^I agree. Her "Sober" performances on the AIEW tour beat all other performances she did on previous tours and televised performances of the song. She just sings it so well, not that she didn't before, but just even better..

I love Kelly to pieces, but I have to agree that her image is really killing her. We're in the age of female pop stars being over the top and theatrical, but Kelly's not like that. She doesn't stand out anymore, and she needs to find a way to stand out again and have people take another look at her. Her voice is still the best female voice in pop music, but she needs to revamp the rest of her act and bring it into the present. I don't think Kelly needs to try to stand out by being just like everybody else. Sometimes, the best artists win out in the long run by doing it their own way and letting the market come to them. Tastes are always changing, and sometimes they go in cycles. Kelly prefers to present herself more like a rock star than a pop star. I don't expect that to change. As far as image, I'd like to see her dress in the next round of promo like she did at the start of the fall tour: Her hair looked really nice there and that outfit was a nice color and flattered her figure well, and the whole outfit is just more feminine than how she tends to dress sometimes. I know the boots gave her shin splints when she wore them for whole shows, but that shouldn't be a problem for shorter promo appearances. I've been leaning towards the idea that maybe AIEW is her best bet for single #4 after all - it's got the combination of big vocals, big emotions, big chorus, and enough rock edge to maybe hook male and older fans who didn't go for some of the other singles.

I really want her to release AIEW and IICHY sometime before the era ends, but it looks like only one of them will be a single, or DLMSY. Also, Cry will never see the day either, I assume.

I didn't like that K-Hutch duet he seemed very awkward with his dancing, and I thought he sang more of the song than Kelly did. I would've rather she sang it herself, and threw in a few booty shakin dancing in there. LOVE LOVE LOVE Sober

I was at the San Jose tour last night, and she sounded phenomenal! Her voice has held up on this tour like never before. There just wasn't a moment she sounded strained or off--her voice is seriously unbelievably powerful and rich in person. I saw her in San Jose a few years ago for the Hazel Eyes tour (I think it was the last show of that tour, the "bonus one" she did for the Berkeley people), and she sounded awesome then, too, but I think last night was better.
The duet with Eric was...interesting haha. He just wasn't quite good enough to pull it off (though I liked his opening stuff), but Kelly sounded fantastic. Her part is so high for like the entire thing, and they were having a blast together. The band overpowered them a bit, but I think she said it was their first time performing it.
Her covers were just phenomenal, and fit in really well. Lies gave me chills. At first I was disappointed I wasn't going to hear Cry, until she sang Sober. My boyfriend (an extremely casual Kelly fan, though me playing her constantly tends to turn him off, but I bought his ticket so he came with me) was blown away by her voice, Sober in particular (he leaned over and said "She sounds really amazing"--I always think praise from an unbiased person is best haha).
As usual, she was so funny, too. She got big laughs for saying the trumpet makes her feel like Beyonce, and at one point she was talking in front of the fan so her hair was blowing back and she was like "I feel like I'm in a music video trying to talk to you guys right now." And then went on to again reference Beyonce, saying her hair was doing the cool stuff like in her Revlon (?) commercials, and she isn't asked to do those commercials because she can't make her hair do that haha. Also, after singing her blues stuff, she said something to the effect of "I really love this kind of music. I haven't recorded it much--well, ever, because of the suits, but I get to sing it on tour" and that got a big laugh, too.
Anyway, it was a really fantastic night. She totally rocked out and her voice was absolutely on point from start to finish.
PS~ I wish she'd rerecord IICHY to sound like it did last night--so much more energy than the album version (and I love the album version, but I think it will always feel...lesser to me now).
PPS~ Classic Kelly concert experience: lyric flubbing. During the crowd participation part, she explained it wrong. When she was telling one side what to do, she started singing the "ah-ah-ahs" first, and then got totally lost and had Cory do it because she couldn't remember what they were supposed to do for a second haha.

So I loved the duet but the reason I'm posting is different. I keep seeing all these posts about how she really needs to update her music to sell more or look better but the truth of the matter is that she isn't Katy Perry skinny or wearing skanky outfits all the time because that isn't Kelly. She is a singer/songwriter. She doesn't have to dress skanky to sell records obviously bc AIEW is one of the top ten best selling albums worldwide this year. And honestly she really isn't big at all. When I met her last November I was expecting her to be huge from all these forums and when she came in to the room my meet and greet was in I was shocked to find out that she was not that at all. She was extremely small and tiny and the fact that she was so short and with a ghetto booty like hers I think makes her out to look bigger than she actually is in person. Sorry for the big long rant kinda but I had to get this all off my chest.

