It was the "averaging less than 7000" that tipped me off. I've seen that phrase repeatedly mentioned by potter and/or other potterettes in other boards when criticizing Carrie. Can't always rely on "SH(ania)" and "transcend" to activate the radar. There are key phrases too!
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the 9 albums that qualified under the old criterion of at-least-300,000 but I'm under time and need-for-sleep constraints. Anyone willing to help? Either way, leila will come along again later with the answer to such a useless question. :)

I think Carrie definitely deserved a nomination for EOTY. She's not to the point of winning the award IMO but she's as close as a female would be. Sugarland trumps her from a performance standpoint but ticket and record sales as well as radio airplay clearly favor Carrie.

Nine albums eligible for ACM:
Kenny Chesney, Lucky Old Sun Alan Jackson, Good Time Toby Keith, That Don't Make Me a Bad Guy Lady Antebellum, Lady Antebellum James Otto, Sunset Man Darius Rucker, Learn to Live George Strait, Troubadour Sugarland, Love on the Inside Taylor Swift, Fearless
Is there a prize?

Even though I'm a biased Carrie fan I'm kinda surprised "Just A Dream" didn't get a single or song nomination! i'm not biased...but i am also shocked about no song of the year nod for "Just a Dream". also... - where is Alan Jackson after the two big #1 hits he had last year?
- where is Martina Mcbride? I know she didn't have the biggest year, but female artist of the year isn't exactly tough to get nominated in...
- where are Rascal Flatts? I i think it is apparent that they are on their way down now. i don't know the politics of it, but i think they must have made a lot of people mad at them, and they seem to be in the Faith Hill/Tim Mcgraw "doghouse" now lol.
- who will win female artist of the year - Taylor or Carrie? That category is gonna be close this year for the first time in a while...I think Carrie still pulls it out...although by CMA time it could be Taylor.

I think you hit the nail on the head right there. It is surprising not to see her in the field. But when you look at it objectively, she didn't have any big chart hits. "For These Times" hit #35 (I can't remember if it peaked in early 2008 or late 2007). "Ride" and "Blue Christmas" were just climbing the charts at the end of the year. Her Live In Concert release didn't make a big dent on the charts either. I don't know off the top of my head how many concert dates she had last year. But if you add up all the criteria, it doesn't seem like there's enough there on the resume to get nominated this year.

I actually don't think it's that close at all. I'd be really surprised if Carrie doesn't win it this year. She had over 1 million fans in attendance at her concerts last year. That's probably what put her over the top in getting a nom in the EOTY category. Since Taylor is touring in 2009 and Carrie isn't, I agree that come CMA time it could be time for Taylor. But it'll be interesting to see how much emphasis the CMA voters put on vocals since the likes of Shania, Garth, Kenny, etc, have never won the award (although Garth and Kenny have taken home the award on the ACM side).

this who i think should get an Album Of The Year nomination.
Taylor Swift "Fearless" Lady Antebellum "Lady Antebellum" Sugarland "Love On The Inside" Josh Gracin "We Weren't Crazy" Kellie Pickler "Kellie Pickler"
but these are the ones i think will get nominated
Jamey Johnson "That Lonesome Song" Lee Ann Womack "Call Me Crazy" Sugarland "Love On The Inside" Lady Antebellum "Lady Antebellum" Kenny Chesney "Lucky Old Sun" George Strait "Troubadour"
5 of those 6 will be the albums IMO. but we may see Heidi Newfield get an AOTY nomination. it looks very possible after her other shocking nominations. i just hope Sugarland and especially Lady Antebellum get an AOTY nomination

I think the nominations are fairly decent this year. I'm surprised by all of Heidi Newfield's nominations, but good for her. There were others I thought we'd see in the Female Vocalist category ahead of her, but I guess they were looking for 'new blood'.
Alan Jackson's omissions are surprising. While I haven't liked his recent singles all that much, they were all successful, and the Good Time album seems to be well-resepected from a critical standpoint.
As far as Album of the Year, I would like to see Sugarland, Kenny Chesney and Lee Ann Womack nominated (and I think each will be). The remaining two spots will probably go to some combination of George Strait, Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson, Heidi Newfield, Lady Antebellum or Toby Keith.

Shania never won the category? Wow I'm surprised...were they giving it to Faith Hill, and then giving Shania the Entertainer Award - similar to what's been happening with Brad/Kenny? Yeah i agree that Carrie will win at the ACM's, and I think Taylor will win it at the CMA awards - due to red hot singles, albums, and most likely her headlining tour.

but Taylor can't sing like Carrie. that is why Shania never won the award. because she can't sing like Faith. even if Shania and Taylor have had better sales than Faith & Carrie, the industry bases the awards more on vocals than success.
now i am not saying Taylor will never win, but i dont think she stands much of a chance with Carrie, Miranda, Heidi, Lee Ann in her category. even if she sells more than them.

