the song on the CD doesn't? Maybe the CD was re-released at some point in 1994 or 1995 and that song was edited but the booklet lyrics weren't? "You f--ked with my head, you f--ked with the dead, but now I'm gonna f--k with you." The word was "mess" for both versions of the song.
On my MT40 chart, 'Don't Don't Tell Me No' (which was re-titled to just 'Don't Tell Me No') and 'My Home Is In Your Jungle' both made the Top 10 along with the other 3 official releases from 'Whaler' in 1996/97 after I bought the CD.**edited to say that I didn't read the whole topic before my post. oops! Aw well! Great song!

It's OK, but "Right Beside You" will always be my favorite Sophie song. :)
BTW, she had one more song in 2001. It was only on the AC chart. It was called "Walking In My Blue Jeans."