I've been wanting AIEW as a single ever since the beginning, and you said it perfectly, Wallace. Also, I think it's got that super hook and full sound that Pink's "Funhouse" lacked, and that nearly went top 20. IICHY I can see flopping.

IMO, AIEW should have been single #2. I've always pushed for its release. I'm on board with it being the 4th!

Complete video of Sober from last night in San Jose - Kelly sounds amazing, and if I may say so, she looks very nice too.

Great vid. I'm LOVING her singing Sober on tour. She does look great too. I bet this is going to be a concert staple of hers as well. :)

Christmas Airplay for this week: Kelly Clarkson, My Grown Up Christmas List (878 spins)
I just tried to find this song on iTunes and couldn't find it. The label should release it as an iTunes single this season!!

I was flipping thru the World Tour thread at the Express and saw a few things that were news to me: Parachute is the opening act for the UK leg of the tour, and a South African Idol winner named Jason Dean Hartman Tweeted that he's the opener for the South African leg. Also, three of the seven UK tour dates are sold out so far, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham.

I posted this in the poll thread of biggest eras this decade:
Here is a partial list of the total number of spins by artists (solos and compilations) on all formats of radio compiled from Mediabase from March 1, 1998. So, the "first single" on this list means since 3/98.
As you can see, several artists on this list have the disadvantage of not debuting for many years well after this mark and some artists, like R&B/Pop and Pop/Country artists have more crossover format potential. Similarly, artists like George Strait, Nickelback, Mariah Carey, Madonna, etc. have a huge advantage of recurrent play of their hits that were released prior to 3/98):
1. George Strait: 5,176,624 (first single 3/98) 2. Nickelback: 4,875,363 (first single 11/99) 3. Alan Jackson: 4,631,629 (first single 3/98) 4. Usher: 4,343,470 (first single 3/98) 5. Beyonce: 3,766,246 (first single DIL 2: 4/01, first album single: 5/03) 6. Kelly Clarkson: 3,676,476 (first AI single 9/02, first album single 4/03) 7. Shania Twain: 3,626,432 (first single 3/98) 8. Mariah Carey: 3,576,990 (first single 3/98) 9. Rascal Flatts: 3,436,779 (first single 1/00) 10.Nelly: 3,291,972 (first single 3/00) 11.Pink: 3,257,300 (first single 1/00) 12.Rihanna: 2,923,750 (first single 4/05) 13.Alicia Keys: 2,910,043 (first single 3/01) 14Justin Timberlake: 2,729,123 (first single 8/02) 15.50 Cent: 2,704,402 (first single 6/99) 16.Madonna: 2,623,629 (first 3/98) 17.Chris Brown: 2,486,642 (first single 5/04) 18.Ludacris: 2,387,794 (first single 6/00) 19.Kanye West: 2,350,791 (first single 4/03) 20.Avril Lavigne: 2,232,177 (first single 2/02) 21.Christina Aguilera: 2,203,780 (first single 6/98) 22.Jennifer Lopez: 2,191,536 (first single 4/99) 23.Black Eyed Peas: 2,147,352 (first single 4/03) 24.Leann Rimes: 2,028,375 (first single 3/98) 25.Eminem: 1,973,745 (first single 11/98) 26.Ciara: 1,971,268 (first single 5/04) 27.Outkast: 1,894,555 (fist single 3/98) 28.Britney Spears: 1,809,645 (first single 8/98) 29.Akon: 1,806,900 (first single 7/06) 30.Taylor Swift: 1,752,766 (first single 5/06) 31.Sean Paul: 1,707,246 (first single 3/00) 32.Nelly Furtado: 1,671,808 (first singe 7/00) 33.Carrie Underwood: 1,620,346 (first AI single 5/05, first album single 10/05) 34.Reba McEntire: 1,589,844 35.Gwen Stefani: 1,548,771 (first single 9/04) 36.Fergie: 1,591,779 (first single 7/06) 37.Lil Wayne: 1,369,340 (first single 9/99) 38.Pussycat Dolls: 1,297,379 (first single 3/05) 39.Ashanti: 1,251,425 (first single 7/00) 40.Lady Gaga: 1,088,222 (first single 4/08)
Again, this airplay is compiled for songs on Mediabase from 3/98-present for singles released at any time. The artists that I have highlighted are the most impressive considering how long they have been out:
1. Rihanna 2. Beyonce/Kelly Clarkson 3. Lady Gaga

She really did look great. I was actually even surprised how small she looked. Much more so than those pictures show. In person, she's just...tiny. Not super thin, but she's just this short person with this huge voice and it's sort of uncanny to watch.