I'm not about to get in the middle of any taylor/carrie talent arguments...
Would Martina's "Ride" count at all towards the nominations?

I would hope songwriting/artistry/talent would also be a part of the criteria. Even though I agree that Carrie is hands down the better vocalist, I would rather see Taylor Swift split her spleen when they announced her name instead of watching another Oscar audition from Carrie. I really appreciate the talent found in Taylor Swift, and I hope she racks up some prestigious awards in her career to decorate the dashboard of her future love's pickup truck.

i'd like to see Taylor win "Album Of The Year" or "Song/Single of the Year". i think she would be more fitting to win those. because it would be focused more on her songwriting, and that is what she is amazing at. Top Female Vocalist really should go to the best singer, or it should be re-named.

i hope that lee ann's nomination will merit her a performance slot of the very beautiful "last call".
i also wanna hear leanne sing what i cannot change live. does the humanitarian awardee also get a performance slot? it was the flatts last year, right? and they performed. but that maybe bec theyre also nominated for other awards.

I'm not about to get in the middle of any taylor/carrie talent arguments... This isn't a Taylor/Carrie talent argument. This is a discussion on the merit of the award. (Believe me, I absolutely hate it when Carrie & Taylor fans invade a topic and it deteriorates into dork recess. I purposely stay out of Taylor threads and always encourage my fellow Carrie fans to do the same, especially if they're not going to behave themselves). Anyways, there's a reason why Kenny always wins EOTY but can't win CMA Male Vocalist. Vocals aren't his strength. It'll be interesting to see what happens with CMA Female Vocalist this fall. Will the voters tab Taylor or not? I don't know. That suspense will make it really interesting.

While I think Taylor would certainly be deserving of the Female Vocalist at the CMAs because of her commercial success, I really just can't picture the PTB at the CMAs awarding her because of her lackluster live performances and her transition into pop radio. Later in the year she is remixing all of her songs for a pop album to be distributed worldwide, and everyone knows Nashville's preferences...
This is not a post criticizing Taylor; I tried to explain my reasoning as best as possible

Congrats to all the nominees.. I think Carrie has a shot at EOTY, which would be fantastic. I think Taylor has a shot at AOTY and VOTY, but like others have stated, she doesn't have the chops to take home FVOTY (Carrie will probably take that one home for the third time). I would not be surprised to see her nominated for EOTY in the near future, but she'd never win.

I'm going to start by making a point...or a plea. One of the things that has made the awards show threads tiresome is the Carrie-Taylor back & forth -- not just because it gets circular, antagonistic and there's typically very little new said, but also and perhaps more so because talk of those two seems to overwhelm discussion of everyone else who has a presence at the awards shows. So I'm going to ask that you folks keep that in mind. There are many other artists nominated for the ACMs, so please make an effort to keep your posts balanced in their tone and also their coverage. Thanks. I'm so proud of LeAnn. I hope this means she will finally perform "What I Cannot Change" that night. I'm with you and what in really hoping this happens, as well. Does anyone remember if Vince performed at the ACMs when he was honored with this award in 2006? I'm drawing a blank on whether or not he did. I do remember him giving his award to a beautiful young girl he had met through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Taylor's team is gunning hard for an EotY nod at the CMAs...I remember last year, Big Machine bought a For Your Consideration ad in Country Aircheck for Taylor in June urging folks to vote for her in that category (among others). And the press release announcing her 2009 tour made sure to highlight what a -SHOW- it will be...I remember details like multiple costume changes, three acts, a set that includes a castle, and Taylor playing both guitar and piano during the show being mentioned. Good positioning, and it could well work, because it seems that what has been Rascal Flatts' slot in the EotY category is now up for grabs. The CMA eligibility period for 2009 will have run from 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009, so that will include headlining tours from last year's CMA EotY nominees Sugarland (from autumn 2008), the autumn leg of Carrie's 2008 headlining tour and a good portion of Taylor's headlining tour in 2009. I think the freshness of Taylor's tour in voters' minds, coupled with what I'm sure will be great showmanship and visuals at her concerts and what I expect will be big-time crowds, will probably give her an edge for that 5th slot. But back to the ACMs... joey2002, while "Ride" didn't peak in 2008 (obviously), I don't think it went unnoticed as part of Martina's 2008 portfolio. There is a small part of me that wonders whether it somehow hurt Martina's candidacy that she skipped the ACMs last year. No way of proving/disproving that one, though, so it's idle speculation on my part. Lee Ann was presumably aided by the fact that she released a new studio album last year, even if it hasn't sold much. Speaking of Lee Ann, I'm hoping she makes Album of the Year, as well. I'm expecting to see Jamey Johnson, Sugarland, George and Taylor in the Album of the Year category ( matt = carriefan0209, I'm almost positive CR is not eligible this year because it didn't peak commercially in 2008). Not sure who to expect in the 5th slot...I would say Alan, except he was shut out everywhere. Maybe Toby, maybe Kenny, but like I said, preferably Lee Ann. Blake, thanks for the list of nine albums that would have been eligible had the ACMs maintained their eligibility criteria. It kind of blows my mind that they didn't notice the problem until it was too late to announce the AotY nods with the rest of the nominations. I wonder if it took your blog entry at Country Universe to wake them up? ;)

