I'm sure you could probably tell that the soundtrack to Purple Rain did very well in my chart..lol. Out of curiosity, did "Take Me With U" ever impact? Love that one. "Take Me With You" only made it to #15 for me...it never really hit me big at the beginning and when it was finally released as a single, it didn't help. Sometimes I'll hear a song on a CD (or album back in the day), and not think anything of it. But then I'll hear it on the radio and think 'wow, how did I miss this one'..lol. Sometimes songs just sound better on the radio to me.

It was a hit here in Canada months before....but it was the video that really won me over. It hit #3 The summer of 1984 was really awesome in my book...so many groups and artists clicking for me. At this time with Cyndi already scored her 2nd # 1 here for me, I thought she would be the more successful over Madonna. "Holiday" hit #2 and "Borderline" #3 Nice chart....liking the Peabo Bryson love. Hit #8 for me earlier in the year. I don't see "There Goes My Baby" on there. Sure not one of Donna's better efforts, in my opinion, but couldn't you show it a little love? lol

Your '84 chart had some additional unique entries to our charts. Toronto's final single "New Romance" was riding high. I charted the version by Spider back in 1980. And M+M (Martha & The Muffins) at #14! Their earlier '84 hit "Black Stations/White Stations" was especially good. The Honeymoon Suite tune is a lost classic. And there's one of my favorite classic rock songs debuting, "Go For Soda" by Kim Mitchell! How I wish I heard this song back when it was originally released as it would have done very well on my chart. Looks like all of us had lots of love for "She Bop" as it was in the Top 10 in ALL of our charts on this week in 1984. I think that may be the first time all us had the same song in the Top 10 in the same week. And very deserving because it stills sounds great today.

It tied with the title cut as being the biggest hit from the "Purple Rain" soundtrack on my chart. But not the biggest hit from the film. There was one song from the film that wasn't performed by Prince that was a #1 smash on my chart.

Toronto's final single "New Romance" was riding high. I charted the version by Spider back in 1980. How interesting! I have learned something new. I charted the version by Spider as well (#7 in June 1980). I never knew there was another successful version.

I charted the version by Spider as well (#7 in June 1980). I never knew there was another successful version. Definitely a classic song. And speaking of 1980, Classic AT40 is airing the show from 9/13/1980 this weekend. So it looks like we are going back in time! So it's time for us to dig through another pile of charts that have turned even more yellow than the ones we have referenced the past two weekends! :) Since Classic AT40 does not go beyond 1988 and there may be some old chart makers that don't go back to September of 1980, I thought we could also go 10 years after the program scheduled for this weekend. So those who were charting on 9/15/1990, let's see that chart as well! I was charting during both years, so I have my work cut out for me. I'll try to post one of the two charts before this weekend.

Here's the first of the two charts for this week. I started with the 1990 chart. It would be a major fight for the #1 spot in the weeks to come with "Dirty Cash", "Praying For Time" & "Suicide Blonde" all songs I was absolutely crazy about moving into the Top 5 about the same time. Ultimately, all three would end up reaching the top.

Very cool to see Sara Hickman high up there. she was at #42 for this week but would eventually hit #4
I was in a real AC state of mind here. As you can see I got caught up in the New Kids phenomenal. Mariah Carey explodes up my chart. I loved everything Mariah did in ther early part of her career. When she turned skarnk....her songs are mediocre hit or miss.

Without seeing Cesar's chart yet, I think this is the first week our charts have been so different. Phil Collins did extremely well for me in 1990, SHOTWTH followed "I Wish It Would Rain Down" (#1) and "Do You Remember" (#2). Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson were also charting with two songs that would reach number one.
If I remember correctly I was charting "Knocked Out" by Paula Abdul because of a new mix that was released as a single in the UK, but was only available in the US on "Shut Up And Dance".
Alannah Myles and Michel'le each had several hits from their breakthrough albums, but never did much afterwards. I don't even recall Tiffany or Laura Branigan's songs by name.
I noticed Jude Cole at #18 on both of your charts. I thought he had done as well on mine, but I was wrong! TFLG had peaked at #38 two weeks earlier. "Baby, It's Tonight" did much better, reaching #8 in June.

Without seeing Cesar's chart yet, I think this is the first week our charts have been so different. I'll reply to everyone's chart this evening. I am holding out hope that our resident disco enthusiast will show some love for the Adventures Of Stevie V on his chart. I know that one had me acting like a madman on the dance floor!

Kind of off topic, but as long as we're talking about songs that mean something to us - soundmagazine, any particular reason why you chose a Peter, Paul, and Mary b-side to be the side spinning in your avatar?

You are good! My spinning 45s either pay tribute or reflect recent subjects that have been on my mind in various message boards. In this case, it was a tribute to the passing of Mary Travers. I heard the news late one evening and selected the first 45 I found in my inventory by the group as I had little time before retiring for the evening, not paying particular attention to which side of the 45 I was using.

