Word cannot express how much I loved this song when I first heard it. I remember being obsessed with this song, once I heard it back in January of 05'. I saw the music video on TRL and I just fell in love with it, this song is easily one of my favorite songs of 2005. The song was nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group" but lost out to Maroon 5 that year-which I believe is a joke personally. The song is their biggest hit.
Chart stats:
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 #10 CHR/Top 40 #10 (spent 20 weeks on the chart) Year End Billboard of 2005 #16 The Killers have technically made better songs since this was released in terms of sound this isn't their most innovative or daring track and this also there probably are better songs that they have written at least from a poetic stand point but this is pretty much their culmination point for me. I love everything about the track. The clever lyrics, the irresistible (and wordy!) chorus, Flowers vocal performance the rock-synth sound, etc. the stars really aligned for this track. How I wish I could love a rock track as much as I loved this.
I must say that I thought the video was really quite striking as well. It was directed by Sophie Muller was it not? It has her signature trade mark for visuals and imagery. The video is very colorful and very well shot from the lighting, to the costumes to the make up. Also loved the storyline between Flowers and the love interest who I always thought was quite hauntingly beautiful in a Moulin Rouge sort of way. You can also see how hurt Brandon feels in the video, it's palpable. The love story really was well interpreted you can see the excitement they have to rush off and sneak away with each other, their intimate scenes at the end of the video and finally her illness/sickness where she ends up falling over. Very poignant. I am a sucker for a good love story/plot and this was one of the most memorable clip I have seen in a while even five-four years later.

I agree with you. I think Mr. Brightside is the song The Killers will be best remembered for. I'd heard Somebody Told Me, etc. The video was what hooked me.

Some back story on the song:
The song was written by lead vocalist Brandon Flowers and guitarist Dave Keuning and was one of the first songs written by the band, originating from a cassette given to Flowers by Keuning, to which Flowers penned the lyrics. The song was written about Flowers’ ex-girlfriend who was cheating on him.

Words cannot express how much I love this song One of the best Alternative songs of the decade. There's not a single aspect I don't love about it. The lyrics are clever and funny, the bass line is out of this world. I don't remember it being a massive hit when it was first released, but I wouldn't hesitate to call it this decade's "Don't Stop Believing" now... everyone between the ages of about 18 and 35 knows all the words. A classic.

The Killers may not have had some of the biggest hits of this decade, but they will have some songs that live on. This is an example, and I think "When You Were Young," "All These Things that I've Done," and "Somebody Told Me," will stand the test of time and remain popular.

I'd say it's somewhere between #25 and #50 as far as my favorite songs of the decade, but the video is easily in my top 5 if not #1 (I don't keep track of videos as meticulously as I do songs). If they gave out Oscars for music video performances, Brandon Flowers definitely would've definitely won one. As far as song/video combinations go, I can't think of a better one in the 2000s so far for me. I wouldn't hesitate to call it this decade's "Don't Stop Believing" now... everyone between the ages of about 18 and 35 knows all the words. Yeah, I've noticed this too.

I really like this one. Don't care a lot about them, but this is definitively one of the best songs on the decade. The video was great too.

This song definitely has a spot on my favourite songs of the decade, which is a chart I plan on making pretty soon. Maybe a Top 100 or 200, depending on how many amazing songs I can't choose from.
When I finally got the lyrics to the song after a few listens, it brought tears to my eyes because it reminded me so much of the summer beforehand and how I felt night after night. It was striking and I think it's because of my immense relating to the song that I felt so close to it. I also really love the remix as well. Both top notch!

Not bad--but they had many better--like the oft mentioned Somebody Told Me, When You Were Young, Human, All These Things That I've Done, Runaways, Shadowplay, Bones, and my personal fave Read my Mind.

Love this and the whole 'Hot Fuss' album. This is still one of my favourite songs. It's held up incredibly well compared to other singles from the same time.

I love it. It's probably my favorite of theirs overall, but "Read My Mind" and "Human" are close behind.

I just love this song. Also, the fact that it repeats the lyrics twice because of slacking on writing...yet STILL come off as awesome, is what makes this a classic. It takes A LOT to have a song accomplish that

This isn't my favorite from them, but I do like it and it's pretty much a solid classic by now. Mark this as one which could have multiple resurgences over the years due to media use.

I still love this and play it from time to time but it's not my favorite from them. It is my favorite single off of that album though.

Easily considered a classic alternative song at this point. Instantly recognizable to people my age. Everybody knows every word. This was huge for people my age.

One of the most overrated rock/emo songs of the 2000s. Still not a bad song, but not all that special though, it's decent I guess.

The fact that this reached as high as it did on the Hot 100...
Song used to annoy me until I watched The Holiday - I LOVE that film - and it magically clicked for me. Still prefer "Somebody Told Me" of their biggest hits though.

Listen, I love this song just as much as anyone else... but hearing it ad nauseam at karaoke killed it for me. Too many people were comfortable with the front end and then the chorus kicked in and the STRAIN got all too real. So did the PITCHY.
Anyway, not my favorite Killers song, but a bona fide classic staple of this life, no doubt.
