Kelly Clarkson's voice in the spotlight in no-frills tourBy Lauren Carter Kelly Clarkson is making a strong case for the scaled-back tour. Clarkson's show at Agganis Arena last night featured little in the way of flash besides the sparkles on her shirt and bell-bottoms. There were no trapeze artists or midget jugglers, no onstage explosives or elaborate stage decorations. Her two backup singers and nine-piece band - which included a three-piece horn section and violinist - stood on functional silver platforms, backed only by bright lights. There were no multiple wardrobe changes (just one before the encore), and certainly no intricate wardrobes. Clarkson left most of the work up to her voice. A bluesy a cappella midway through her 90-minute set proved that for anyone who hadn't been listening closely, Clarkson's pipes place her in the upper echelon of vocalists, and perhaps explain why she doesn't resort to any of the glitz and trickery that help some artists camouflage their deficiencies. It's been seven years since Clarkson won the first season of "American Idol," and in the pop world, that's nearly a lifetime. Since snatching the crown on the country's official talent show, she's released four albums and amassed a string of hits. Last night, the 27-year-old opened with the title track off her new album, "All I Ever Wanted," also the name of her tour. It was a set defined as much by a mix of soul, pop, rock - and briefly, country - as her down-home Texas charm. "It is freaking hot in here," Clarkson said a few songs in. "If I had a hotter body I'd just do the show naked, I swear to God!" Well, she was working hard. Among the night's covers were Alanis Morissette's "That I Would Be Good," which Clarkson made her own, and The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" during the encore. Clarkson shone on ballads "Behind These Hazel Eyes," "Because of You" and a beautiful "Breakaway," which had the nearly sold-out crowd swaying and waving their arms in rapture. Though Clarkson can pull off blues to balladry, she seems best-suited for soaring pop-rock with plenty of synth and angst, "Never Again" and "If I Can't Have You" chief among them. Opener Eric Hutchinson provided a mix of coffeehouse singer-songwriter fare and danceable pop-funk that briefly called up images of Stevie Wonder. www.bostonherald.comwww.bostonherald.com/entertainment/music/general/view/20091014kelly_clarksons_voice_in_the_spotlight_in_no-frills_tour/srvc=home&position=recent

Didn't mean to reopen that can of worms. I was listening to the downloaded audio of the Hammerstein show from here kellbclarkson.blogspot.com/2009/10/hammerstein-ballroom-ny-audio-cd.htmland there's gotta be a half dozen songs there that are the best performances yet of particular songs - some are the new additions (Ready, Impossible, Seven Nation Army) but I definitely think it was her best live performances of IDNHU and AIEW, and Never Again rivals the version she did at the show in Oklahoma. Wow what awesome audio!!

OK so last night's show was awesome! Just to get this out of the way, I personally thought Kelly looked bigger than she did during GMA, but I think it was the outfit, during the encore she changed into a black dress and looked much better.
ANYWAY on to the show: the setlist was near perfect, I would've enjoyed some more album cuts, like Addicted or maybe Gone, but she did sing a large portion of AIEW so that was great, to get to hear that live for the first time. Her voice was, in all honesty, the BEST I have EVER heard her sing. SO clear, SO powerful, she really went for it. She belted basically all three choruses of NA, Breakaway was so insipirational, BOY obviously, AG seemmed almost effortless for her, and the new version she does now is near perfect, the drums that kick in really add to the power of the song. Basically a GREAT show, she keeps getting better! I even got eye contact--twice! Can't wait to see her again, though I have no idea when that will be.

When people say..."man she looks fat!", that's not obsessing over her weight. But when people moan and justify and say "so what" and "she's 27 now"...that's far more obsessive. Anyway, yeah, let's drop it. Hyper sensitive subject.

Like I said, sorry for re-opening that, I noticed because it was on my mind after the flame war in that ridiculous "who needs a makeover" thread. Which in retrospect was a thread I probably should just have just ignored in the first place. Anyway, good sales bump for the album, it seems like sometimes the album and singles sales are see-sawing. As for the tour, I didn't think it was possible for Kelly to take it up a notch after the summer fair shows, but she really has. The one thing we have not seen is much information about how her tickets are selling, but it seems like the shows on the fall tour have mostly been pretty packed houses so far.

Last night was about 90% full I'd say, only the back really had empty seats. Glad to see a bump in album sales, hopefully all this great press and word of mouth can get the album back into people's minds. I remeber during BA, aside from SUBG, she really gained a lot of credibility through her reputation for being so great live.

i have a feeling AG is gonna really help the album to stay in or around 6k+ weekly for a while(all this BEFORE the holiday season) AG, not IDNHU is the kind of song that sell an album. I was very skeptical months ago, but once all is said and done, this album def. has a shot at surpassing M.D. and getting platinum sales.

Don't worry she will outsell MD...in week 31, MD was selling 2.000 copies and here we are selling 6000+..the gap between the albums in week 31 is 23000 copies est. This is great..because 5 weeks ago it was 38 000 copies...so over the holidays the album will prob sell 60-70 000 copies which is great!!
Comparison: Week #31 Thankful was at #128 with 1.6+ million sold total Breakaway was at #8 (62000+) with 2.55+ million sold My December was of top 200 (2.000) with 746.000 copies AIEW is at position #94 (6.117 copies) 723.000 copies sold Just think we got Nov and Dec sales and then hopefully some award shows and the success of AG will start to help i hope soon...
No more worries about this outselling MD people..i promise it will!

That's great about the increase in sales! Yay! And that was a great article Nealy posted, thanks!
Oh, and FOCUS, if you read this before your show.......
HAVE A FREAKIN FANTASTIC TIME~~I know you will, but just wanted to say it!
And for those in the Chicago area, the Mix 101.9 is having a contest to win tickets for an exclusive acoustic set w/Kelly on Monday, Oct. 26 from 4-6 pm.....every day till Oct. 26 3 chances to win, be caller 25 and you win tickets.
It sounds like it would be so cool....busy though, she has a show the night before and then the Chicago show on Tuesday. I wonder if she will also attend the J/K show on Monday night as well, like she did in Boston, lots of activity!

the show at hammerstein was absolutely phenomenal, and everyone was going nuts. got a great picture of reba mcentire on the balcony like ten feet from me too:) i'd rather have heard a few more of her songs and less covers, but "that i would be good" cover was just devastatingly good. rivaled alanis' version.

Lol, I feel like I've talked about the 4th single for hundreds of times, between here and on the Express.
I'm surprised Kelly hasn't said anything about the 4th single yet. I know we've still got a ways to go until it's released, but she talked about AG and IDNHU being singles months before they were released. Maybe they are re-releasing after all.

Have we heard this track before? It pops up in a few places as "Mr Wonderful by Kelly Clarkson" but honestly it doesn't sound a lot like Kelly, not even like a song like "Can We Go Back" that's done in the same style...if this is her, it has to be pretty early and she's straining a bit to do the lower, harder sound that comes naturally to her now.
