Interesting that Rolling Stone includes rappers on their list and not country artists. I'm not sure there's a well-thought-out justification for that. As a magazine traditionally devoted to rock and its relatives, I could see including both or neither, but I guess they feel that rap has more pop and youth appeal. I do wonder why they left Kid Rock off the list of choices. I'm not sure how reliable this list is and it seems to be US-only sales (Kelly's sold over 20 million albums this decade worldwide), but Eminem seems to have sold the most records domestically in the 2000s new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/34074/chart-watch-extra-the-top-20-album-sellers-of-the-2000s/Despite the late start, Kelly's released 4 studio albums this decade, compared to - picking a few of the bigger names off the list - 3 for U2, 3 for Beyonce as a solo artist (plus two Destiny's Child albums), 4 for Coldplay, 2 for Timberlake as a solo artist (plus two N'Sync albums), 4 for BEP (plus one Fergie solo album), 4 for Kanye, 3 for Green Day, 4 for Springsteen, 4 for Kings of Leon, and 9 for Jack White (5 White Stripes albums, 3 Raconteurs albums, 1 Dead Weather album). ETA: One more thought. Nickelback's not on the list, even though they're one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the decade. Which means, somebody at Rolling Stone said to themselves, "we can't include Nickelback because nobody respects them." And then proceeded to put Kelly on the list. That is progress.

Breakaway really should be the album of the decade. It was massive worldwide. IMO, Beyonce is the leader, as she has been extremely consistent with hit after hit.
The others: Beyonce Kelly Clarkson Coldplay Justin Timberlake Kanye West
And I agree, Wallace. I wonder why country artists (especially Carrie Underwood) were not included. Is there any specific deadline for them to be included (as in, released an album before the middle of the decade?)

I'm guessing the simple answer is, Rolling Stone tries to appeal to rap fans, and doesn't much bother with country fans.

I saw that on the Express last night. That really is big, and I think it makes sense that Kelly is on the list, she is the first American Idol, which one could argue has been the biggest pop culture phenomenon of the decade, and she's been around since 2002---which I had forgotten how long ago that was. I think maybe Carrie has been left off because in terms of songs that evryone knows, she really only has BHC. None of her other songs have universal recognition, whereas Kelly has AT LEAST 3 (BOY, SUBG, and pick any other smash). Carrie also debuted in 2005, so she's only been around for less than half the decade.

www.americanidol.com/news/view/pid/2109/Kelly Clarkson Nominated for Artist of the DecadeThe first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, has been nominated by Rolling Stone for “Artist of the Decade.” Fans can vote for Kelly on the “Rolling Stone Decade End Reader Poll,” which also includes fields to write in your choices for Song of the Decade and Album of the Decade. The balloting runs from now until November 30, 2009. surveys.wennermedia.com/se.ashx?s=04BD76CC7EE4913A So cool! For those interested, the other nominees are... Arcade Fire Beyonce Black Eyed Peas Kelly Clarkson Coldplay Eminem Fall Out Boy Green Day Bob Dylan Conor Oberst Jay Z Jack White Kings of Leon Lil Wayne MIA My Chemical Romance My Morning Jacket Radiohead Bruce Springsteen Justin Timberlake U2 Kanye West Wilco Wow, that is a ridiculously impressively list for Kelly to be on. I am awaiting some folks on here to write "must have been some "stan" that created that list". Oh wait, that list was created by Rolling Stone, lol

I might get into trouble for this, but with Jann Wenner as publisher of RS, and writers on staff such as Matt Taibbi, its not surprising that a genre of music that appeals to a lot of conservatives gets snubbed.
And I am not a huge fan of today's country music. If anything, Carrie's generic stuff should take a back seat to say, Allison Krauss.

I might get into trouble for this, but with Jann Wenner as publisher of RS, and writers on staff such as Matt Taibbi, its not surprising that a genre of music that appeals to a lot of conservatives gets snubbed. That thought crossed my mind, not that all country fans or artists are right-wingers, but I think RS views rap fans as more a natural audience for their magazine than country fans, and the political/cultural gap in the types of fans they attract is part of that. I'm pretty sure the choice of genres is all about who the magazine's target audience is. On another subject, from the worldwide album sales thread, AIEW still hanging on to #9 among 2009 releases and closing in on 1.3 million albums moved. Yes her worldwide sales have been really disappointing. Doesn't help that her label isn't releasing AG in UK again. They should put her on X factor and AG will be very well promoted there :X

That's very sweet of Bonnie. I knew she liked Kelly because of what she said after the Grammy's, but it is great to hear she is a fan as well.
Talking about Kelly after her "Because of You" Grammy performance...
"And Kelly Clarkson -- that song in particular just moved me so much. I think shes such a great singer. And she likes my music!" --Bonnie Raitt

Nothing new, but.... Kelly Clarkson Says Next Album Will Be 'Really Different' 'American Idol' alum is looking to release new LP next fall. By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson's post-"American Idol" career has been full of surprises, and judging from a recent interview with Chicago radio station Kiss FM 103.5, her next album may contain even more - like a departure from her signature rock/pop sound. "Yeah, we're already working on it," she told DJ Ty Bentli. "We tour throughout 2010 overseas and then we actually are probably going to have released the record in the fall of 2010," Clarkson said of next year's agenda. Aside from writing some of her own songs, the singer is currently penning tracks for other artists, noting that she sometimes keeps the tracks for herself if she really likes them. "What's really weird is right now I've got a really cool [music] publisher I work with that has hooked me up with a lot of different writers that do a lot of tracks and stuff," she said. "So we've been writing for other artists but then I end up liking it so much that I can't give them away, but they're really different. The next record is probably going to be really different." Clarkson did not specify which artists she's been writing for. And while the "American Idol" alum is heavily involved in the creative process, she did confess that her hectic schedule can sometimes interfere with how much she actually gets to write on a record. "If I end up liking stuff that I've done I'll include it, but if I like other stuff better then I'll just have more of that. Sometimes you're just more inspired, I guess, and especially if you have records that come out real close together, it might be more other people's songs because there's not enough time to write and sing and perform and do everything," she said. The North American leg of Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted Tour ends in New Orleans on December 13, and the singer begins her lengthy overseas jaunt - which is scheduled to cover Europe, Australia and New Zealand over 10 weeks - in England on February 7. www.mtv.com/news/articles/1625397/20091103/clarkson_kelly.jhtml

I voted for Kelly! :) Congrats!
Do you guys know what her next single will be after Already Gone peaks? thanx.
Can't wait to see her AMA performance as it has been WAY too long since Kelly was on an awards show performing.

It's shaping up to look like Clive has won again and DLMSY will be the next single. Now obviously you've read something somewhere...why does it "look like Clive has won again and DLMSY will be the next single"? It seems a bit silly just to say it and not cite your source.