Ugh...I couldn't find my charts last night for that period of time and I'm going away tomorrow night so unless I find them tonight, it'll probably be next week before I can post the 1990 chart. I know it's somewhere in the mess that is my spare room. But I'm pretty sure "Dirty Cash" didn't do that well I did find my 1980 chart so when those start going up...I'll be there

Great to know that someone else appreciated that Sara Hickman song! Although it became the first promo video I could not watch (I hate spiders!). This was actually Sara's second visit to my Top 3. Her single earlier in 1990, "Simply", went to #1. Yes, the New Kids appreciation was alive and well on your chart with not only the latest two singles by the group riding high, but also the duets by Wahlberg & Knight. Both of us had "Tonight" at #2 the prior week. Mine dropped while you took it to #1. It is my highest charting NKOTB song and has a cool retro feel. The Propaganda song is good and I was surprised to find that it didn't make my Top 40. Probably not enough exposure at the time. #12 thru #15 showed your appreciation to female singers . I never heard the Lorraine Segato selection. Only know her from the Parachute Club and the Northern Lights charity song "Tears Are Not Enough" Mariah Carey was a lot like Whitney Houston for me and didn't have nearly the same success on my chart. But I completely agree that her earlier work far surpasses what she has offered this century. My favorite obscurity (at least from an American chart perspective) is the Skydiggers song. Really wish that would have had more exposure in the states because it is excellent.

"Baby, It's Tonight" did much better, reaching #8 in June. I suppose it shouldn't surprise us that our charts began to stray so much since there were so many more outlets to locate and listen to many more songs. Half of my chart are songs that never reached AT40. And ironically, one of the songs that did (my #1) is missing on everyone elses chart. We did share the #2 song, so that was great to see. The Phil Collins "But Seriously" singles did well on my chart considering I was shunning commercial radio so much around this time. "Another Day In Paradise" was a #1, "I Wish It Would Rain Down" was a #5. and "Do You Remember" at #8. SHOTWTH made it also, but only peaked in the 30's. Funny video. The Paula Abdul was an interesting addition. Kinda like me charting the remix for "Black Betty", although mine was 13 years after the original! How well did Alannah Myles song, "Song Instead Of A Kiss", perform on your chart? I stopped charting by that time but it would have been a guaranteed #1 on my chart if I had been. Absolutely haunting. And once again showing just how far I had strayed from commercial radio. I also charted "Baby It's Tonight", but it was the two follow-up singles ("Time For Letting Go" and "House Full Of Reasons") that ended up reaching my Top 10. That was quite an impressive debut for MC Hammer on your chart! As you saw on my chart, "Pray" was moving up pretty fast also, although it ended up only reaching #13. But considering I did not like rap music, it was noteworthy. Did it reach #1 on your chart? The common obscurity we shared on this chart is Billy Idol's "LA Woman". He did a fine remake. An even bigger obscurity we shared is the Sinead O'Connor song "Three Babies", but it was a few weeks away from debuting on my chart and it would end up going to #1.

By 1992, I was becoming more and more discouraged with most pop music. My chart was becoming increasingly country influenced. Five of the number one songs of the year during the 1990's were crossovers from country radio.

Those were the days! YES!!! Someone else charted the Indecent Obsession song in their top 10! And considering it was already at #9 after only 3 weeks on your chart, you may have even eventually eclipsed my peak of #4 for the song. Nice chart! Thanks for sharing.

I bet you were surprised when you discovered it landed at #13 at year end, assuming you were doing some sort of point system. I think many of us old-time radio listeners were really struggling in the 90's when it seemed like radio had a major overhaul. While you ventured into country, I nearly stopped listening completely. But then the early days of M2 in the mid-90's revived me a little bit with some good alternative music options. Looks like we are ready to go with the September 13, 1980 charts. I will get mine posted later this evening.

<sigh> My teenage years. I enjoyed music in the early 80's much more as those years were closest to my favorite decade (the 70's). It was evident by 12 songs that had a gold status on this chart alone. And the following week "Let's Get Serious" would be the first of a handful of songs in the 80's that would receive a platinum status. My love for powerful soul songs definitely carried over from the 70's.

I'm late to the game, but finally a week I can play (my chart started in 1988)! Better late than never! Especially since I see "Dirty Cash" listed, albeit as a song that fell off your chart this week. But I'll take it! Also nice to see the Indecent Obsession song in your Top 10. That's now three charts with the song in the Top 10. But I bet if we consolidated all of 1990 charts, the number one song would probably be "Praying For Time" as it was in the Top 10 in 4 of our 5 charts, with Vic being the one holdout.

Woohoo! Not only with "Upside Down" sharing the #1 spot on our charts but also the "Let's Get Serious" connection a few months earlier. Along with the ones you mentioned doing better on our charts than the national chart, I also see the Hall & Oates song joining that list. But I have a feeling you did not have that as the highest charting single from the "Voices" LP like I did. Nice to see the 70's song "Walk Away" as your highest debut. It would reach my Top 10 in the upcoming months.

That's now three charts with the song in the Top 10. "Dirty Cash" peaked at #12 on my chart. "Tell Me Something" peaked at #2. I actually own the Indecent Obsession CD - I think I found it in a bargain bin for $2.

Here was my story on the singles from that LP: #7 How Does It Feel To Be Back #18 You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling #11 Kiss On My List #10 You Make My Dreams Interesting that if not for our different peak for HDIFTOB, we would share in how each single from the LP did better than the prior one. How often do you see that occur from an LP. Really an oddity.
