Anyone can cover a song as long as they get the proper permission. Alanis and Glen Ballard wrote the song so she'd be quite aware of this and obviously had no problem letting Beyonce AND Britney sing it at their concerts. The people who OWN the song make the decisions. So be mad at them that they let Britney sing the song if you must raise some sort of hell lol. Not Britney's fault she asked and got what she wanted. I'm under the impression that you can sing any song you want live, however if you want to record the song that's when you need to ask for permission to cover and distribute said recording.

Whoever is the promoter of Britney's show would be required to pay the music license fees associated with the performance. This would include Britney singing songs she has recorded herself.

I'm not trying to start drama, but I think Britney did a better job. Beyonce's voice doesn't fit the song, imo. The entire performance she shakes her weave, and has a seizure on the floor. Her voice seems emotionless on the song as well. I felt the anger in Brit's voice. It was just Britney and her mic. There was no stage magic, half-ass dancing, or walking in sync s**t. It was just Britney. I agree with you. BeyoncΓ© had the better vocals, nobody can argue that but Britney captured all the bitterness of "You Oughta Know" which made the performance more credible and she actually sounded good, better than everyone expected.

I do think Britney's version translates better, just because Beyonce has an even less rock friendly voice then Britney though. Beyonce sounds at home when she is doing R and B, Soul and Gospel songs anyway it just works better with her sound and tone. Britney just has more freedom in the rock area though she is far from being someone like say P!nk. Britney's rock voice kind of reminds me of a weaker version of Cyndi Lauper's. It has that same nasal-angry/pleading rasp kind of yelp sound to it that just works better in Rock songs like these. I agree with this. I'm not surprised people are jumping on this thread to stop any kind of praise for this performance, when there really isn't much to get so heated about. Assuming she did sing live, which it seems she did, she sang the song well. Whether it was better or worse than Alanis/Beyonce (IMO, it would be no/yes) isn't that big of a deal. Good job to Britney for tackling a song like that and doing so with confidence and competence.

I'm so proud of her for covering YOK! She did amazing. I'm so glad that she just stood there and actually SINGED IT. No one would have seen that coming from Britney Spears! Looks like shes getting her confidence back. I hope she continues making this progress.
Oh and I hope she and/or team is aware of the extremely positive feedback its gotten! And hopefully she'll sing live more and take more chances.

Just got done referring a bunch of posts from today over to the admins for warnings. Those of you who took or threw out bait to fight a fan war via artist comparison or attacks on another fanbase really should know better.

Britney's performance was flawless. It's %100 live, she forgot some lines and was late at some points. I hope she sings this on my show. & seriously, Britney and Beyonce did great, why compare? My God.

I'm really impressed by her live vocals. It just shows that if given the right song she can sound decent. That was perfect for her, exactly in her range.

"You Oughta Know" is a perfect fit. I was surprised at how well she did it. I would like a studio version of it, but as a bonus or b-side, not as a single or anything like that. I was a big fan of the Alanis original.

From Perez: We know it's only September, but Britney is gifting all of us with the best early Christmas present ever!!!! Brit Brit will be releasing Revised: The Singles Collection in November 2009, which will be a double disc release of re-recorded, remixed and revised versions of 18 of Spears' singles!!!! Love it love it LOVE IT! According to official reports, the album will have a "haunted" theme and feature photos of Brit Brit "bound by ropes in chains in an underwater abyss, fighting through the murky darkness to reach the surface." So seksi!!! Revised will showcase the production talents of Moby, Bloodshy & Avant, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Danja, just to name a few. Check out the track listing below: Disc 1: 1. Baby One More Time 2. Sometimes 3. Oops!β¦ I Did It Again 4. Lucky 5. Stronger 6. I'm A Slave 4 U 7. Overprotected 8. I'm Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman 9. Do Somethin' 10. Nine 1 1 (Hidden) Disc 2: 1. Me Against the Music 2. Toxic 3. Everytime (Acoustic) 4. Gimme More 5. Piece Of Me 6. Break The Ice 7. Womanizer 8. Circus 9. If U Seek Amy 10. Eclipse (Hidden) Thoughts???? perezhilton.com/2009-09-07-britney-repackaged-for-the-holidays

What official reports, Perez? You didn't link to anything! Jordan's imagination is not an official report.

OMG! Someone tell me this I'm having a nightmare. She just violated a timeless classic by my favorite artist. She should stay focued with her circus and leave Alanis alone. I am truly nauseous.

That's the first time I've heard her sing live in years. She doesn't sound as bad as I thought she would, actually.

It's the first time any one has heard her sing live in years the last time she sang live was back in 2004 during the Onyx Hotel Tour and from that clip her voice is a lot stronger now then what is was back then. Back then it was off key and shakey at times now though she has a lot more control and a lot more strength.

I love how she's capable of conveying the emotions of Alanis's version. It shows that she truly GETS what's the song about. After all, she's gone through it with K-Fed and what not.
