Without restarting the whole tired debate over Kelly's appearance, I'd just note that the flap over the Self Magazine cover is still all over the web today, including a lot of the big portals and news sites, and except for a few of the nastier gossip blogs, the coverage is almost entirely sympathetic to Kelly (for once, pretty much everyone recognizes that the blame lies with the magazine). This Salon piece is a pretty good example: www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/08/12/kelly_clarkson/index.htmlIt's kind of a shame for everyone involved because it seems like the Self people really like Kelly and are running a very positive article on her, they just went overboard on the cover.

From Idolchatter: Albums: Kelly Clarkson, All I Ever Wanted (6,000, -9 percent, 668,000/1,000 digital, -18 percent, 142,000 digital total) ***The site rounds so based on last weeks sales it should be 6,197 (667.646) total...also this week MD took a large leap in week 22 to 5.000 (christmas sales) and hit the 700K mark I would have expected a small gain since she did GMA on Friday.

At least the decline was less than last weeks increase. What drove the spike was perhaps the controversy of Halo/ AG. I think that with the official adds date of AG this week, it will increase gradually from now on. Come on kelly, u need to get back to 5 figure sales!

It's very important for a superstar to appear frequently in magazines. If magazines will receive this type of backlash for photoshopping Kelly, I wonder what kind of effect this will have / has had in Kelly appearing in magazines this era.

You can smooth out a picture without going to the extremes that Self did. Granted, the end product looked good, but it no longer looked like Kelly's current appearance. I think they could have found a more realistic happy medium.

Yeah, there are so many articles out today about the Self magazine. The ironic thing is that the Kelly article is about being "true to yourself" and then they completely change her body (and her face too)- so it's sending this reallymixed message- and they overdid it- they changed the shape of her face so much it doesn't even really look like her.

The thing that really bothered me about the Self cover was that they messed with her face. I think her face is much cuter than the photoshopped face on the cover.

I agree, it doesn't even look like her. I watched a video yesterday that showed other pictures from the shoot, and they looked so much better than the cover picture. They should have used one of those instead.

Television Event Get Schooled: You Have the Right Premieres September 8th Simultaneously Across All Viacom U.S. Networks Featuring Kelly Clarkson and LeBron JamesRoadblock Simulcast to Kick Off "Get Schooled" National Education Initiative LOS ANGELES and NEW YORK, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On Sept. 8 at 8 p.m., all of Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) (NYSE: VIA.B) U.S. television properties will join together to simultaneously air Get Schooled: You Have the Right, a 30-minute special that highlights education challenges and breakthroughs experienced by three leading figures from the world of entertainment, sports and politics; along with the stories of three of their most trusted professional colleagues. This is the first programming "roadblock" of any kind across all Viacom networks including BET, MTV, VH1, CMT, COMEDY CENTRAL, Spike TV and Nickelodeon.Get Schooled: You Have the Right features pop superstar Kelly Clarkson and NBA MVP LeBron James and documents the experiences of successful young adults who work behind-the-scenes to support these famous figures. The program will provide real-life examples of how a commitment to education and a drive to overcome obstacles can create a path to success. Get Schooled: You Have the Right formally kicks off "Get Schooled," a five-year national initiative co-developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom that creates a platform for corporate and community stakeholders to address the challenges facing America's public schools. "We believe that improving our educational performance is a national priority. The Get Schooled partnership is committed to elevating the national consciousness about this issue and helping to bring about positive change in our schools. Working together with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we've developed a television event that represents a truly unprecedented programming commitment by Viacom, and an important step in an effort that demands our attention," said Philippe Dauman, President and CEO of Viacom. "Today, in America, far too many young people enter adulthood unprepared for college, career and life," said Allan Golston, President of the U.S. Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "Changing this reality requires the full engagement of the corporate and nonprofit communities, working harder to support students, families and schools to create an expectation in every community that a college education is possible for all young people. Through the creativity of Viacom's team and the strong connections its networks cultivate with their audiences, we have a unique ability to reach young people and their families on this critical issue." "Lots of young people run into problems beyond their control, like finances, that keep them from pursuing their education. At that point, it's easy to give up. But I believe it's important to continue to work hard and learn from everyone and everything around you," Kelly Clarkson said. The program will chronicle the critical role of education in shaping three trusted colleagues who work with some of the most notable personalities in the world. It will show how education has helped prepare them to become the successful professionals they are today. Flashbacks will depict key educational moments that influenced their lives, and prepared them for their careers. "I know first hand how important it is for young people to have role models who can inspire them about the importance of education and help them make good choices that will provide them with tools to succeed," said LeBron James. The show will air simultaneously on the following Viacom networks: BET, BET J, CMT, CMT Pure Country, COMEDY CENTRAL, Logo, MTV, MTV Jams, MTV Hits, MTV Tr3s, MTV2, mtvU, Nick @ Nite, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network, Palladia, Spike TV, The N/Teen Nick, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul.

That is some gigantic promotion. I wonder if they could work in a performance somehow. Appearing on all those channels at once would be huge.

My guess is we'll see a few 5-second clips of Kelly singing and LeBron playing hoops, but that's it.
Ironic that they picked two people who became superstars at a young age after passing up college scholarships and basically don't use their educations in their careers, but that's the nature of celebrity spokespeople. In Kelly's case, I'm sure they will talk about having her singing talent discovered by her choir director - she does make a good poster girl for music education.
It's still very cool and will keep her face out there in a positive way. Normally you have to be the President of the United States, dead or on trial to command that many channels at once.

Agreed. Aside from this being a great cause, this is major promotion. I wonder if they'll do a tiny performance or something. Unlikely, but if they did, that would probably help AG blow up like no other.

It would also be out of character for Kelly to push a promotional angle to this. Recall how she refused to perform Never Again on the Idol charity special because she thought it would be crass to use a charity special to promote a single.

Other thing I noticed was that the press release says "three leading figures from the world of entertainment, sports and politics" but they haven't identified the political person yet. Something this high-profile, could easily be the President or the First Lady or some other very big draw. When Bush was president, they would definitely have sent the First Lady to do a special like this, the Obamas might do the same.
(Note: not trying to start a political tangent, just speculating on whether it will be someone who brings in more eyeballs)

I don't see a performance with that program, but that is very close to the Divas Show, isn't it? If so, there will be some MAJOR exposure within a very short span of time, which will definitely be good for her and the album.

These shows will help 'Already Gone''s sales as well as the album's sales. And remember that the 4th quarter of the year is the period when sales are at their peak.

Yeah, as long as the album is plugging along. The things that could bump up sales for more than a good week now and then are (1) Already Gone (or a later single) becoming a hit and (2) the album still being on the shelves when the holidays roll around.

I think if the label is smart, they will definitely find a way to keep the album alive through the holiday season, regardless of AG's success.

Well, looking at AG's performance so far worldwide, I can see it go all the way up.. Call me an overly enthusiastic and optimistic Kelly fan, but I really do believe that AG can do miracles to this era as a whole :)

Well, it seems the whole "Halo" controversy has gone away- maybe it was good to bring it up at the time, it got it out of people's system- no one seems to be talking about it now- it's not an issue anymore (though it's possible it might have never been) and the single seems to be doing better and better.
