w/e. Avril was original.. when she came out there was no one else like her. and even if she isn't original.. she's more original than people like christina, brittany, pink, and kelly who just follow generic formulas. There was nothing like Girlfriend out.. and it became a hit. Songs like Breakaway and U+UR Hand were all over.. so its not like a surprise that they became hit.. they weren't/aren't original. You can't say artists like P!nk and Kelly aren't original. Try This and My December are VERY original. When Avril came out, no there weren't any punk rock girls out there. The only pop rocker chick out there was P!nk. P!nk and Kelly don't always follow generic formulas. So you can't state that.

nobody is original on top 40 radio. they follow certain formula, otherwise radio wont play them. Well no one played P!nk during Try This and no one is playing Kelly during MD cause those eras were pretty original. I agree, no one is 100% original, but a lot of artists do have original songs out there.

Avril is an original because no one else delivers a song like she does. In other words, its her vocalizations that are original. When I first heard "When You're Gone" on the radio, I instantly knew it was Avril, even though I think the song sounds like a zillion others in and of itself.
She's unique because no one delivers a song quite the way she does. She's at her best when she's spunky and sassy and fun, it fits her perfectly, and is probably why this last album of hers is doing so well.
Pink is unique too, but more for her image which is more streetwise than Avril's. Avril comes across as the bad girl-next-door gone suburban-punk and its all silly fun and debatable as a genuine image, but its when you hear her sing you 'get' why she's so successful, because she's really really good! (I don't want to make this a Pink thread, but in contrast, Pink comes across as a genuine bad girl you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, haha. However, you WOULD want to 'get the party started' with her songs! lol).

everyone's vocals are original nowadays when it comes to female mainstream artists. i know its Rihanna, I know its Pink, I know its Amy, I know its Beyonce, I know its Christina, I know its Kelly, I know its Dido, I know its Mariah, etc. there are A LOT of good "original in that sense" artists right now and I think thats a good thing. Anyways, back to the song, I think the delivery is good and she deserves a Top 10 for just a good song. Its not amazing by any means but its a song I much rather listen to than some of the crap out there. It may not be original but thats not bad and it shouldnt ruin how good the song is.

^ LMFAO at all the big artists you name...and then Dido. Umm Dido is massive worldwide. Avril appeared on Jo Whiley's live lounge on Radio 1 and did 'When You're Gone' and covered' The Scientist'. When You're GoneThe ScientistBeautiful, beautiful! Her vocals always shine on acoustic performances. :)

If "Umbrella" could contend for a #1 spot with its lyrics, then this should (easily).

(Sorry to disagree with you, man) :) "Umbrella" was a completely original-sounding song, though - and a completely unique metaphor I just saw the video for "When You're Gone" this morning, and it's a complete rip-off (the video, not the song) of 3 Doors Down "When I'm Gone" - Avril's song is like a combination of the CONCEPTS of "When I'm Gone" and "Here Without You" both of which were HUGE HITS - that's why I don't think this song will be that big - I think it's early rise is due to almost every station adding it, not stations putting it in heavy rotation This still sounds like a "New Kids On The Block" song to me

Wow I just did not see an Avril fan call 'Girlfriend' an original and said Kelly follows the generic formula lol....
Oooh the irony - that is all lol, I'll let that be - Its too comical to say anything more.

I regret jumping on this song too soon. I'm already tired of it and that has never happened with me and an Avril Lavigne song. It's definitely not her best song afterall...at least not in my book.

The best part of the song IMO is the piano intro and ending - the lyrics on the bridge get ridiculously like NKOTB - can't Avril say she needs him and misses him in more poetic ways? She's done it in the past I think Evan and Jaron's "The Distance" expresses this same emotion so much better

To the deluded Avril fans, Mizzundastood was released at the very beginning of 02... with pop/rock numbers like Just Like A Pill, Don't Let Me Get Me and the teen angst Family Portrait. Let Go was released well after Mizz so if you want to talk about imitators, lets talk Avril.

Why? because it's true. Kelly and avril jacked her style. it never would have worked had Pink not re-opened that door to mainstream.

Michelle Branch came out in 2001 so I can argue too that she opened up the pop/rock route for pop radio?
So all of a sudden Pink fans are claming the credits and Avril & Kelly are copying her? Pop/rock has already existed long before Pink changed her style. Rock bands having a pop sound are common before Pink came out. Remember 'Here Without You' & 'Hanging By A Moment', or those numerous hits Matchbox 20 spawned?
It's not like pop/rock was dead until Pink brought it back. It's always there.