Yeah, thats all i was trying to say...we'll just have to wait and see what happens! Anything can happen in any category, like how many people predicted the "Soggy Bottom Boys" would take home Single Of The Year back in 2001? :o

well maybe since alan is shut out, theyll give him a pity token nom for album. not saying he'd only get in bec of pity as his album is solid, but not just as magnificent as like red on rose.
since i was on that thought, i actually appreciated them delaying album noms and recognizng their criteria doesnt apply in this market anymore and it excludes lots of amazing work the past yr. but, it also opens the case of giving the nom to someone who doesnt have a single nom yet, just for the sake of havng that artist get a nom. since all the other nominees in all categories have been released, its easy to see who got shut out and therefore could be "helped" by a delayed announcement of the album nom.
with the heidi newfield love at the acm's, i wonder if this bodes well for her for cma's. either way, im glad to see a new woman break through.

I'm also very happy that the ACM folks have decided to modify the qualifications for AOTY nominees.
That sales rule is so arbitrary, and especially in an era where the overwhelming majority of country music sales are CD sales (over 70% at Amazon.com and over 90% overall), vs. iTunes (70% of which are singles).
I was also surprised that 'Small Town Southern Man' wasn't nominated for anything, but I'm really delighted that Jamey Johnson & Lee Ann Womack were recognized for two of the year's very best CDs, even if today's country radio appears to be out to lunch in too many ways to mention.

I don't think it's quite valid to use Shania as an example for why Taylor would not win a female vocalist award.
As far as vocals, Gretchen Wilson won a female vocalist award and in sbp17's mind, a good voice she does not have.
As far as pop crossover, I'm not sure country radio is as anti-pop crossover now as it was with Shania.
Also, Taylor's a kid so it's harder to give her a cold shoulder. (Though being a kid would probably also be a contributing factor to why she won't hasn't won this award.) I can't recall if it's the chicken or the egg but Shania's focus was on the fans and not impressing anyone else. Either she chose to sort of remove herself from the Nashville scene or she was forced out of it or a little of both.
So I think there were a variety of reasons why Shania did not a female vocalist award (and, no doubt, her relatively plain vocal delivery probably contributed but was not the sole factor).
Having said all that, I agree that someone else is likely to replace Carrie as winner before Taylor. But Carrie is very fortunate and came along at the right time. There is very, very little female competition commercially and her artistic competition among females are almost so non-existent on country radio that it's particularly difficult to pull off an upset. That's not to take anything from her own artistic merits.
On another note, it will be nice if we see Darius Rucker in the male vocalist category soon.
I also think the nine eligible albums have a good selection to pick from though I am glad they are considering their criteria but I think it's silly to do so after the nominations are announced.

What's so amazing is that the Academy of Country Music amended their rules on December 19, 2008, just in time for the first round of nominations, but failed to touch the criteria for Album. The Album sales are posted here every week (thanks---always a time saver), so many of us surely recognized how few albums reached that treshold (300,000 copies).
Any sales rule needs to be abolished; those statistics should be used to formulate the nominee list, but not as the be-all, end-all. This tardy judgment call on the ACM's part is puzzling because of the Single nominees I'd mentioned before. What if they demanded that all Single/Song nominees needed to be top five singles? That eliminates "In Color," "Gunpowder and Lead," "Johnny and June" and "Famous in a Small Town" in recent years, and classics such as "Believe" (2005 nominee), "Choices" (1999 nominee) and "Blue" (1996 winner).
I would love to take credit for setting the ACM straight, but I'm just a pebble in the pond. I expect Sugarland, Swift, Strait, Jackson and Johnson. I know many people have their hopes up for Womack or Loveless to sneak in, but too many radio and concert promoters are in the voting academy to make that happen. Those two ladies were low-profile commercially this year, and unfortunately, that matters in the minds of the major awards organizations. Any awards results should be taken with a grain of salt, and the ACM is the guiltiest party of them all. Allowing your major award---Entertainer---to be judged by an undisclosed voting combination of industry members and fans cheapens the whole prize, regardless of who wins it.
That is some interesting info about Swift's bid for CMA Entertainer. I feel it will fall short; the good ol' boys club has yet to even tab Underwood in that category, and I just don't think they'll allow a 19-year-old girl into the field.