She gains as little as five pounds and it shows like crazy. I just can't get over how big she looks in pictures, and how skinny she actually is in person. That's what bothers me the most - she's not even big!

^^ Gaga is probably much less than #40. It is just a partial list, taken mostly of those artists who have the most number of Top 10s in the Hot 100.
Rihanna, Beyonce, and Kelly's stats are quite mind-boggling !

Album price reduced to $8.99 on amazon.com. AIEW in top 100. This should help album sales some.

Idol performs pitch perfectReview: Concert American Idol knew what they were doing when they chose Kelly Clarkson - the girl can sing. The powerhouse vocalist performed at the Event Center for her "All I Ever Wanted" tour on Sunday night to a full crowd. The aesthetics of the show were toned down, probably confident that the main attraction would provide a good show. A simple stage setup put the focus on Clarkson's voice, which the singer took full advantage. Clarkson's outfit was refreshing, donning only a red, bedazzled T-shirt with simple black slacks. She obviously didn't need to rely on being scantily clad and dolled-up beyond recognition to capture the audience's attention. Charismatic and relaxed, Clarkson made easy, short conversations with fans, declaring them the loudest fans she has heard so far during the tour, eliciting even louder screams from the audience. The audience was, surprisingly, an older crowd, but the screams were obviously from excited teenage girls. After performing a bluesy cover of Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight," Clarkson joked, "I feel like I look like Beyonce with that song." Listening to her sing that song, I felt I was sitting around a campfire in my cowboy boots with 6,000 of my closest friends. Clarkson was backed up by her nine-member band, which included a saxophonist and a trumpeter. The addition of the horns added a jazzy touch to her pop songs and a soulful pull for her rock songs. Clarkson chose a variety of interesting artists to cover, such as The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and The White Stripes. My favorite was her short but powerful cover of "Lies" by The Black Keys. Accompanied only by the sounds of an electric guitar and the piano, the song was haunting and bluesy and made Clarkson's voice sound like luscious melting chocolate. An interesting cover combined King of Leon's hit "Use Somebody" with Alanis Morissette's, "That I Would Be Good." Lyrics such as "I would be good even if I gained 10 pounds," had the audience cheering for the slightly plumper singer. Fan favorites, such as "Since U Been Gone," and "Walk Away," had the ladies and a good amount of males singing (and screaming) along. During the choruses, it was as if the crowd knew to immediately start hopping up and down in a synchronized format. Opening for Clarkson was pop-rock band Parachute and folk-pop singer Eric Hutchinson, who I recognized only because of his music video on VH1. Both artists performed in front of a giant curtain that hid Clarkson's stage behind it. Despite the meager stage set-up, the playful Eric Hutchinson still delivered an enthusiastic performance, with the assistance of his four-member band and his snazzy white blazer. During the song "Oh," Hutchinson asked the audience to cheer for the song as if it was their favorite song. His most well-known song, "Rock & Roll," showcased his soprano range. I heard him hit notes only dogs should be able to hear. Sadly, the crowd cheered most when Hutchinson introduced Clarkson as the next performer. One of the highlights of the show was when Clarkson and Hutchinson came together to perform the Michael Jackson classic, "Rock With You." As I looked around the arena, it seemed everyone was dancing, and sections of the crowd were swaying from side to side together. I admit, I did a little shuffle myself. Who can resist two adorable singers awkwardly dancing around each other to such a great song? When it was back to Clarkson performing solo, the singer slowed down the mood with an acoustic version of "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and gave the audience a chance to sing along by holding out her microphone. I found myself trying to write this review and sing at the same time. After faking a farewell to the audience, the lights blackened for a few moments. Suddenly, the arena lit up with flashing red and blue lights and Clarkson's DJ began scratching, giving off a dance club vibe. Clarkson came onstage to perform a cover of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army," giving the pop singer an edgier sound. Clarkson ended the concert with the upbeat, rock-heavy "My Life Would Suck Without You," which sent the audience into its final tizzy for the night. Thanks, Kelly Clarkson. My night would've sucked without your concert. media.www.thespartandaily.com/media/storage/paper852/news/2009/12/01/ArtsEntertainment/Idol-Performs.Pitch.Perfect-3842151.shtml

Is "Sober" officially in the set list now? I really want to hear it this weekend when I see her. I didn't get excited when I heard she was doing it because I thought it was just temporary when she had all those radio promo spots to do between shows.
